But your wrong because this *is* a private website, not a political forum for and by the people. If I'm paying money into this then I want to be able to have points to select what's good and what's not so others that pay will have the power to really control what *we*, the payers, want to see. Basically, this is a way to offer something "real". If I pay money I am therefore a more important citizen of slashdot and should be able to control the content you get for free that suits mine and others liking. Maybe not more important as in what I provide via content, but I keep the ship afloat and I want something in return.

If you want me to pay about $20.00 a year, and I will, then I want to have full moderation. At least 5 points a day. Let the people who pay decide what they want to read. If I'm paying I want "something". Trolls are not going to pay so they won't abuse this. Let people who don't pay still "earn" their points but damn it I feel that I will be in a group of similar people willing to pay (those that love this site so much and want to make it as good as it can) that we can help each other sift shit stories. I think the trick to having a pay iste is to give me something "real". Anyone object?

It doesn't have to come at the expense of it though. If you spend the time to make what your doing well designed you will have both. Granted, when you set out to design something, function is the first thing you are concerned with but eventually it must have have beauty. That is what seperates the great engineers from the regular ones.
An example is reading. When you start out it's all functional reading to make sure you have comprehension etc. but eventually when you master that you take on great literary works, poetry and deep thought. But I truely beleive that form is just as important in the end product.

You are correct and I agree. The problem with many of our geek types is they have no concept of art. It is all function and never form. How many geeks have taken art classes or can talk about art history? Hardly any at my school. How many even have an appreciation? I don't know how many more bad user intrfaces I can deal with from these people. Form and function are one.
I just thin it is important to reconize quality, art and substance.

I learned C++ first and then Objective C took about 3 hours.
But, if done right this would be lots of great new programs could easily be made for a Linux platform. GNU Step is the best way!

  11. It Depends on Can OO Programming Solve Engineering Problems? · · Score: 1

If you are just trying to solve an equation or have a program do one thing it is necessary to use OOP to get this done. Although OOP is more of a concept then anything. It's a way to look at the world. Dividing everything into the smallest possible bit it can and then stacking all your objects together to create a specilized thing.....like nature does with us.

OOP is intended for larger applications and not necessarilly just for programs that only require a function or so.
But, let's say you are an architect and are designing buildings. It would be nice to have a heiarchy of objects similar to the tools used to build a house and then be able to use you electronic tools to simulate real tools. This way you have a collection of tools that you can "pick up" and use at will without worrying why they work.

Also, since when is C++ OO? At least a good OOP language. Sure, I guess I was fooled into thinking it was in my programming courses but if you want a *real* OO language that works how OOP should try Small Talk, and if you want to stay in the C world try Objective C, the best OO C. Just because you have to subclass like mad doesn't make it OO. =)

As you probally know you can program Cocoa in Objective C++, which doesn;t mean you have access to any C++ Cocoa librarys but you can use your old, crummy C++ syntax with it if your afraid to learn objective C. I had the same fear at first but then I decided to invest 3 hours into learning Objective C and ta-da, I'm now *also* and objective C programmer.
What are you going to say 30 years from? "Where is my C++!! it's all I will ever learn!"
Face it, C++ is crap compared to Objective C and I can see no reason a competent C++ programmer can not learn Objective C and *real* object oriented programming.
C++ isn't the end all of coding. In fact, it's a very poor language.

Do this for weeks. At the end of all the time, use the (x,y) cords and divide the city into 4 quadants and start to make equations of where you have been....try and see where you are most likely to be..... see what times you are most likely to be where, etc...Could be some good math to do..useless? sure, but fun if yer a geek like me:)

Programming OS X in Cocoa using objectiveC (a BETTER alternative to C++...for a GUI anyways) is a great hobbie I have right now and makes for a great profession. the number of mac users to programmers is great.
Go ahead and mock Apple and Macintosh..
I don't care...I don't need these "experts" to tell me what if my computer or OS of choice is "relevent" or crap or great for that matter. Apple makes a fine product and I love it. Also, usually I can tell people everything about their OS (linux/windows/be) but they can't tell me a thing about Mac. What do *you* really know about a Macintosh anyways?
Besides, the PPC is a fine chip and the assembly is a lot more exciting then X86 =)
