It's a good idea, but I think it would be very hard to run a modern OS (Linux included) on a read-only filesystem. It would be worth a google, but I haven't read anything about it for a looong time. I DO run RO Linux on embedded controllers, on flash memory, but the central control/command PC is a standard, albeit hardened, Linux PC. Source: I work in nuclear research.
And even a RO OS can be hacked: they find the user/passwd, they do login, install their botnet, run it until you notice (I have uptimes of YEARS), and when you reboot OK it's gone, but you've still been hacked. Airgap is the only real way to go. Multiple successive (and different) external firewalls is an acceptable alternative.
Everything you say is true... but I have yet to figure out how you can do anything productive with SELinux. On the many control/command distros I run, it only causes heaps of strange and hard to diagnose problems, so I always disable it. I don't even know what that damn thing is supposed to DO...
I have to wonder how many of these random malware infections of industrial machinery could be avoided by having all control systems running Linux
My take on that is "all of them". I develop, install and maintain industrial control systems and I've refused to install anything on Windows since the early 2000. Most control/command or data acquisition software can be modified and recompiled for Linux (contact me if you want some quote!). Install a limited and ugly distro so users won't want to play games on it, tighten up the security, don't give the root password, don't put it on the 'Net without a double passworded firewall and you are good to go. Never been hacked (yet!).
At my (government) workplace, once a year, we send a fake email from a very fishy-sounding source, with a fishy-sounding executable to download to obtain fake internet postcards or stupid shit like that. People who fall for it are terminated, or if they are up the food chain (as is unfortunately often the case), they get a very strong put down by IT and their bosses, and their computers get monitored even more closely.
Yes. IIRC the Snowden reveletions had a detailed explanation on how to tap an undersea cable in a matter of hours, even if that seems incredible looking at the complexity of that thing. I just do not understand why those cable are not encrypted end to end, rendering any taping threat moot.
With some graph theory, shouldn't those (mostly) closed cycles of accounts be easy to individuate and cordon off ? Better than delete them, just hide their messages outside their own cycles, similar to -1 messages here on/.
What we need are fine-tuned options for access: allow, disallow and fake-it. Most apps check the permissions and ask again (or refuse to run) if you go and disallow some of them. We need a "fake-it" option that the app thinks is 'allow' and that provides fake GPS data, fake (blank or white noise) microphone data, fake network access (extremely long timeouts...), etc...
Maybe they should also chide the drivers for being too wasteful of gas if they happen to accelerate too fast
As someone who live on the main (straight) road of a small village right after a speed bump, believe me when I say I'd LOVE to see something like that. Speed limit is 20mph, but morons on their bike (and some souped up cars) systematically launch the throttle right at this spot and are 50mph over the limit by the time they exit the village. I've grown to hate bikers. Why are noise ordnances on bikers NEVER enforced ?!? There's only 140 biker crash a year on that mountain road; not enough for Darwin to have an effect yet IMHO.
Yeah, I don't see how that is 'news'. When I was a kid (a long time ago), my father always told me to do my homework without music, as it was distracting. Then as a university student I had a GF who would always listen to music while studying. I told her. She stopped and her grades improved significantly as a result and she thanked me for it.
Yes, there are situation where listening to music while working can be beneficial (*), but basically if you are listening, then part of your brain is on the music, and if you are not listening you might as well turn it off.
(*) Death metal while debugging to stay aggressive and angry at this fucking bug !
Maybe not. But then it shouldn't be a business, maybe ? Get it off the business and let the state handle it. It will save a huge amount of money for everyone in the long run. To say nothing of saving lives.
So recently there were several stories about shops stopping to accept cash send going plastic only. Guess it's working great to give them a monopoly on money
Exactly. Japan has been complaining of aging for decades, but they are actively anti-kid. No kindergarten anywhere, no pediatrists, no financial incentive (or even tax reduction), no time off work for new mothers (or fathers), etc... If they just did that they would have more kids around.
