    If it was ME that was doing the testing; I WOULD compile, compile, compile.
    But it's Mindcraft, I would not want them too.
    It's a SERVER!!
    Not just a 'Web server' both should be running RAID 5.
    Think about it; would you run RAID1 on a real server?
    If you do; I don't think I would trust you with my data.

    I am sure that we will do better, I wonder if they changed the hardware? I am not sure that
    with the AMI RAID driver will do much better, but everything else should work.
    I don't expect them to change hardware, and to be honest I don't want them to, it's up to us to
    be real world too.

    Three things I hope they do:

    Use kernel 2.2.pre7 patch3, it's a very nice kernel.

    More RAM, at least to the two gigabyte limit.

    One OS on the drive, and real world raid5, not raid0, this is a server stupid.

    The right amount of swap I have wondered and wondered about that one.

    A correctly tuned apache server, at least use the .rpm, do not compile unless you really
    know what your doing.

    SAMBA, use the damn package unless there is a GOOD reason not too.

    Get rid of the enterprise edition; server is what most people will buy it's a bit more real world.

    And last document better; I would feel better if I new exactly why something failed or not.

    I need to ask this question, what is so fucking new about this? It keeps on happening, If you don't now the quote from above, it's from a kid who blew away some other kids, when asked "Why." he said "I don't like Mondays"

    It's not the "internet" it's not "quake" it's not even "TV".
    I was dressed in black in '79' so it's not being dressed in black.
    I was a outcast, and many of my friends where too.
    Even had one kid bring a gun to school.

    Some how it all reminds me of an experience I had seeing repo-man in the theater.
    I was the only person laughing no one else got the jokes; you had to have been a outcast to get it.

    The comments are about who we are, it's the neatest bunch people,
    not some bunch of "social misfits" but a bunch of articulate interesting people.
    For some reason this survey has striped the veneer of anonymity away.
    It's very cool.

    Good summary.
    Seems to me that what we really need is a bench marking rebuttal; is there another
    benchmark going on? I saw that in Jeremy Allison's article he was working with PC Week,
    does anyone else know any other active bench marking going on?

    I think that the only way to prove against FUD is education, bench marking can go a long
    way.

    I have about 7 Linux servers with no down time, great performance on lesser hardware then
    my commercial servers in my company, that should be proof enough; but my pointy haired
    boss still asks "Why not NT?". I do not need any more fuel for that fire.

    We need Benchmarks on larger servers, with more memory, RAID, and a high-end server
    guide.

    rather dislike using Red Hat, I am a dyed in the wool Debian user, I think technically and
    ideology, Debian is superior.

    But those three names make a FUCK of a lot of difference to me as a person,
    and as a Linux user.

    Red hat is not evil, Rather Like going to the dentist, tolerated, beneficial but painful.

    If Red hat had 99% of the "linux" market I could care less as long as the Linux kernel
    standards are open, and there are no proprietary drivers/protocals.
    I believe that it will not happen.

    Red hat the company has never to my knowledge been anti-other-distros; that is the key.
    Microsoft on the other hand, is anti anything other then Microsoft.

    Distros are a matter of taste, are you not glad that, you have many choices?

    Umm Modules are not moduler? or gee patches ki of kinda work to.Even Windows 95 drivers are dependent on what version of win 95 you have. AT LEAST YOU have a option to upgrade. go try to buy a copy of win95 osr C. :)

    Well he port scaned you. look to see what services you are running, are you using imap, pop3 or ftp ? turn them off, if your not.

    localhost thing is a bit odd, not tring to be a alarmist but that looks very fishy.
    check all your logs first, if there is any question unplug the network connection to the system, and go over it with a fine tooth comb.

    The only truly secure ststem is one that is not connected to the network and off. :)

    Remember backing up and staying current are your first and best friends.

    Seemed almost a echo of #linux, a year ago, I gave up on IRC because of scriptkiddies, and questions about how do I compile eggdrop/boink/smurf.
    How many times do you have to have someone try somthing stupid to give up?
    This HOWTO is a sad testament, to the sheer volume want-to-be crackers out there.

    I am 33 years old, and I love Linux, *BSD holds no interest to me.
    Age does not = being conservative the thought is just silly as hell.
    I rather like the idea of using GNU tools first, *BSD does not, to my understanding.
    Being on Linux-kernel makes me feel like a kernel developer, even though I have never contributed a line of code, but the idea that I could has it charms me.
    Systems that are controled social chaos (meaning Linux) tend to be more stable, over the long run then, forced ridgedy (*BSD) are in the long term.
    Last Linux gives more choices, if you like infinte control chose Slack, Ease of use chose SUSE, stablity Debian, Or Out and out performance Stampede.
    There all fun, slightly chaotic, and the right choice for you.

    It's nice to see ZD doing some anti-fud, I wonder if there will be more. This whole thing smacks of the anti-trust trial video.
    I heard a interesting thing, about technology writers having a more jaundiced eye towards Microsoft after some of the trial shenanigans. It maybe that this is a sign, that technology as a industry, is groing up a bit.

    Debian would be a good distro to start with they/me encourage basing other distro's on it.

    It should be easy, for one it's easy to seperate church and state EG Corel packages (Non-free-corel, the state) from the base install (free, the church).

    What will really shine in all of this is is dpkg apt and the .deb format. Dselect might be quirky I rather like it.

    I know the there is a arm port I bet that will help too.

    Seems to me this was written by

    A) Lawyer.
    b) A person that does not understand software development.
    c) Believes that the main reason that Open Software exists is; as ONLY a response MS.
    d) has a political aggenda not related to software in general.
    e) Not comprehending that, Linux is a cultural statment, not a political one first.

    That said; Now on to my political statements.

    I wonder what f**** rock they crawled out of, and they should go back re-read there own Conservative pseudo-intellectual manafesto's, EG Ann Rand's Fountain head.

    Of course I would prefer a Yellowfin but not all of us are that lucky.

    But I thought that the NX chipset only did up to, 4-way CPU's.
    Is this vapor-hardware? I know that Intel is working on 4+ systems but they are not out yet.
    I am pretty sure that I am right.

    Try pppconfig in debian it took me 5 minutes to be on the net.
    Maybe it's a anomaly but I don't think so, with the same login it took me much longer with Redhat/Caldera.
