Here's the 10 cent explanation of what a wrapper is.
Wrapper:A small program that intercepts API calls from a program (like the Glide API calls for Quake2) and executes an equivallent function in another API (like D3D or OpenGL).
Kinda acts like a translator in a discussion where neither of the involved parties speaks the other's language.
Uh. One thing though. You misunderstand. He won't be allowed to own, use, or even TOUCH a computer (for how long I have NO idea). If he cannot make a living at it, he won't be able to write free software either.
WebTV was supposed to make computers irrelevant for web browsing. Guess what. Can't easily upgrade, and you're locked in on your choices.
The thin client was supposed to replace the computer (sorry Larry). Again. Can't upgrade easily and if it's down, you cannot access anything to do work locally.
Now "information appliances" are going to replace the computer. Guess what. SAME SHIT DIFFERENT DAY!
I apologize for the use of profanity. But the saying applies better than just about anything else in this case.
I don't know about the rest of you. But THIS little gem appeared in my mailbox a couple days ago. NSI is getting REALLY desperate.

Yes Slashdot is running on Linux. But CT is always playing around with it. Also, as the kernels improve, so too should performance.
Slashdot tested in on it's new box fairly solidly, and the errors received were more due to bugs in the code for the pages than from any load-up on the kernel.
I propose that we attempt to Slashdot Slashdot.org with all our might for a solid week. Just to test the stability of the box under heavy-duty loads.
The only reasons the IBM people are saying "nobody runs it on million-hits-per-day servers" is because:
Someone IS, and since there's no problems, they aren't griping about it.
Nobody has actually attempted to test Linux under such a sustained load for long periods.
{Pokes CT in the shoulder}, HEY ROB! YOU LISTENING?
After penalizing the hobbyist overclocker for so long (with hardware-based locks), Intel has apparently finally purchased themselves a clue.
Now they can crack down on these scum who sell low-end systems overclocked and remarked as high-end. And the hobbyist can still clock his system into the stratosphere if he likes.
Who says gigantic, Big Brother-like corporations are COMPLETELY clueless?
There is no office suite "as good as" Office. Because Office SUCKS. It's all bells and whistles. Anyone who is looking for straight PRODUCTIVITY...should I say it....yeah....HATES OFFICE!
There is one office suite that's far, far better than Office. Basically it's one that Office has spent YEARS and dollars uncounted trying, unsuccessfully I might add, to emulate.
Two words for you.
Word Perfect
FLAWLESSLY imports and exports documents from Office. It even gets stuff right (like importing spreadsheets into a word processing doc) that breaks, badly, in Office.
It's own internal file formatting has not changed since WP6! How's THAT for backward compatibilty!
Best of all....there's a Linux port.
Integration is not always desireable. Office is highly integrated into the WinDOS platform. One of the REALLY major side-effects of that though is that if Office crashes, it usually drags WinDOS down without much of a fight.
Under Linux, you may lose the app, but unless you're some doofus running as Root for everything you do, you seldom, if ever lock the box up.
I'll agree. Currently IE is the more stable browser on a WinDOS platform. NS seems to get less and less stable around the time upgrades are made available. How much is Netscape's fault, and how much of it is malicious little "tweaks" left in by MS programming (or is what they do pogromming?), I cannot tell you.
Also, face it. The entire computer market is NOT the desktop market, nor is it all on the Internet.
Linux currently occupies a server niche, but is rapidly moving in and becoming a credible desktop environment.
In addition, when being used as a server, there's little sense in keeping a desktop open to run a graphical browser. And if you just need to make sure a page exists or looks good, do it the RIGHT way, from a desktop machine. Why bog down your server? (Oh, and before you start screaming about Linux not handling loads, I can and have had over 9 gigs of transfer on a server a month (light I know), with Web, IRC, FTP, Telnet, and a few other things running, and STILL am able to open up a desktop and play around.) It's not about that. It's about using the right tool for the right job. If you want to drive a nail, do you use a pipe wrench?
Also, Microsoft is definitely NOT "trying to make great products". They're trying to leverage mediocre, buggy, unstable software by knitting it as close as possible to the OS kernel so that what would otherwise be useless, not to mention painfully slow, appears more as a "feature" and is far quicker than it would be if it were truly a standalone program. This is why most non-MS software packages run slower than the stuff MS puts out. MS has access to all those nice little undocumented API calls to give it higher/better access priority with the kernel.
Also, there's a reason that Linux is, as that bootlicker Muth called it, SHELFWARE.
Not because people try it, don't like it, and chuck it up on a shelf never to use it again.
It's because they try it, find out that it works like it's supposed to, and never have to reinstall the beastie ever again. Upgrade? Sure. Reinstall completely, once in a red-white-and-blue moon.
