  4. Its a carrot take it as that and make it your goal on Is Programming a Lucrative Profession? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I hate when colleges and high schools release ranges like this. You have to look at them for what they are motivational carrots to get you to go into a field. What you need to take from this is that, it is possible to make these ranges but you need to excel at what you majored in. Then show initiative and that you are adept at the skills you are utilizing in these fields.

Companies and hiring managers see their applicants as a means to an end. They are there to make money and if you cannot perform or don’t have the skills to bring a value to them then they will see that and pay you accordingly. But if you are a superstar and bring value to the organization then they will also reward that.

Fresh out of college unless you are extremely competent and have the self confidence to sell yourself in a professional manner then you will to take what you can get. Now in this economy things are a good bit different, I personally know some great IT persons and programmer that are out of work now that have years of experience.

I owned and operated a recruiting firm for several years and know firsthand how the hiring process works for many companies. They are typically trying to get you for the lowest price possible and keep you happy. Salaries are much more complex than just what you earn you have to integrate benefits and insurance into your salary as well. So keep that in mind when taking a job.

Also when in college try you best to get an internships and do your best at them. That’s one of the best ways to get hired onto a company and they already know what you can do so typically they will pay you accordingly.

Who cares. It's a job and in this economy that is saying a lot. If you don't want to wear it express your concerns in a logical though out manner without saying it's demeaning.

  10. Headhunters on When Do You Fire a Headhunter? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have owned a recruiting firm (sold it because I miss working in technology) and can tell you that most headhunters do not ever have your interest in mind. They are trying to fill a slot and make a commission from the company, no more. With the current economy you as a job seeker / contractor is a commodity that is fairly easy to find right now and will pass you over pretty quickly with little resistance unless you mean $$ to them.

There are all types of recruiting firms and you have to remember that they are trying to sell the contracting position twice.

    1) You to the company
    2) The company to you

The best advice I can give you is no matter what they tell you they are a sales people and to be cordial but always realize that they are there for one reason to place a body in position and reap the rewards. Also never put your eggs in one basket. Make contacts with many firms and find how/what fits for you.

    I hope this helps!

Skynet began to learn at a geometric rate. It originally became self-aware on August 29th 1997 2:14 am Eastern Time. Russia returned fire and three billion human lives ended in the nuclear holocaust. This was what has come to be known as "Judgment Day"

  14. India or China they both hurt the US economy on Can China Pull An India? · · Score: 1

I know Compaq does or did (not sure if they still do this) had a service that you could contract Indian programmers to do specialized applications for your company. The great part about it is that you paid the programming rate for India plus a middleman fee.
This is good for smaller companies that do not have a large budget for programmers. But the projects seem to take longer and there is a lot of red tape that you wind up dealing with.
I really think exporting technical jobs hurts the American economy now and in the future. When we off load work of this sort we are more reliant on the company who wrote the applications because debugging someone else code is not the easiest project. (Especially if it is a large project) Also, the expertise goes to the country that wrote the applications. If we keep standing around while the technical jobs go overseas the US will be left in the dark. Then who know America might be considered a third world country or no longer a super power in 80 years when the 4th wave of technology comes through.
