  1. Apple, Sun...? on Software Piracy Due to Expensive Hardware, Says Ballmer · · Score: 1

    Does Ballmer base his claims on the fact that PC business has such a diverse user base?

    If not, I don't get it.

    I mean, every platform has users who don't obey license agreements. Be it copying the software or otherwise.

    Apple has been many times accused of having too expensive hardware (which I think is a myth from the last millennium), but still - the piracy on x86 PCs is way more common than on Macs. And the same thing on Sun, HP workstations etc.

    I really don't buy the Ballmer's explanation, which is based on expensive (?) hardware. I would say, that it's more likely that;

    a) large market share of Windows and applications for Windows

    b) expensive software

    is more likely the reason which has created this overbloated group of people who don't pay for their software.

    True.

    It may sound weird, but there were even wooden airplanes. Beechcraft used to build airplanes out of plywood.

    I recommend an excellent Princeton Architectural Press book called "Bent Ply", check it out;

    Bent Ply

    And about the parent. Well, the case doesn't look that good to be frank. I mean, the lines don't match, there are too much branches and stuff. And it's almost an insult to mix and match plastic and wood. If you want to make something out of wood, start from the scratch. A good example can be found from here (lots of pictures, text in Finnish);

    Wooden Handmade Case

    The case is made out of Finnish plywood (birch), which is also used in the famous chairs by Alvar Aalto. Like this one, for example, dating back more than seventy years to the early thirties;

    Paimio Chair

    Anyways, I like the idea of wooden cases. And not only from the aesthetic viewpoint. The resonance is radically different in wooden cases than in metallic ones. Instead of nasty "brrr", it's more like "mmmm", which is always a good sign :)

  3. Just couple of thoughts... on New Worms Feed on MyDoom Infections · · Score: 1

    Intresting.

    We had couple of infected computers, which had MyDoom on them. After extensive registry and file search I found information about the crackers, who were dumb enough to use rootkits with ASCII encoded configuration files. There was all the information for a serious bust there, where they could be found, their passwords and information, which could be used to get their IP addresses (which I did) and so forth.

    These fellows were using the infamous xs4all.nl from the Netherlands, but rest of the information indicated, that the people behind the attack were from Poland, Czech and Russia. This wasn't really a suprise for me, because many of the so called script kiddies are from these countries - at least, those who annoy people in the Western Europe and Scandinavia.

    I wish they could do something useful with their cut&paste -skills instead of making IRC bots and FTP servers. It just seems, that these people are just bored and not necessarily ill-faithed.

    From time to time, I try to go around the stereotype and drink a cup of that hot brewed creamy java or those weird coffees, like a coffee called "Illumination" (or something) from Mexico. However, any type of coffee I've tried can't stand a chance over a good cup of tea, preferably vanilla flavoured or decaf lemon tea.

    No jitters, no "I think I'll have to organize my desk or I think I'm going to die soon, if I don't organize my desk NOW, I'm going to..." feeling, but still something, which makes perfect companion for cookies and such.

    God save the Tea!

    (P.S. I know, that it was wrong to say "God save the Tea." It's possible, that the Queen somewhere is weeping, but still - I think that tea is probably the best thing that have come out of the British Empire, although they kind of ripped it off from Ceylon etc.)

    Yup, I was aware that by hiring the techs they wouldn't probably get the copyrights (or the IP) that SCO claims IBM is breaking (stealing). Yeah, you're probably right about that the employees going from SCO to IBM wouldn't still settle the whole deal, because they've their contracts with SCO. I was just thinking about how IBM could "teach a lesson" and still be fair to the ones who I think shouldn't be "taught a lesson", because their executives were being on a power trip.

    On the current situation, when people can't get a job from IT that easily, it would be horrible, if SCO techs would get their lose their jobs etc, because of people like McBride.

    I don't like politics that much, but I can't helping about compairing this way that SCO is acting to the so called "drunken revolution" in the ruins of Soviet Union then moving towards being a democratic Russia. In there, few old drunken (literally) communists, who used to be in power, thought that they could just take the power from the democratic government, with few shots of vodka and then show the people who's the Man. Of course, it didn't work that way and they got their asses kicked.

    From juridical viewpoint, would it be possible for IBM to hire the all technical (meaning coders and developers) staff from SCO and just simply put SCO out of business, leaving the marketdroids and executive staff soaking in their own... hey hey, kids... in debt?

    Just wondering.
