Don't get me wrong, I love MySQL and I love open office, and I love Ubuntu, but if you seriously think that it's in a position to "beat" windows, you're kidding yourself. Do you have any idea what people are really doing with Microsoft products that simply can't be done on Linux.

I get it, microsoft is evil. You think their products are crap. Ok. I guess you could make an argument for various sectors of the user base, but c'mon. Try and run an enterprise without Microsoft products and let me know how that works out for you.

Exactly. When I can get panels on my roof for under $5k I'll do it for sure (I'll consider it for under $10k), but until them it's just not practical for me - especially considering Atlanta is a lot more cloudy than California is in my opinion. Solar power is awesome, but no company has found a way to scale the manufacturing up enough yet.

I'm with you. Too expensive an investment. I'm sure it's only going to be inside of 5 years that that number will approach the happy point of like 7-10G for what this man did.

However, I too live in Atlanta, and was surprised to find out that we get plenty of sun for solar power to be a viable option. I had a few companies quote my house and was told I could expect 80% efficiency given the amount of sun around here.

  8. Re:Wait to winter time when there is less sun to s on Switching To Solar Power – One Month Later · · Score: 3, Interesting

It sure will. Even in California or here in Florida you have fewer hours of sun in the winter. Since most people on solar are trying to live on far less energy than a human needs to be comfortable in order to utilize technology that simply isn't cost effective yet, I have no doubt they will be borrowing from the grid in winter.

Of course, if you'd RTFA, you'd know that the author mentioned that and figured his overall power bill to go from $4000 to roughly $1000 yearly.

You'd also have known that he states his power usage is higher than your typical family home due to the fact that both he and his wife work from home, he's got two teenage daughters, a pc lab, and pretty hdtv setups around his house. (thus the $4000/yr electric bill in the first place)

If you wanted to be a crotchety bitch, which clearly you did, you would have mentioned that it'll take him roughly 11-15 years to recoup his investment of $40,000 for the equipment and setup. That's what I'd go with.

    e. The restriction was quite extreme - Microsoft blocked several companies from even shipping a BeOS CD in the same box as a "BeOS PC" - I think Fujitsu actually shipped PC's for a little while with no OS, and a form that you could fill out and send them so that they would FedEx you a copy of BeOS. Of course, since they had to pay for Windows anyway, the BeOS PC was not only more complex (you had to order the install CD, then do the OS install) but cost more (since you had to pay for both Windows and BeOS).

To add a little more accuracy to your post, it wasn't that at all. It was the bootloader agreement. The deal microsoft made was to make sure that if they installed Windows, then they HAD to use the MS bootloader. Since the beos couldn't boot from the MS bootloader, or any other non MS os for that matter, MS made sure that windows was the only os that could be used. If it were not for the bootloader deal, then the BeOS could have been installed and you could have dual booted windows and the beos with the beos boot loader. That is my understanding of the situation as explained by JLG.

BeOS was dying at that time. All Microsoft's pressure did was put a stake in its heart.

You're wrong. BeOS was thriving at the time. In fact, when the bootloader thing became public, Compaq had made an agreement with BeOS to install BeOS on every machine they made along with windows. They were going to dual boot through the Beos bootloader, until microsoft brought to their (compaq's) attention that their agreement said that if Windows was installed, it HAD to be loaded with the MS bootloader, which couldn't boot any non-ms product. That's how they got hosed. They weren't dying, they were thriving. That pretty much stopped the train.

Kind of a foolish argument though. If you bought a car, you'd expect to maintain it and if you didn't it'd break and you'd risk death. I find it to be queer that nobody expects computers, or OSs, to require regular maintenance. Simple, complicated or whatever, it's a fact. I think the mistake is not clearly explaining to the masses that computers are complicated systems that require regular "check ups" that any user can perform themselves.

And seriously, the "real" world is full of the same stuff. If you're not carefull walking in a crowded place, you can get pickpocketed. If you're not carefull about what you view online, you can get pickpocketed. Again, I think the big mistake is trying to pretend that there can be a situation in the computer and online world where you don't need to be carefull and don't need to think about maintenence and system health. (The whole chaos theory deal and all...)
