Not in my kitchen. I might still have a can or two of Cherry Coke imported from the States somewhere, but most of my sweet foods contain, well, sugar.

But you kind of backed up my point - that people are growing good food (corn) and using it for non-good-food purposes (artificial sweeteners, biofuels, etc).

Indeed, but I see two problems:

Unless we go for discrete laser diodes in every pixel, we're likely to end up with a scanning solution like CRTs, probably with mirrors (since you can't bend light with magnets), requiring a bit of spatial depth to the unit. Also, how does one get around the speckle pattern generated by coherent light? The planar surface may need to include some heavy diffuse material, perhaps?

These may have already been solved, in which case hooray for laser TV!

The human eye is much more sensitive to green light than any other (retinal response peaks at about 550nm I believe so these 532/531s are close). Therefore you need much less power to produce a very visible beam.

I don't know how any mouse would benefit programming, but for serious computing IMO one needs a 3 button mouse. Not these half-button-half-wheel monstrosities that seem to have permeated the market nowadays. For a good old model I can't go past the A4tech 4-button mice like this one.

    Pros:
Three actual buttons on top, requiring the same amount of pressure per button is a must-have feature AFAIAC
Natural locations for each finger, without requiring heavy sideways movement.
Two scroll wheels (okay I only use one, but just emphasising the fact that it is *separate* from the buttons)
    Thumb button is nice
Wired. Though not so popular now I consider this a pro since I don't like replacing batteries.

    Cons:
Opto-mechanical, ie not optical. This is a show-stopper for many.
Obsolete. They're PS/2 only and hard to find these days.

Any modern mouse that had three proper buttons on top would probably do just as well. Does anyone know of any?

I'm not sure on what grounds you claim that file corruption is the most common cause of storage failure. Typically I see SMART reporting bad sectors, or if I miss them, mdadm drops a disk from an array due to write errors. Once a disk has been dropped more than once I replace it. In those cases replacing the disk before a catastrophic failure is the prudent thing to do. I very rarely have to delve into backups except, of course, to retrieve accidentally deleted files and for testing purposes.

A healthy way to look at your hard disks is as one of two states; failed, or not quite failed yet. Mechanical hard disk failure is a normal and expected event. Relying on backups to dig you out isn't.
