And new construction creates new roof space all the time...
The number of jobs it's going to create in the next 30 years or so will be phenomenal.
It'll correct downwards again after the initial build-out, but maintenance and new installs will still keep a certain modicum of people more or less permanently employed.
Do you have any idea how BIG the install base for solar is going to get?
Right now, solar and solar + battery are at the worst it's ever going to be again.
There's, quite literally, enough first-time install base out there to keep every person currently doing it until they die of old age, with a HUGE backlog of jobs.
And while the panels eventually drop off in efficiency after 20-30 years, there will be enough retrofit work in a couple decades to keep the industry going strong for pretty much EVER.
Not to mention a bit of extra capacity planned into an install can keep an install self-sufficient for decades beyond the initial lifespan.
Another generation or two of improvements in panel construction, battery engineering (with accompanying drops in price) and management software, and we should start seeing fully-integrated solar power and solar power+solar water heating "kits" hit the market. And that's when solar is REALLY going to take off.
Well, this is what dicking around, going every which way instead of concentrating on their core product(s) has got them. Worse still are their plans to neuter their own browser to make it more Chrome-like.
Let's hope they can attract people who actually know what the fuck they're doing and want to rescue Firefox from the smoking ruin it's threatening to become.
Sorry, but in business, if you care about your data you go belt AND suspenders.
You run a multi-layer backup strategy. You run antivirus. You don't use "server" devices as someone's workstation. Etc, etc.
Sure, your chances, especially with an intelligent, tech-savvy userbase are tiny. But security is about more than just obvious stuff. And if you can catch corner-cases, so much the better. Less effort and cost for the client in the long run.
As soon as you agree to compensate my clients for lost data when ransomware sneaks in under Defender's nose, maybe I'll pay attention to that brown stuff you're spewing.
Maybe the police department will now move on a backup system with multiple iterated backups so that if this ever happens in the future they can recover everything.
Until they're slapped with SIGNIFICANT, ongoing, escalating fines, or the company is seriously threatened with a breakup, not a single fuck will be given.
The main problem is that the "Nukes = BOMBZ!" crowd has so poisoned this country's regulatory structure with regards to nuclear power, that you have to have more money than Gates just to talk with them. Let alone starting up a project.
Then you have to set aside millions to defend against lawsuits.
Basically all these "dealing with fucking idiots" costs, NOT the budgeting for decommission and cleanup, is what skews the costs of nuclear so damn much.
Basically we need nuclear to get off fossil fuels in the near term.
If we can rebuild our grid system to accept distributed inputs better, and give battery storage tech another generation or two, it's ENTIRELY possible that renewables like wind and solar, augmented by Hydro and some minimal use of nuclear could supply this entire country.
Some other things that could help.
Adopting newer building codes that go beyond "Well, this worked in 1939!" But adopting codes that would specify mew buildings at least come CLOSE to NetZero standards. Doing so would increase construction price a few percent. But, ultimately, the homeowner would get all that money back when selling the home. Money burnt (literally) on monthly utility bills is cash you'll NEVER get back.
Hell, simply reinsulating and re-facing the exterior of an existing home can DRASTICALLY bump up the energy efficiency of the home.
Better education of builders on newer technologies like SIP panels and ICF (and moving away from pure "stick" construction).
Reducing energy use like this, better than any "green energy bling" is what will motivate people to look into things like rooftop solar and energy storage. Right now, most homes consume a ridiculous amount of power. Even if nothing's going on. Decimating power usage, and now people can get away with a modest battery array and an affordable solar setup that begins paying back IMMEDIATELY. And then, if you have a whole bunch of cloudy days, because your house is running more efficiently, you can stretch your battery usage longer or charge up from the grid during cheap, off-peak times.
Basically, the fact that Firefox basically chased away all their programming talent, and now have some cockeyed scheme to basically just wrap Chrome as "their" browser is VASTLY unhealthy.
On the flip side, it basically renders them utterly incapable of actually having a worthwhile opinion on the health of Open Source. Because they're essentially a marketing company now (and a shitty one at that). Basically Mozilla has become the symbol for pure lack of any discernible shred of excellence.
Like Warner Bros. "Acme Products", only not funny.
I'm sure your impactful work benefits mankind no end.
His work helps get (and keeps) people employed. Putting food on the table for an unknown number of people and their families.
So, at least in the short term, their work is more important than some jackass screaming "Global Warming! Global Warming!" while jumping up and down with their hair on fire and hoping someone will give them a grant so THEY can put food on the table.
Could it be, with the crash history of "autopilot", people are now using it more as it was intended? As DRIVER ASSIST, rather than turning it on and dozing off behind the wheel?
I mean, THAT couldn't affect numbers at ALL, right?
Yeah. It's a shitty "brand design" company now with a legacy browser they're hell-bent on turning into Chrome with a slightly different face.
They've become a company almost totally devoid of technical excellence and mutated into some hippie-activist commune that takes almost a year just to come up with an emoticon-ized version of their logo.
And even so, it's simple enough to say "No.", couched in suitably political terms.
You know what I'm talking about.
At this time *EVIL RUSSIA! EVIL RUSSIA!* we don't have enough information *EVIL RUSSIA! EVIL RUSSIA!* on the situation to make us comfortable pardoning him for stealing secrets and giving them to EVIL RUSSIA!
Basically, what would have happened to him, had he come home is he would have become Bradley/Chelsea Manning Mark 2.
He'd have been dumped in a prison. Rotted for a while. Then announced that he'd decided to cut his dick off and live as a woman. Turning him into a complete laughingstock meme and totally detracting from what actually happened.
I think Snowden likes his cock and balls right where they are...
While Apple, Google and Amazon all have electronic services delivery, Amazon is, by far, the largest in terms of physical plant for their vast goods-shipping network.
While yes, Apple and Google do ship, they simply don't have the sheer scope of what Amazon is dealing in.
So yeah, Amazon's going to come in behind those two.
"At this point, everyone has a roof"
Yet people still replace them periodically.
And new construction creates new roof space all the time...
The number of jobs it's going to create in the next 30 years or so will be phenomenal.
It'll correct downwards again after the initial build-out, but maintenance and new installs will still keep a certain modicum of people more or less permanently employed.
Like hell!

