they can't differentiate between high-quality records and a digital-to-analog dump (worthless).
So... you're saying you can tell the difference between a digital-to-analog dump and an analog-to-analog one? Quick better write a paper on it and submit yourself for double-blind tests, because no one else has ever managed it.
Sharp's reflective LCD screens work beautifully on their Zaurus models too. I can read the screen of my lovely SL-5600 in the sun with no problems (so long as I tilt it at the right angle:) .
You can surely see why though: the term Firewire is a trademark owned by Apple Computer Inc. Therefore any appliance or PC with firewire has to get Apple's blessing (and presumably pay them a lot of money) before they can use that name. Instead they opt to call it "1394" (after the approved standard IEEE-1394) or "i-Link", leading to massive confusion in the market.
USB allows for half an Amp, not half a Watt. That's 500mA, as per the USB specification.
At the required 5 Volts, P=IxV gives you a maximum of 2.5 Watts of power.
Your point still stands though. Larger hard drives will always need an external power supply. Enclosures for 2.5" laptop drives often use two USB cables allowing for 1 Amp of current. The two 2.5" HDDs on my desk are rated at 0.7A and 1.0A respectively, so the latter would be pushing it without external power.
Well 1701 did used to be a popular error message on PCs with old MFM hard drives. Usually when the second, thinner, cable was accidentally left disconnected.
What do you mean banning gay marriage? When was it ever legal in the united states?
Last time I checked capital punishment, paganism, abortion and compound interest were still legal so this Christian influence, if it exists, isn't doing a very good job.
On the other hand I'm pretty sure that postnatal infanticide, necrophilia, cannabilism, incest and bestiality are still illegal in the US so perhaps there is still a bit of Christian influence, though hardly recent. Better remove these evil Christians from power immediately!
Not terribly. They're great for low-power (in both senses of the term) VLSI devices, but try running an IT industry off their tech. Forget the current desktops, laptops and servers - we'd be back in 1998. Which is still impressive I'll admit but they're not really a serious threat beyond handheld tech.
Uh, who exactly is rejecting any science other than evolution?
If anything science is becoming a new religion in the States, for better or worse. Most people, even Texans, will believe nearly anything you say if you prefix it with "scientists have found".
Please don't try to bring back the meme that associates faith in the supernatural with a broad rejection of science.
Do you seriously believe that teaching kids evolution after Sputnik in any way aided US technical dominance?
Actually I suspect they might have extended that deal somewhat. The stores I've been in all had PS3s in stock, but had sold about 75% of their original stock at a rough guess.
1. They set the record because all the competition sold out.
So... it's a bad thing that they had produced enough consoles to cover demand for the launch? Or is it a good thing that the competitors didn't? I don't follow.
(damn, what was that comic strip with the peas selling consoles, and one of them only has one in stock and claims to have the most popular console ever after the first sale?)
2. They are in the market late; they have a long way to go to reach the Wii or XBox numbers.
They do have a way to go, yes. However this article is really only about launch figures, which are pretty much meaningless as far as I can tell. The original PlayStation IIRC has the worst console launch numbers on record.

Yeah, that sure showed 'em.

Speaking of which does anyone know of a linux command that will copy AND verify your files?
cp -v obviously doesn't do it, but something like that really should.

For DTS, there's Dolby Digital.
For PS3, there's the Wii.

Hey you remember the same game I do.
Absolutely marvellous putt!
So, are you saying that it didn't rock your world?
How long until they trademark "Crappernet".
Or does AOL already own that one?
Well 1701 did used to be a popular error message on PCs with old MFM hard drives. Usually when the second, thinner, cable was accidentally left disconnected.
Ahh, where ever did I put that old XT?
I still prefer SCSI LTO tape for archival data. Back up often to HD, then dump to tape every once in a while and bury the tapes in a safe place.
That's exactly what I thought. I really want one!
A collection of Beatles stamps was recently released. Are the Beatles dead, too?
Oh. Never mind.
You forgot Meme 1337: Feeling the need to make some reference to the predictabile repetitiveness of /. comments. ... and I just fell for it.

I'll stop making annoying retarded jokes when they stop putting out consoles with annoying, retarded names.
Wii? 360? Too many jokes.
So when will it become illegal to give antibiotics to livestock as a substitution for poor nourishment?
What Nordic countries have technology that can compete with AMD and Intel processors, or nVidia and ATi GPUs?

Though so did the PS3 and XBox2.
and yet here you are.
Perhaps no one wants to watch Casino Royal? :)
