Politics! thats what determines what gets into a corporation. The company I work for is deep in HP's pocket, therefore 95% of the intel boxes we have are HP (the rest are IBM thinkpads). We do have many of thier larger servers running HPUX and many IBM RS/6000 and other IBM boxes on the AIX platform.
But it was a deep pocket political move that got all the HP intel machines in there.

    Good posting

I have installed Linux boxes to provide specific services for customers. But when it came down to thier vendor provided software they had no choice, but to go with Novell, NT, SCO or whatever.
At home I can run what I want and serve my own needs as far as the OS's I use.
The fact that now you CAN do many things for a workstation with linux just pushes it a little further.

Someone above posted that "Behaviour is independent of technology".
Almost everyone has boxes of pictures that never get looked at. They could be burned or thrown away on a whim or accident. The same goes for digital media. It can be lost due to poor storage, obsolete technology, etc. It's pretty much the same no matter what medium is used. It's up to the person that wants to perserve thier records to develop the behaviours to ensure that they last.

This has been alluded to, but...
EVERYTHING given enough Time and Temperature will burn and/or decay.
Old way's of doing things will be lost and found.
Those folks who's job it is to archive things will do so in the best possible way. They continually improve thier methods. They continually revisit past methods of preservation, undoing damage done by thier predecessors.
So to with the Digital Images. Our current formats wont be lost. There will be someone that given enough time and inclination will try to restore them.
If the writer of the thesis is afraid of photographers editing in the field, too bad. Unless they are on staff they have total control over what they present to the purchasers of their photos. Staff Photographers should be given enough "film" to complete an assignment. The publication they work for would be responsible for having policies in place to store whatever they want for how long and in whatever format they desire.
TV stations have been archiving newscasts for over 30 years on video tape. Aside from the technologies it isn't any different that any digital broadcasts that are archived today.

Not everyone learns at the same rate. You may be a whiz and pick up on things easily, but that poor dumb sap next to you with siblings for parents needs the repetition to train his problem solving skills.

Thats the big problem with public education in the US its pretty much dumbed down in most areas to the LCD so that if there are no accelerated coursed, the bright kids end up staring out the window or getting into trouble.

I had to learn how to do square root, trig & calculus functions by hand when I was in school 20+ years ago. And the only way I got through the tests for the finals was from the constant working of problems in class and homework. I used a calculator at times but back then it wasn't much faster.
I couldn't do it now, but i'd like to believe it helped me with my problem solving abilities I use everyday.

The problem is that all school does is repeat over and over again the same information, and in most cases it never sticks permanently.

That is part of the learning process, Repetition.
Not everyone gets it on the first go around and the Repetition serves to ingrain these building blocks into us so we can draw on them when we are thrown into a situation.

Our natural ability to learn is aided by this process. Thats why Parents when teaching their children to speak constantly repeat words. This helps the child progess in learning to form words with his random sound. Sure a kid may learn how to speak eventually without this repetition but how much longer would it take?

Repetition is a basic building block of education.