Now Microsoft will promptly fuck up Defender.
They already did that. It's detection routines are so weak you may as well not be running AV.
Oracle: Trying to price ourselves out of business since...well...SINCE!
Maybe the police department will now move on a backup system with multiple iterated backups so that if this ever happens in the future they can recover everything.
4 days?
Sorry, but it seems like the bigger Seagate drives get, the less reliable they become.
Pointless shit that allows you lots of time to think about being unemployed?
Liberal Arts?
Sociology?
Lesbian Dance Theory?
Charge money like money's going out of style.
STEM?
Law?
Business degrees?
You know, USEFUL jobs? Charge the bare minimum.
When I say "threatened", don't really mean "We MIGHT do this to you if you don't play ball".
I mean "Unless you play ball we ARE doing this. PERIOD."

So you're telling me that they're not in the process of reworking their plugin framework to be more like Chrome's limited plugin framework?
That they're not taking development and visual cues from Chrome?

Simply BANNING renewable energy?
DUMB!
Why, exactly, are you exhibiting faulty thinking?
One must not necessarily "win" at the expense of the other...
It takes all kinds man. And tunnel vision like yours helps nothing and nobody.

A complete waste of a company...
Sure he can!
It's a busy time right now! Right? RIGHT?
And even so, it's simple enough to say "No.", couched in suitably political terms.

You're right!
It's about taking advantage of retro hipsterism to rake in cash from stupid retro hipsters.
What was their R&D procedure?
Build a model, then a week of hookers and blow?
Fuck!
