I'm glad to see the private sector making advances in space flight. Personally, I don't believe this is an area that our government should be spending any money on. I know that this won't make me popular with the Slashdot crowd.
However, there are other more important things that our government should be spending money upon. Education, health care and welfare programs are all vastly more important than space exploration. Space programs are a luxury, and in these tough economic times its a luxury that Americans should do without.
The fact that this program was successful shows that the private sector can shoulder the spaceflight burden. Hopefully our government will recognize this and begin to shift funding to programs that are more worthy.
I was going to reply to this in Morse code. Unfortunately Taco's lameness filter vetoed it. Not to troll or anything, but it seems that filter causes more problems than it solves. The trolls just work around it, while real posts get punished. Sigh....
Imaging-resource.com did a great review of a ton of rechargeable batteries. The electronics geek in you will enjoy his breakdown of how he conducted the tests.
You can come to Slashdot all you want and complain about what the RIAA is doing. But talk is cheap. If you don't support organizations working to change the laws, the RIAA will win out.
The Superiority of PHP over Perl

Hello Slashdot,
Recently I've had a chance to do some web design with PHP. Previously I'd used Perl because I'd heard from many people that Perl was the end all and be all of scripting languages for the web. Imagine my suprise to discover that PHP was vastly superior! I know this is a bold statement, but I have solid arguements to support it.
Before I begin, let me just clarify something. I'm not arguing that PHP is better than Perl in all cases. There is certainly still a use for Perl. Also, PHP isn't perfect but it does manage to fix many of the shortcomings I've had with Perl. Here are a few of the things I've noticed about PHP. Finally, I'm not the most talented Perl programmer out there. I generally prefer to use the vastly superior Python, but can use Perl if I have to.
* Ease of use. After about a day I had an excellent understanding of both PHP and SQL. I was able to get a stable, useable and presentable website up within 24 hours of reading the basics of PHP. Learning Perl took me weeks and I'm still not even as good with it as I am with PHP. I would definitely not recommend anyone new to programming begin with Perl.
* The OO of PHP is excellent. In my experience, it rivals Smalltalk. We all know that Perl's OO still needs work (whether or not OO is all that great is another discussion.) Hopefully Perl will be patched up so it supports such must-have OO features like introspection, reflection, self-replication and ontological data-points.
* Outstanding database support. PHP supports virtually every DB under the sun (although Berkeley DB is missing, oddly enough.) Perl seems limited to MySQL and PostgreSQL, and its really a kludge for the later. I've heard that this will be fixed in upcoming versions of Perl though.
* Speed. PHP is one of the fastest languages I've ever used. While it won't be replacing assembly or C, its definitely faster than Perl in almost every case, particularly in regex which has long been Perl's strongest point. I'm sure there are cases where Perl is equal to PHP, but I can't think of any at the moment.
* Portability. I can take PHP code off my Linux box and plop it onto an IIS server, or even one of those new Macintosh servers and have it run without having to change a single line of code. Try doing this with Perl! Its as though it was written in assembly, Perl requires that much rewriting.
* Graphics. PHP comes with a nice little graphics library. While I wouldn't use its to code the new Doom (VB would be a better choice) its adequate for most web pages, and should be considered as a substitute for Flash for certain things. Perl lacks a graphics library of any kind.
* Data Structures. Under PHP you can create any type of datastructure you need: Linked lists, binary trees, hash tables, queues, inverse Reiser-biased recursion trees, etc. Under Perl you're extremely limited in what you can do. This is because Perl isn't OO (so you can't create Node classes, for example, usefull in a linked list) and because it lacks pointers. Some of you may notice that PHP lacks pointers, but look deeper! Behind the scenes, hidden from the user pointers are used. Because of this, PHP can support complex data structures.
Again this is just my experience. I don't mean to offend any Perl coders because Perl was an excellent language. However, in certain cases it may behoove one to write the back end in PHP instead of Perl.
Come visit my lovely flat, in glorious Oakland. While staying in my cramped studio, you can experience:
The thrill of my cats, Manny and Linus wrestling over you in the middle of the night. Perhaps you'll even get to hear the Siamese serenade you at 3am with his beautiful and magistic song, entitled "Yowling at the Leaves Just Outside the Window".
The sound of random gunfire as MC Hammer narrowly escapes another crack deal gone bad.
My glorious kitchen, where you'll have your choice of over a dozen different varieties of Top Ramen!
A post-op transsexual neighbor guarenteed to give ya "da willys".
A cable TV where, during the daytime, you too can watch over a half-dozen judge shows! Accompany Egg Troll as we watch Judge Judy straighten out someone who claims that he had a right to wreck his girlfriend's Camero after he suspected her of cheating on him.
A huge collection of obscure, pretentious music that Egg Troll uses to convince himself he's really a hipster...a hipster who spends six hours a day on Slashdot.
Pretty eye-candy, but not much else...