Please troll elsewhere. We've had enough laughs on this issue. If we laugh much more, we're going to asphyxiate.
Come on, give me a break NT whomps on Linux so bad it's not even funny I remember running Linux way back in 96 and it was crap I have a hard time believing it's improved much since then besides, that test was run with the Linux boxes not running X, so of course that helped speed up performance DUH!
This is actually funny. In a sick, sad sorta way. You "remember Linux "way back" in 96" eh? Hmm, you don't think that with 3 years and...oh a couple hundred thousand hours of coding and debuggin it's gotten BETTER?
Unlike NT (Never Trustworthy), Linux has been CONSTANTLY under revision. There isn't a day that goes by that new code is added to the Linux legacy.
Unlike you, many of us don't REQUIRE a fulltime dummified P&C interface. And if turning it off helps improve performance of the machine while I'm not working on it, or even if I am, I'm ALL FOR IT. Pointing it out as a "cheat" is idiotic. It's a feature of the OS. The GUI is merely an app run on the system, not the system itself. Inevitably this IS going to mean more speed for the CLI. You're just peeved because you cannot turn off your butt-ugly NT interface.
Face the facts, Unix is a dead and dying OS it'll never be anything worth looking at besides, the world uses NT so until Linux gets some good apps that will be compatable with NT's...forget it
Unixen have been getting proclaimed "dead and dying" for YEARS. MS declared it so at one time. Now they're hustling to get NT certified as Unix. I'll believe Unix/Linux dead when I see it. Not because some kid who has trouble understanding what to do at a DOS prompt says so.
The world uses NT? Even "I" am not THAT widely travelled that I can make that claim! Do a check of how many of the webservers on the internet are using some form of Apache or CERN or NCSA or other unixen-based webservers. The number FAR exceeds the pitiful market share that NT holds.
I seem to also recall that NT handles threads better and also multitasks better than Linux plus NT security is way beyond Linux's how many NT exploits are there? no where near as many as Linux
You SEEM to recall? Or you DO recall? Just because some mental defective's mind barfs out pseudofacts doesn't mean it's so. Do some RESEARCH and find out. Also, threading, while a nice addition, isn't necessary to achieve peak performance in Linux. You saw it for yourself in an article posted on a site owned by MS itself. Linux as a server runs at LEAST 200% better than an equivallent (what a misnomer) NT machine. Also, Linux can wring every last ounce of performance out of a machine that would otherwise choke on NT.
Nowhere near as many NT exploits? MAYBE. Last time I checked the Symantec Antivirus Research Site there were several tens of THOUSANDS of bugs, exploits, and virii available to foul an already foul operating system.
In addition how many of the exploits in NT are fixed within 24-48 HOURS of notice. DAMN FEW (read ALMOST NONE). How many are fixed within a week? A month? A year?
How many of them are just hushed up in hopes that nobody finds them? Try MOST.
Now let's see. How is NT superior to Unixen?
It costs more. (NT=$x100 plus licenses, Linux=free).
It has to pay a mulitgazillion dollar marketing department. Linux is advertised mainly by word of mouth.
NT takes up 2x as much space on your HD.
NT has a higher number of days of downtime on average.
NT "security" is very good. So good in fact that it doesn't even let the system administrator configure the system properly.
NT sucks more system resources to maintain a barely functional state.
You know? You're right. NT MUST be superior.
.....Yeah, and Bill Gates might fly if we chucked him off the highest building we could find near Redmond.
geez, next you'll be arguing MacOS is gonna steal back it's share of the market
Other than the disgusting precedent this sets, I cannot say that I care all that much about it.
Who, outside of complete neophytes buy Compaq's anyhow?
Proprietary case
Proprietary Hardware
Proprietary loader that hides all the system info (like card type, memory count, and peripheral assay) from view.
IDIOTIC use of completely separate forms of power management (BIOS, Windows, and their own proprietary power manager), all of which screw network connections.
Unfortunately these dummified systems are becoming status quo for prebuilts from the "Big Guys".
AOL! AOL has had credit card transactions for just about FOREVER. They have had pay areas where you could download sound bytes, atc, and have to pay for your time/transfer after the fact, usually billed *TADA* TO YOUR CREDIT CARD!
AOL has been around how long now?
As has been mentioned to death, BBS's have done similar things for years (mostly porn BBS's).
Minitel
I could go on and on. But patenting "making money for downloading of a certain type of information" is already based on other patents. Many of them opened up to public consumption already.
SightSound are just a bunch of lowly squatters, who happened to patent something completely unenforceable, and are trying to get over on the glut of newer businesses who are following an older business model.
These people are little more than a waste of time, oxygen, and a lousy 30 seconds that their mothers spent squirming around in the back of their daddy's manure trucks with assorted male relatives, the family dog, and the family pig.
SightSound. Poster childern for Retroactive Birth Control in the coming millenium!
In essence, I agree. People need to respect the property of another.