You can indeed contribute your own data to woeld wide weather forecast. Get a cheap/avg weather station at home, use the data with open source Wview or Veewx, ask for an official station number, send your data automatically. It will get used. I worked 15 years in climate research before branching to nuclear physics...
Same here, and I'll add that the main difference with US comics is that the latter are mostly about super heroes, while the former are mostly about anything else (fantasy, SF, drama, humor, family, thrillers, etc)... I find superhero comics horribly repetitive (and here's yet another fight between jacked-up tight-wearing guys with no link to actual physics)...
it's a lot faster leaving your hands on the keyboard than always having to grab a mouse
I do some tech support and it drives me crazy to see someone type a typo, say 'helllo', grab the mouse, place the cursor over the last 'l', click, move the hand back to press the Backspace key, then grab the mouse again to place the cursor after the 'o' and click... I see plenty of people do that.
Yes, it does eliminate people who really want to use their old headphones.
Old ?!? I have brand new noise cancelling headphones, with a jack, that work perfectly in public transportation or airplanes. And their single AAA battery lasts for more than 60 hours. Fuck those tiny things you keep loosing and that you need to recharge every 2 hours.
Wireless charging only If you've switched over to wireless charging already, this isn't a big deal. It does mean you're out of luck if you suddenly need to charge when traveling
Glad you figured that one out...
I can't think of the last time I used a data cable with a phone except when manually installing firmware (which was last week). There's really no reason to expect normal users to need a data cable.
You are right, it's so much faster to pop the SD card out, put it in your PC and copy all the music and movies you want. Right ? Right ?!?
In all the years I've owned a cell phone, I've only needed to move the SIM card once, and that was because the provider didn't send a new one with the new phone.
Travel much ? Go to a country without a roaming agreement and suddenly 1Mb of data costs 10$ and one SMS is 50. But a second SIM to go in the 2nd SIM slot is only 5$ for 2 weeks...
Battery, SD Card - This has been beaten to death with other phones already.
Which is why hell will freeze over before I get a phone without either. Did you know that you can get a cheap ass phone and a 128Gb, 256 or above SD card, reformat it under Linux in FAT32 instead of ExFAT (Windows refuses to format FAT32 above 32Gb) and it works fine under Android ?
Ultimately the question is what do they gain by removing all this stuff.
You are correct on this. If it's waterproof to 100m and can be dropped while BASE jumping, maybe it could be interesting, otherwise, get off my lawn.
Unfortunately no. They built expensive roaming agreements for Europe first, then the EU forced all carriers to have cheap roaming (no more 100euros for 2 minutes of background internet). Now they are extending to other countries out of Europe. So all carriers are actually more convenient to use in foreign countries because they can roam with competing networks. In order to limit what you want, and since you don't even have to be resident to buy a SIM, there's a time limit on how many days of roaming you can do. Last I checked it was 35 days per year, but I've gone over that limit without incurring additional costs.
I travel a lot in Europe and I used to have various contracts in various countries, now I just have one and it works way better and cheaper. Thank the EU for that!
What the fuck are you replying to ?!? Maybe your message makes sense in a parallel universe, but not in this conversation.

Do not disable SELinux.

panic attacks in the presence of WiFi routers are all real things
Well, at work we fixed that with a bit of masking tape on the routers' LEDs. Can't get any more real than that !
In its defence it was very low budget. And I've seen much worse.

That's an interesting take on the subject. Then I guess I've never liked superhero comics because I've never liked the bible !!!

Posting to cancel an erroneous moderation. I hate clicky touchpads...

Right now, he's acting like a child in the terrible twos that doesn't get the toy he wants and holds his breath 'til he gets what he wants.
It's more like he's holding other people's breath 'til he gets what he wants...
"Floss had never been researched by the committees that review science". In other words it's never been studied, and it's mostly bullshit, unlike other dental cares like brushing or adding fluorine to water.
I see a lot of complaints
Which are entirely reasonable.

Not subsidized. It works through roaming agreements.
