especially the "Platforms" link at the top of the page.
FWIF, the open systems are used to simulate all sorts of things, not just nuclear weapons. For example, I've been running materials science simulations on ASCI Frost.
Other interesting facts:
Asci Q is currently being developed by Compaq (uses thousands of Alphas). Expected performance: 30 TerraOPS
The final ASCI computer, currently under bid, will be ASCI Purple. Expected performance: 100TerraOPS. From the RFP: "6MW power max."
No. You own the copyright of the work itself. If I go to your gallery and purchase a copy of that print, I certainly can resell that print later to someone else. Otherwise there wouldn't be much of a market for artwork. I can even make copies of your photo in limited circumstances under "fair use."
The software industry is trying to license the _use_ of software itself. You don't own it, but can use it under the terms of the EULA. Soon, IMHO most software will be pay-per-use.
As others have already stated, this concept is not new: mainframe software has been like this since the beginning. On the other hand, in a corporate setting the lease usually includes updates and support. Something that MS and others of course charge extra for.
Microsoft does not have that burden! They make software - an arragnment of little electrons that MEAN NOTHING IN TERMS OF LIFE AND DEATH.
Software DOES control life and death situations! 911 systems, aircraft autopilots, nuclear reactors, F-22 fire control computers. The list is endless.
Thankfully, Windows is not found (yet) in many of these systems (other than a few Navy destroyers and 911 systems).
As a member of the team that built two of the last "failed Mars explorers," I can assure you that we (as a whole) learned absolutely nothing from the experience.
The failure was a political one, nothing more, and since the missions were run on a shoe-string budget there really wasn't much new in the way of science: the instruments were all left over from Mars Observer.
IMHO, the Europa and Pluto missions really need to fly. Nuclear propulsion is definitely more important, but find somewhere else to cut!
That is not my experience. I've been running OSX since the public beta and the OS has NEVER crashed on me -- not once. IE and OmniWeb on the other hand...
File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau for the city where UPS has its headquarters (Atlanta Georgia) at their web page (http://www.bbb.com).
My experiennce:
UPS took 2 weeks to deliver an important package that I had shipped 1-Day. After filing a complaint with the BBB, I got a call at home from the local UPS manager, and follow-up from the UPS office and BBB about the complaint.
Hopefully this gets you some results. If not, sue.
I would never ship UPS again, but I'm FORCED to! Has anyone else noticed that UPS has exclusive shipping contracts with just about every reseller?
Where is _MY_ representative? Disney bought mine.
Unfortunately, I live in Pasadena. Writing letters to my congress people Boxer/Schiff about DMCA/SSSCA is futile.

Sounds stupid, but no more so than an internet-controlled thermostat.

Actually the package is shown here and it looks pretty reasonable.

Interoperability with 802.11b is nice and all, but at least 802.11a uses reserved frequencies.
