AppleScript? Can you write a web server in applescript?! I can with bash. Yes perl does happen to float my boat. It also happens to be a language the purpose is to be portable. If you can tell me when repartitioning your hard drive on windows was possible without rebooting I'd love to know so I can try.
    You are wrong..

ALL of the powerful tools I do have are more powerful under unix and that's why I use it. I'm not linux zealot. I use a mixture of solaris/linux/freebsd and have for a while now. Why? Because all the things you've mentioned might be ported but they are only as powerful as the OS they operate on top. You also seem to neglect that all of the commands/programs you do mention were invented on some type of unix (minus applescript which isn't just as or more powerful at all).

Don't assume, just because a program was ported its just as powerful. Especially since they run on two different OS's.

I agree; a GUI is alot more efficient..However opening, copying and deleting a large number of files is not a complex operation. It's just easier with a GUI. You can't compare chalk and cheese, it's like those kids that buy a bmw 3 series and rip off the 325i and put a M3 sign there.. When a real M3 pulls to the line; any fool can tell the difference.

They also figured that if people could develop for it freely gaming companies would see the platform as perfect for developing games, advertisements in magazines (just like cpu) etc etc.

That's what Indrema was trying to do.. and they wouldn't have lost a dime on machines as cpu prices continue to plummet and they'd gain a large audience.

I wanted to write a game for Indrema (because I wouldn't have to pay for any stupid licenses); Unlike Microsoft, Sony, Dreamcast etc. I won't buy an XBOX specifically because I'm not gonna pay licensing fees to write a game, samething for all the others.

You people need to learn to stop saying NAPSTER obtained stuff. None of the files you obtain using Napster software is from Napster. It's from your friend across the street. Fact remains here that Napster is just the middle man. Connecting person to person. The RIAA doesn't understand that and because of that what they are doing is fighting the people, not Napster. I wonder what 57 million people (voting or not, imagine for a second that even half of those people are registered voters) can do to the RIAA's bank account. The RIAA instead of trying to look at its current business plans and listen to the people, chose to fight them. For that it is inevitable (because everytime someones loads up napster they are saying that the RIAA's current model is poor whether they know it or not) that the RIAA will die off. They haven't won any fight; all they did was postpone and probably even make the movement stronger.

My take on it is that they should of made a deal with Napster because out of those 57 million users not all of them wish to steal. Infact most of them don't see it as stealing, many of them would love to pay 10 bucks a month to download whatever the hell they want. It's more convient, easier and they get only the stuff they want to hear. That's what all this boils down to. People don't want to go out and buy CD's anymore and the RIAA just doesn't get that. It's just not college kids using Napster. It's everyone.. People in general, Old, young etc. That in itself says something.

I'm not against the RIAA or against Napster or for any of them. I just see it as survival of the fittest. RIAA vs NAPSTER is how I see it. The only outcome I can logically come up with is above. RIAA has just sealed its fate.

    Flame if need be.

  18. How much inroad will sun make? on Want a Sparc Workstation for $995? · · Score: 1

I mean looking at the machine its nice and looks pretty but the simple matter is that Sun is still charging for Forte C++ personal edition which means if I don't buy forte c++ I can't compile a native solaris kernel for the box. Which in my opinion defeats the whole purpose. Not only that but the only thing I would really want outta the box is the processor (ultrasparc iie 500mhz yummm). Nothing else is really revolutionary about the box.

So how exactly does sun plan to hit the desktop? Sure looks like a fun machine to play with but I'm not sure if I'll give up my 800mhz machine running Linux for something that will do the samething except for the fact that its on a 64bit arch. Maybe it'll be good for research purposes but then again researchers already have the higher quality sun machines. So who exactly is sun targetting these machines to?

IMHO I believe its a little too late for Sun to try and jump in the desktop market. They should of started to provide low end machines like these maybe 1-2 years ago, with kernel source; and even if I had to pay for Forte C++ I would of probably bought one.

I have no need for it now. However it's the thought that counts. Thanks Sun, we will see how you fair in the battle arena now.
