I think you're doing the USA an injustice there - your system is actually much better in theory, though I personally don't believe in an elected (or hereditary) head of state - that role is not needed beyond a prime minister figure IMHO. Unbelievably, it's also possible to purchase American newspapers at retail outlets in major European cities!