I am a huge admirer of John Carmack and the work he's done with Id. That said I'm disappointed that he's not doing more than just recycling the same style FPS. Honestly, there hasn't been anything truly new in the FPS genre since CounterStrike came out ages ago.
It seems that everything imitates one of a few different styles. I'm saddened to see that an intelligent and creative man like John Carmack is just repeating himself.
Admittedly the cost of buying software is a valid concern. Yet its not the only one. There are also costs such as training and lost productivity. While Linux and the BSDs are excellent server OSes, I hope the Australian government would think long and hard before adopting them for workstation use.
As much as I love Open Source (I'm typing this via Moz on FreeBSD!), I don't think I could recommend it to Sally Secretary quite yet. Its still got a bit more polishing to do. In Gnome, for example, I occasionally get a dialog box that says " occurred. For more information, click on the help button." Naturally there is no help button.
Hopefully, though, a widespread adoption of it as a server OS will encourage those working on its workstation aspects to really get a move on so we can rid the world of MS products.
While Windows is good for my application, something that plays well with FreeBSD and Linux would be a major win as well.
What the author really means is "I intend to use this exclusively on Windows. But since this is Slashdot, I have to mention *nix somewhere to get it posted.":)
So does the US postal service, or PGP for that matter. Does that make it any less useful? No.
You're right. One can use these means to acquire child pornography. My concern with Freenet is that it could be hosted on my PC...without my knowledge of consent. Right now, its this factor that keeps me from adopting Freenet. But that's just my opinion....
It seems to me that poverty and easy access to firearms is much more of a cause of violence than videogames. All videogames do is occasionally have the misfortune to draw some violent people to them (although only a small percentage of videogame players are sociopathic, mind you.)
I just wish the media would give these causes as much airtime as they do trumped-up, sensationalistic stories.
Another example of why we should stop shipping slaves to the US. These africoons eat monkey brains and come infested with these diseases such as AIDS and SARS.
I don't know which is more appalling: your sense of racial equality or your understanding of virology.
Why should I care what some occasional contributor to the kernel source thinks about this. Granted I'm sure he has some insights, but there are more important people whose opinion's I'd rather hear.
Funny, I use Winamp to play AVIs and they open just fine. The icons are all correct and everything. I just told Winamp to associate all video files with it and...viola, everything works great! So I don't think its something nefarious MS is doing. From your description it may be a bsplayer issue.
As I recall, this individual wasn't prosecuted for what he said. It was because he was trying to break into military computers. What did he expect to happen?
Sounds to me like they're trying to find Ender Wiggins.

Not really an idea for a course, per se, but I wouldn't let users install any software onto PCs. Good luck!

Yeah but an hour after you install it, you want to order another one.

Heh, this means I can get my tenticle plant rape anime AVIs so much faster now!
A Dell representative explained to me why they don't ship to Hungary. They're answer: "My hovercraft is full of eels."
Hope this helps!

I bet that would work pretty well, too.
