Its obvious that a legal solution to spam will not happen anytime soon. Instead, I personally take matters into my own hands: I registered my domain and found an inexpensive webhost ($10/mo can get you a truly decent webhost.) From there its easy to create all the email accounts you need, as well as install anti-spam software.
Alternatively one can just set up a *nix box off a DSL line and run your own mailserver with whatever anti-spam tools you choose. It saves you the $10/mo and its a little more work, but you do have complete control of the box. Doing this, my spam has fallen to almost nothing.
I know it may not be accurate in this particular case, but would overhauling SMTP help reduce spam and other UCE? STMP was built for a more, erm, polite era and seems like its failing in this day and age with regards to spam.
Am I alone in thinking that the people who are screaming the loudest about how eBay is an Orwellian nightmare, raping any shred of privacy we have would be the same people shrieking the loudest if they got scammed and eBay refused to release info on the scammer without some kinda court order?

That's what I really disliked about Heinlein: He was very right-wing. Starship Troopers was basically a pro-military propaganda piece (if you read it next time, replace "communist" or "russian" with "bugs" and see how spooky it is.) While I certainly can't begrudge someone their viewpoint or say they can't write how they feel, I just couldn't enjoy Heinlein because of it.
I was originally all excited to play SWG but the more I hear about it, the less I want to play it. Can anyone recommend a game out there that features substantial character development instead of just hack-and-slash? UO was pretty close: I liked that one could be a fisherman and do as well in the game as a wizard or fighter. I'm looking for something similiar to that.
By "banning" this software, they've made WASTE the must-have of every l33t kiddie around. Look at this thread for how many mirror sites have sprung up. Everyone wants it.
This is publicity you can't buy! I'm sure AOL knows this. As soon as WASTE gets a critical mass of enough users using it, AOL will "give in" and release it officially again. The end result of these actions? WASTE suddenly becomes a hugely popular app and AOL didn't have to spend a penny in marketting.
Perhaps if you spent less time on Slashdot and more time on Duke Nukem Forever, it would be on the shelves. I don't mean to be insulting. After all I'm a huge fan of your work with Half Life and Unreal, but I've been waiting *forever* for DNF and its just vaporware. Do you know - for certain this time - when it will be released?
Plus he obviously didn't see this is a discussion of GeForce cards, not ATI products. Clearly this is both flamebait and offtopic, and the mods are right to mod it as such.
Another triumph for Slashdot's half-assed moderation system! Time to go watch some Sailor Moon.
Overall, MorphOS doesn't have the sparkle that a modern OS should have. It feels like a nemnant of another era. A beloved era for many people for sure, but another, older era nonetheless. I don't see MorphOS (in its current shape) as the main attraction for this platform, unless Genesi puts a number of engineers to work hard to bring this OS up to speed and usability levels that other OSes today like OSX, Linux or Windows have.
you know your OS is bad when Linux is considered more usable than it is.:)
Thank you for taking the time to answer questions from the Slashdot community. A while back a Slashbot named Sub Duex Ex Machina (aka Sdem) created an account in the persona of a very attractive Linux booth babe. Apparently at some point there was some serious flirtation between you and this booth babe.
Once the truth was revealed, you were understandably angry at Sdem, and you proceeded to hack into his poorly secured W2K box. Although you did nothing malicious to it, you did post screenshots of his various goings-on to your website.
My question for you is this: Although Sdem's actions were rather sleazy, I'm wondering how far you can go to retaliate. Do you have a moral and ethical priviledge to access another persons computer? If so, how far can you go in your actions once you've accessed it? While meer screenshots are fairly harmless, would you have been justified in deleting his hard drive?
Jon, even when you change your name we still know its your crappy writing!

Well...I'm still pretty pissed about the outcome of the 2000 election. The majority of Americans did not want Bush to be the president. Based upon Bush's post-9/11 actions, I wish even more that Gore had won.
I don't mind if the Intro the CS classes use C++, Java or Lisp. I was looking for an upper division class that might have a focus on Obj C. So far I've found none, which is a suprise given Apple's traditionally large share of the educational market.
I've been looking for a school in (Northern) California that teaches Obj C as part of its curriculum, because I'd love to be able to code for the Mac. So far I've found none, although I have seen quite a few that offer Visual C++ coding.
As I read somewhere, the gov't wants to limit the amount of propellant not because the engines can be used as an explosive. Rather they don't want potential terrorists to be able to build rockets that could carry a possible dangerous payload a long ways.
Having said that, is there any terrorist worth his weight that won't be able to figure out a way around this?
