I understand your point and can see why they would do that ... but it would be hypocritical for them to start the war cry of "Digital" distro doesn't work. In fact, other industries such as Software and Online Multimedia ( e.g. Flash, Fan Movies ) have made it work. Why not just limit it to say 1 song / month = set rate. That way the more I pay the more I can listen to... with no limit on the total # of songs. They can refuse to answer the door unless it's somebody they know and so on and so forth... One person me and some other people tried to serve took about 2 months to do the job. Google does the same thing. It's not like Altavista has this special feature that Google doesn't. In fact I've found the main reason many people are not happy with Google is due to the fact that they don't use it enough to understand the best way to write a query.

My wife was looking for some information and since she's heard me say that Google is the best engine to use she tried it but couldn't find the information. When I got home I did the same thing and found the information on the first query. It's all in the fingers baby... but seriously like any tool it takes time before you learn to use it the way it's meant to be used.

There are too many factors that affect this. The fact that it is a survey e.g. asking somebody and dealing with the flaws that go with Surveys ( lying, altering the truth, fear of reprisal ) and then doing the survey based on what would seem a small sample that might not really be representative of the whole of College Students.

    1. Delayed posts. Make all comments by a non-subscribed author delayed until either 1 hour has passed or 5 unique ads have been viewed.

    2. Advanced Moderation system. We all strive to get those mod points ( why else would you want Karma? ) so allow another tier of moderators. These being the *elite* few who are paying subscribers.

    3. Offer people the ability to host a small gif ad as their sig in exchange for 200 views w/out ads. Hence each post they make will be an ad in itself.

    4. Priority in the submission que. I haven't been accepted for a story yet. But if paying increases my chances of getting a story on the 'Holy Grail' of slashdot... the frontpage, I might just consider.

How many people are still waiting for homeland defense and security that applies to us physically such as the planes I fly and the bridge I drive over to get to work?

This is ridiculous. If the only thing Congress can do with their time is write laws and bills that make their *supporters* and Lobbyist happy then this country is in a sad state indeed. We vote these people into office. WE should be the ones they answer to. Not AOL Time/Warnder. Not RIAA/MPAA. Not Company A or B. This is pathetic and I'm getting sick of the waste of taxpayers dollar paying these people to make laws that are designed to 'burn us, make companys happy'.

Let's just all get together and give all of our money to our local congressman. Then we'll take our childrens money and give it to a company of our congressman's choice AND THEN jump off a bridge.

    Are they different crimes?
    Yes.

Should they use the same justice system?
    Yes.

The same applies. Although the nature of Google is really pertaining to websites ( some of which do have illegal material ) we cannot say that it's different since the core functionality is the same. It's possible for P2P to return purely legal material and Google to return only those links to illegal material. Should the focus of the RIAA switch? I'm sure that they would but the point is you should not be able to sue because of 'potential' uses.

We ban guns in this country. How about steak knives? I can kill with one of those. How about a nail file? I can do the same with it. We know it's best to work on those that are apt to kill. Not the tool. Those who wish to enforce copyrights should focus on the infringers.. not the tools. As soon as the tool is shut down... people will find another... perhaps even Google.