Unfortunately, this isn't a realistic expectation. There's ALWAYS going to be people going where they're not "supposed to go."
About the most responsible thing that can and should be done if such an instance is discovered is to log in, initiate a shutdown of the server and fire off an e-mail to the domain holders/server admin address.
Yes, this IS a form of vandalism. But what would you rather have?
A server that was turned off as a form of protection?
Or dozens of people, possibly malicious, running around with root access in your system? Corrupted, stolen data. Backdoors all over the place? Someone in control of your system besides yourself?
Oh well. Hopefully these guys get their software-side shit together. Their hardware-side stuff is pretty killer.
Think about it. It's basically going to be a serial number inside the chip that you can use to check against Intel's product database. They're chucking a random number generator in there for encryption schemes because:
Net Commerce
They cannot stand to waste space on something that's useful for nothing more than ID's.
But, as I said, since it's not invading your privacy any, and if overclocking survives as a viable alternative to those who use it, WHO CARES?
6 kids from all over Yuppie Valley are gathered together in the secret mountaintop fortress (that's visible for miles in any direction) of Linus Torvalds. They are given a share of the power of Open Source and become mighty hackers for the cause of "Good".
Their mission, to fight the evil of Billgatus of the Microschlockians. (Or Caseus of the evil AOL empire, or Governmentus Overregulatum and it's nasty horde of encryption-fearing freaks). The possibilities are endless! That's what's so scary!
The only thing that could be worse is that the Sabanistas could replace the Linus character with Billgatus! **SHUDDER**
Okay. I admit it. I'm a sick individual. So sue me. My shrinks have all my money anyhow.
"David Every": I'm not going to attack John Carmack.
"David Every": Low level weenie
"David Every": Wrong
His "dicksizing" comment(s)
THIS is the problem with these Mac Zealots. They pull this "I'm trying to be polite" crap and flip snotty, completely biased, bass ackwards comments out. It's a wonder Every can breath with all the crap coming out of his mouth.
I have the same problem with most hardware and software zealots.
READ THIS ARTICLE PEOPLE! This is how NOT to address an issue. It's how to address an issue if you want to alienate people left and right.
Need to get some high quality RAM, a case, and a HD. Oh yeah, and a "Celery Sandwich".
About the ONLY thing I'm not happy about is Intel's decision to penalize people who want to experiment with the chips THEY BUY.
I can understand that they want to stop people from remarking chips and selling them OC'ed. But locking the chip down is NOT the way to go about it. You annihilate a market of people who like to tweak the hell out of their systems. Now I can also understand that Intel isn't happy about selling 450 Mhz chips for $80 when they're trying to bleed $400 more out of people. But these people are the legitimate owners of the chips they buy. Why keep them from taking their own risks?
I'll admit. I am NOT a chip designer, but I would think it cannot be that hard to alter the standards for a chip. Have an extra register in the chip that is read at boot time. Something that would read like:
Chip: Intel Celeron 300a
Multiplier: 4.5 (LOCKED)
Bus Speed: 100 Mhz
Chip Speed: 450 Mhz
Even if it came up as:
Chip: Intel Celeron 300a
Chip Speed: 450 Mhz
With such a setup, you would PHYSICALLY have to alter a chip (as opposed to just the cosmetic angle of scrubbing off the case and silk screening on another chip ID.
Intel is attacking the wrong group of people with this. They're not hurting the remarkers any. There's TONS of 300a's out on the market and 450 Mhz will be a pretty good standard for another year or so yet. They'll still make a killing ripping people off regardless.
INTEL CELERON 300a: Best price/performance ratio of ANY CHIP ON THE MARKET TODAY! Oh yeah, the K6-3 and K7 AREN'T EVEN ON THE MARKET YET! The 300a IS.
Hmmm. See a pattern here?
Also, since price hasn't been announced. Heck the STATS for the chip haven't been announced yet! How can you compare?
I'm getting sick of all these morons with their anti-Intel Chauvinism.
FACT:While the performance of the K6-2 and 3 lines are exceptional with the 3dNow instruction set supported, without it, the chip is a DOG. Plain, simple, straightforward. It's all about tradeoffs. With Intel you get better performace in absence of the gimmicks. Your tradeoff is a higher price-point.
Now I'll sit back and let a dozen people scream at me that I'm completely wrongheaded and get a bunch of anecdotal "evidence" to the contrary.
As the topic says, a lot of it fits the pattern of buyer's remorse (A bunch of people trying to convince themselves they got the best deal).
No. We can accept criticism. But the people who are criticizing need to know what they're talking about.
Though it's only a summary, with the associated lack of hard data, there are several holes and errors in there.
They're addressing issues that either are already being worked upon, or are issues of the hardware platform being used, and not the software.
Shoehorn Solaris onto SMP x86 and we'll see how well IT handles high end computing tasks.
They're comparing several OS'es on myriad, completely different hardware platforms. That's apples and oranges the last time I checked.

