    the MacOS has had CO-OPERATIVE multitasking longer than Win2K has existed. The lack of protected memory has long been a problem, however.

    I'd agree with that wholeheartedly, under OS9 I'd either have to use Acrobat Distiller or InDesign to get my pages out to pdf easily, under OSX it's a breeze, the next step is to allow editing of pdfs in Text Edit. I'm sure that Windows will be where OSX is now in 3-5years as usual... :-[

    as it seems that Crunh-Vec G4 client is the ultimate RC5-64 client at the moment, why doesn't someone code a "Crunch-SSE2" client and make use of some of the P4's abilities? Maybe this is not possible for some architectural reason I don't know about, but surely this is EXACTLY the type of application that Streaming SIMD architectures were built for in the first place?

    yep, the G4 is the undisputed KING of RC5-64. The main reasons for this are the fact that the G4 client is parellelised (is that a word?) for Altivec and - apparently - the RC5 code fits entirely in the G4s backside or L3 cache, thus avoiding trips out to main memory. My G4 450dp runs it at 8Mkeys, my G4 733 at 7.9Mkeys (with the new, 7450 optimised client). By contrast, the Altivec-less G3 500 manages 1.6Mkeys. Some difference!

    loads of people overclock their G3s and G4s you muppet. My G3 400 (Yosemite) runs very sweetly at 550Mhz with no additional cooling, and my G4 400 (Yikes!) runs at 500Mhz. Apple made it more difficult to adjust multiplier with the Sawtooth models onward - so I can't overclock my dual 533 Mystic without soldering :-[, but there's a japanese guy who overclocks EVERY machine Apple brings out. he got the G4 733 (Digital Audio) running at 1066Mhz, and there are several people who have upped the bus speeds on their iBooks recently.

    Sony is perilously close to achieving a monopoly in the supply of broadcast television electronics. This has been achieved simply because Sony spend so much on R&D, they've been leading the market for decades.

    Not quite, the X-Box competes directly with PS2 and the Gamecube - both of which seem to have either better games already, or pthe promise of better games in the future. If there was something on the X-Box one FIFTH as good as MGS2, it would be a contender. In the UK, X-Box is priced at DOUBLE the rate of the PS2. You'd be mad to buy one at the moment IMHO.

    that doesn't make sense. If you have an NTSC DVD, the nominal picture size is 720x480, which won't EVER scale very nicely to 1024x768, but would scale nicely to 1280x960 (if it were a 4:3 xfer). For 16:9 FHA movies in PAL (720x576) 1024x768 is PERFECT, as the display will show PRECISELY 1024x576, which is the exact square pixel equivalent of 16:9 FHA.

    I don't have any L3 cacheless 7450s, best place to look for answers is at www.barefeats.com. Incidentally, the L3 cache sizes for recent (7450) PowerMacs are: 733Mhz "DA" 1MB@183MHz, 733Mhz "Quicksilver" OMB, 867Mhz "Quicksilver" 2MB@217Mhz, Dual 800MHz "Quicksilver" 2x2MB@200Mhz.

    slight correction - iDVD compresses at 2:1 ON A 733MHz G4. On a faster one, it's even faster. On a 800dual, it's real time.

    At what? That new iMac will encode your DVD at around 1.5X. The power is there in the G4, not all applications exploit it, but that's true of the P4 to some extent, too. The G4 is a good CPU, for general purpose work my 733Mhz version goes about as hard as an 1100Mhz Atlon T'Bird. For video compression (what I do for a living) it goes about as hard as a 1600Mhz AthlonXP (got one of them too).

    just like "it's only an island if you look at it from the sea", the Mac is only proprietary if you look at it from Windows. The logic to your argument is that Apple will only be competitive when it's building x86 PCs with Windows installed on them at a lower price than Dell or Compaq. Stupid really.
