  1. Re:Did us a lot of good... on Budget Issues Force Spy Satellites Into The Open · · Score: 0

I respect the cynical nature of the post, but our sats did just fine in what they were designed to do. They gave overall battlefield location information to the theatre commander and allowed him to create a plan to destroy the Iraqi Army soundly. These space based platforms were not intended to look for one person in one spot, that would be silly. You have Predator/Global Hawk for that sort of information gathering.
Secrecy and Stealth is the only defense these space based platforms have, period. Once people know where/when you'll make your pass, you might as well send your satellite off into the Pacfic Ocean because it becomes nearly worthless as an intelligence platform.

Goverment found a pretty easy way to avoid any such possiblity. Cross shread your sensetive paperwork, add water, mash it back into paper pulp, and shread again.
Something like that, I can't remember the exact forumla for paper destruction..
Just remember having to feed the shreading machine what looked like raw paper.

Wonder if they could makes heads or tails from something like that?

The American people have become increasingly intolerant to casualties of war.
I currently work with and for the DoD, and this specific fact is always resident in the field commanders mind. Risk avoidance, "force protection", and unmanned vehicles of all sorts assist that commander in protecting his/her forces while still being able to accomplish the mission at hand. Don't ever underestimate the U.S. Armed Forces awareness of the American public. Yes there will still be casualties, but if this style of technology can protect lives, how can it be a band thing?
The technoglogy at use here has already proven itself in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosova, Isreal, and a myriad of other less known conflicts. I for one love the idea and the concept of being able to best your enemy on the field, while getting as many of my countrymen home as possible.

I actually worked for the design firm that developed the TiVo system. I will say that I rememeber the PM and engineers saying something about how were they supposed to develop a system, PVR's, that will more then likely be patented by ReplayTV in a few months.
Seems to me that just beacause a company doesn't jam their new tech into the collective hearts and minds of customers, just to get to market first, it doesn't mean they didn't make the tech or deserve the patent.