I took my little brother to see this one last night. After the credits rolled I looked down and found myelf sitting in a puddle of drool!
My brother had it right. The movie's a mind fuck!
What I especially liked were the way some of the effects were worked around the philosophy.
How Cypher looked at encoded data and, as he put it, "Only see's blond...brunette...redhead..."
Then you have Neo, at the end of the movie, looking at the agents and seeing data constructs.
EXTREMELY GOOD MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well. Hopefully these guys get their software-side shit together. Their hardware-side stuff is pretty killer.

I find it hard to be at all sympathetic to those money-grubbing bastards who call themselves RIAA.
The sooner we pull them down, the better.

Think about it. It's basically going to be a serial number inside the chip that you can use to check against Intel's product database. They're chucking a random number generator in there for encryption schemes because:

Even if it came up as:
With such a setup, you would PHYSICALLY have to alter a chip (as opposed to just the cosmetic angle of scrubbing off the case and silk screening on another chip ID.
Intel is attacking the wrong group of people with this. They're not hurting the remarkers any. There's TONS of 300a's out on the market and 450 Mhz will be a pretty good standard for another year or so yet. They'll still make a killing ripping people off regardless.
Ah well. I'll take what I can get while it lasts.

God. Not this tired old garbage again.

Let's see how far the P2 prices plunge.
