Funny thing is, a large number of American financial companies are owned by Canadian banks (TD Price Waterhouse). So if we had the Patriot Act, we'd be entitled to browse the financial information of any American using those companies. You would hear an uproar about that. And you'd see Americans dealing solely with American owned companies if they knew.
I happen to work in Canadian healthcare and am quite concerned with where my health data goes. It's irresponsible and willfully disobedient of the gov't of BC to allow my personal, protected data to be handled by a US contractor.
Say a programmer from another company creates a game where someone is seen burning an American flag. And if that's illegal, I could easily see that programmer getting arrested upon entering the US.
It's all relative to local laws. You can't judge a culture by your own rules.
Assuming the thing is patched and drivers are up to date:
ZoneAlarm (because I don't control our router!)
Norton Antivirus (as long as it's not McAfee)
WinRar (shareware zip util)
Firefox (superior browser)
Y'z Doc (like OSX's magnify bar)
Editplus (text editor - c&p columns!)
Irfanview (freeware image viewer - perfect)
LeechFTP (old but does the job)
EphPod (no bloat ipod software - sourceforge)
foobar2000 (with the remote plugin)
There are lots of others but ten will do.Oh ok, here's some more: NetPerSec, Alcohol 120%, CopyToDVD, Forte Agent, MS Office, Real Alternative, Quicktime Alternative, GAIM, VNC, Windows Grep, Beyond Compare, Treesize and Ad-aware.
Why would you have Bilbo played by someone that everyone recognizes as Frodo? Why not have Ian Holm play Bilbo again? He was made to look older in FotR and can be made to look younger. And wasn't Bilbo quite a bit older for his adventure than Frodo was for his?
Continue the tradition of having Ian Holm in it anyway. He was Frodo in the original BBC recordings and everyone KNOWS he's Bilbo now.
I agree. Binary posting in newsgroups hasn't changed at all compared to advances in other areas over the last ten years. First PARs and now this. It may not be well written but at least it's something.
Usenet needs a good kick in the pants if they want to stick around.
This is something the city of Vancouver would be interested in. They don't like people out on the streets at New Years or any other time. Spray some of the goo on the streets beforehand and you can force everyone into the high society pay events instead.
It's so sad to see New Years celebrations in downtown cores throughout the world yet Vancouver forces everyone to go to some crappy pay event.
Ok, enough off-topic ranting.
I remember reading a Vancouver business article a couple of years ago. It basically stated that Vancouver is a great location for businesses due to the fact that employees will take less salary to work in such a beautiful city. That's like saying that you should accept less money to live in LA, cause hey, it's LOS ANGELES. I suppose some might go for it but Vancouver isn't all that cheap as far as Canadian cities go. I certainly wouldn't take a pay cut because I get to live in beautiful Vancouver. I suppose it's more obvious to someone finishing university. The starting salaries aren't that hot in Vancouver so I'd certainly go somewhere else to make more money. Even Victoria would be better - same salary but lower cost of living.
I seem to remember stating that already. Specifically, the Ad up the free stuff all you want but techies will pay to avoid all the crap part.
Also, the $100/year wasn't what Google should charge, it was what I would be willing to pay for the service. That is, the value I derive from using their service would be worth $100/year to me. As with a normal business, they'd have to figure out what the market would bear - perhaps between your 10 and my 100.
If Google does eventually need to consider doing something drastic to make money, I certainly hope they come to us instead of ad companies. I would easily pay something like $100/year to use Google provided it was clear of ads and sponsored links. Even my employer would pony up the cash for it. It *is* that much better than other search engines. However, the 'donation' method sucks as a lot people just don't bother to pay up. It would have to be a premiere service. Ad up the free stuff all you want but techies will pay to avoid all the crap - that's why we started dealing with Google in the first place. I'd have no problem paying for that from Google and it's better than the alternative.
Didn't Heineken have something like this years ago? It was for palm pilots with a GPS. Only worked in Europe but this was back with the original Palm III. Told you where the nearest bars were. Always handy when you get kicked out of the one you're in.
Dr Ellis gave a talk here at school last night on this very topic. Very cool stuff. They're going to use the gravitational lensing to find out more about dark matter.

My personal fav. The best one-liners and such. I don't even need to go into detail to describe it.
Ding dong, the witch is dead.
Legend of the Dog-faced woman.
Two more feet and I can fit it in the fridge.
Suggestion noted.
Marge, I want to be alone with the sandwich.
You're not going to eat it, are you?
[pause] Yes.
Aww, how can I stay mad at you?
Thank you, doctor.
Oh, I'm not a doctor.
Homercles cares not for beans.
