You're a clueless fuck who didn't bother reading the thread. I'll entertain you with an answer nonetheless. If we switch to firefox from IE, we might lose NTLM authentication. We've decided that we're willing to take that loss in exchange for not having the inherent vulnerabilities in IE that assist the proliferation of malware, "lol" elsewhere you clueless moron.

And you're a complete moron who didn't bother to read my post.

I did not at any point contest that TCP is lossy, it's a hack of a stateful protocol with guaranteed delivery on top of a lossy unstateful protocol. There is considerable overhead to guaranteeing the packets as well as to making the connection stateful and carrying other features.

You obviously didn't even read enough to see that I Agreed with your last statement. I said none of this bullshit that you have pinned on me. I was profusely argueing against it. My point was that this speed test IS NOT TRYING TO ESTIMATE LOSSINESS IN THE PROTOCOL... ITS JUST A FUCKED UP CONVERSION OF BITS TO BYTES. Re-read my post with your brain turned on this time. Also, I suggest you RTF story.
Oh yeah, and paraphrasing the TCP RFC doesn't impress anyone.

They have no idea what they are talking about. Bytes/sec and Bits/sec do not have any special meaning beyond the number of bits or bytes that can be passed in a given second.
First, it's totally and completely moronic to strip the TCP Header off for one measurement but not for the other, it's not some sort of standard practice.
Second, the story says that instead of Bytes = 8*Bits, it was mroe like Bytes=13 or 14*Bits. That means that by their logic the BYTES were getting stuck as it was taking more bits to make a single byte, not the BITS.
Third, the speed test is probably hosted on a simple webserver with a moderately sized file, whose download is timed, because this makes sense, it's how everyone does it. With that being said, why and how would they see the TCP headers from that layer?
Fourth, in order to code a working speed test, you couldn't use packets small enough for a TCP header to matter it to matter, and I've never seen a speed test that tried. A standard TCP header is 120bits (15 Bytes) IIRC. Let's figure out how small it would have to be: (x*13)-(x*8)=15, solve for X and find that the packet would have to be 3, do the same for 14 and you'll find that it's between 2.5Bytes and 3Bytes of data in order for the difference to be the size of the TCP header. What kind of a speed tests measures accurately to anywhere near modern DSL line abilities (let's say 100,000Bytes/sec to 400,000Bytes/sec) with just 2.5Bytes? Even for just 100K/sec DSL that's a 400,000th of one second of bandwidth. That's like checking someone's hearbeat by touching their wrist for .00015 seconds!
Parent posts with this theory are merely flamebait and should be ignored.

True, but up till this point television broadcasters haven't cared. What do they care if they intefere with others broadcasters they're likely other companies. So long as the FCC doesn't tell them to cut it really doesn't have any negative impact. If they stuck to the original wording, which I'm not sure if they have or not, then there are going to be lots of problems. It seems by the first articles I read about this that the WiFi better not be interfering with the Television broadcasts but they didn't seem to concerned about the inverse. Does this mean that the Teleivision broadcasters will intentionally overdrive so they broadcast spread-spectrum and tromp all over the WiFi? It's not practical for the WiFi to use the kind of wattage that the Telivision broadcasters are able to do, at least not on the consumer (upload) side. If the FCC doesn't stick to this it could easily get washed away by the Television broadcasters and made useless.

Let's just hope they keep this on their radar and don't let it fall under their watch.

Why can't we just have story moderation? Editors would simply approve/disprove stories for voting, obvious crap would get dumped, anything mildly interesting would get posted to the moderation page. logged in users would then have the opportunity to look through all the stories submitted (minus the total crap) if they wanted. People who only want to see the best would simply choose to only view the top X% of stories of the last X# of hours. It's not really that different than moderation and it'd be easy to implement.
I'd imagine some editors might not like it because it would reduce their ego, but it would make for a much better slashdot.

Okay, to take my theory that we got trolled a little bit further for those who didn't bother to at least stop and think about it.

There are a couple of a problems with this kind of story:
1.) It's very sensational and funny. Something you woudln't expect to happen but 'did'.
2.) It's only being carried by ONE news site. Something this humorous and blunderous that has such far reaching claims of incompotency in our intelligence departments should have made bigger news. Why didn't it? The other news agencies did not or could not collaborate it. Either it's true and was successfully burried or it never happened.
3.) There are little to no details about why/how this made it to the top of the "terror threat matrix." One anonymous tip? Come on, as much as it's funny to think that our intelligence departments are stupid, do you really believe they're THAT stupid?
4.) Why did finding the name in a game have any bearing on whether this person was a threat? The FBI didn't drop their case against Cap'n Crunch when they found out he was just a cereal advertising cartoon character, did they?

I'd expect to be reading this in an e-mail titled "Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: Re: Game character plots terror attack against USA." Not on slashdot. We should be the experts on trolling, not the ones to feed it.
