  1. I think it's a matter of interp... on Mac OS X Slow for Web Browsing? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Four years ago I purchased an iMac G3/233. At the time, it was fairly fast, and it remains to be a speedy machine, even today. With 96 MB of RAM it runs Mac OS X well, and my mother now uses the computer daily to stay in touch with me. The average consumer Mac user (iMac/iBook) is more concerned that things /work/ rather than how fast they work.

Mac OS X on a G3 isn't "painfully slow," but it isn't a speed demon (haha) so to speak, either. Mac OS X on a G4 rocks all over, and anyone who thinks otherwise might want to install an OS X native browser and stop whining. =)

  2. Why not? on AMD Takes Microsoft's Side in Antitrust Case · · Score: 1

Think about it. AMD needs a nice, friendly relationship with Microsoft. Microsoft has no choice but to be nice and cooperative with Intel. But AMD? Microsoft could put their processor division out of business in an instance if they so desired.

So what happens? Microsoft gets a much needed ally in its industry, something you'd be hard pressed to find today. And AMD gets on the nice-list for a little while.

It's business strategy at its finest, but definitely most blatant and obvious.

  3. The Bottom Line on EchoStar Asks Supreme Court to Let Unlock Local Channels · · Score: 1

    Is always money.

For a long time the affiliates in B.F.E. were always concerned that the big network-owned stations (WCBS, WABC, WNBC) would come into their area and gobble up all advertising revenue.

Thus we ended up with the mix-and-match laws that we have now. For a long period you could get the affiliate feeds on C-Band if you had a waiver on file from your local affiliate. Then DiSH and DirecTV began offering certain local stations in urban areas. Still, though, the red tape made it ridiculous for both the satellite company, the affiliate, and the customer.

It does make sense to throw out all the regulations. Most affiliates are even against the current system. But how does the Supreme Court have jurisdiction?

  4. Possibilities on How To Implement A Database Oriented File System · · Score: 3, Insightful

The possibilities with the Be file system were pretty much infinite. There were little things in the OS that would show you this, the address book and email "client" being some great examples. It was incredibly powerful. The only problem was when transporting files from one operating system to the other. And, even in this, Be did an admirable job.

My fear, and I think the reality is that Microsoft will not be so kind.

  7. Apple and Disney used to be buddies... on Disney Blames Apple For Music Piracy · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is a pretty shocking accusation. I have to wonder if Eisner shared his planned comments with anyone at Disney or Apple beforehand? That is a pretty striking statement from someone who has in the past supported Apple.

Evenmoreso, Apple pretty frequently says they support people keeping the music that they own on their iPod and in iTunes. There is a little clause with iTunes and iPod telling consumers to be responsible and only store music they own.

Eisner is being a bit extreme. He should learn to pick his battles. Picking a fight with Apple is a bad idea... Especially when you have fish like MusicCity and Gnutella to fry.

    Bad business decision. Really bad.

  12. Fiorina is more than just your average exec... on HP Buys Compaq · · Score: 5, Funny

The woman is damned smart. Personally, I would have to rank her as the most intelligent, dedicated, and insightful executive in Silicon Valley. A merger of this size will take many long nights, over many years, to fully become a reality. And I think Carly Fiorina has the dedication, knowledge, and experience to do it.

Think about it. She did wonders at Lucent.

I think what is most important, what differentiates her from the other executives in the industry, is what she knows about this industry.

"Virtually all meaningful advancements in business, society, and life are not achieved through the boldy acts of a few, but the everyday acts of many."

Cut through the marketing fluff of that quote she made last year. And you see that she really does have a clue of what runs a company. What runs the whole industry. Truly, what has, and always will run this world.

Her degree is, if I remember correctly, not in information technology or business... But actually in medieval studies. What do we learn by studying history? The mistakes people have made, and hopefully we learn to not make them again.

She's a smart business person. She sees the mistakes Compaq has made with Digital and Tandem. She knows to not make those same mistakes again. And she knows that her job depends on not making any mistakes. The hp Board is patient, but they're not going to sit around for a decade, while she's pushing her sixties still trying to get hp back on track. Carly has a year at the most to prove that she can head this megaconglomerate. She knows how to streamline (see latest quarterly report).

If she can pull this off, I would have to credit her as the most successful executive in history. If not, she can move on over to Nevada and take up stripping.

Which do you think she's planning on, and working towards?

No doubt. The Japanese companies are simply more intune with the gaming market that Microsoft seems to be. Console developers everywhere but America will take one look at the Xbox and laugh; they are console developers, not PC software makers.

If Microsoft wants the Xbox to suceed, they're going to have to look at their product in a worldview. Because this so-far displayed American-centric view is going to get them nowhere.

I've seen the site that plans to do it on a user-informal level... But would this be a feasible business or non-profit venture? (Say UofC and UIatC in Chicago, or AUofP and UofPatS in Paris...?)

I guess I am a little bit obsessive-compulsive about paying for services, but I do pretty heavily police what I pay for.

The majority of businesses that value their customers do not mind doing a pro-rata credit for service or product outages. Verizon, Hearst Magazines, Ntelos, Sprint... They are all companies that I have had positive experiences with.

It is unfortunate that Qwest doesn't appear to be a bit more understanding. If I am to understand the article and the situation correctly, it was preventable... Had they been using a more secure platform. Additionally, the poor support is unexcusable.

    Qworst? =)

It really is a better business practice to issue credits to those with legitimate claims, while not admitting liability. And if someone feels they need to take it further, they will.

I guess I have to be nicer to Verizon. They could be as mean as Qwest.
