Ugh. Obv-troll, but to combat FUD I would like to point out that there is, in fact, no violation here. Source need not accompany bins. A promise of source disclosure fulfills term 3 part (b) of the GPL. They don't even need to disclose the source until someone requests it, and then they don't need to make it available online -- they could ship it on CD or floppy if they were so inclined.

First off, it is already implemented in the Slashcode. And second, using that functionality for that purpose is the Wrong Way. If somebody controversial snuffs it, I should be able to shout "Hurray!" from the rooftops even if you feel like staring at a blank computer screen for a couple of minutes. As such, if a moment of silence if justified it should fall to the mods to mod everyone down who posts before a suitably reverent pause -- OR YOU COULD JUST NOT CLICK THE LINK FOR A MINUTE OR TWO, AND YOU'D NEVER NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE. :P

  9. Re:Idiot on Caching Torrent files in DNS · · Score: 1

    Sir,

I'm actually not too sure what bothers you so much about this. DNS servers are, overall, very smart beasts. They know how much memory they're allowed to consume, and drop records from their cache to stay within their limits, based on certain criteria -- primarily 1. the frequency they are requested and 2. Their TTL value (pull-date).

If a record isn't getting requested very often, it is more likely to drop out of cache. A few hundred extra bytes in one record may make another record more likely to fall off the cache earlier -- but that record would most likely have been infrequently accessed and stale verging on expired.

If the entries associated with a torrent aren't requested very often then they'll get bumped down and drop off too. If they are requested, then it's legit: DNS is connecting clients with servers like it is supposed to, and all's right in the world.

    Or am I missing something?

A small, but interesting nitpick: eye color is not built in to the cells, but is a result of enzymes. This is why dietary changes will change your eye color. Thus if you had a delivery mechanism for an in-place substitution of the relevant alleles your eyecolor would change very quickly.

As to the barrier of entry, that's a matter of perception. All told a Segway does everything a car would do for me (I'm an urbanite, YMMV), and I'd expect to spend a rather large amount more on a new car than I would on a Segway. So given that (in my case) they're (almost) functionally equivalent, and one's a hell of a lot cheaper... *shrug* Even factoring in rental car costs, etc. the Segway is almost perfect for me -- if I could only link it into my longer commute.

Sure, my bike (after customization, mods, etc) is about a fifth of the price of a Segway, and is better exercise besides -- not to mention that it goes on the busses, I still wish I could just lean my way to the corner store and back when I want the second six-pack. Also, have you seen the hills in Seattle? You want to attack that on a bike? You're a brave soul!
