    If you've got enough money to fight, you fight. As a taxpayer I don't want Microsoft to continue its monopoly PERIOD. Whether its decaying or not is a totally different subject. The point is, that right now Microsoft still is practicing monopolisticly. It's quiet'd down a bit; however like most cancers you have to kill it.. Not shrink it. If that means battling to the death then so be it. If anything Microsoft needs to be hit with punitive damages to reap what they've taking from the market to begin with.

    If it wasn't for opensource what would you be using? Thought so.

    Do you:

    A. Stay on board and help the captain till the ship sinks.

    B. Plug in your laptop, come on slashdot and troll to death (literally).

    C. Get off the goddamned boat, get a helicopter and get your 5 best mates off a sinking ship and then worry about others on the ship if need be.

    D. Get naked and start singing kumbayah.

    It's pretty clear to me.. The obvious answer is first you do C and then proceed to D. Get out first. Help your mates second. Then sing naked. Or whatever it is you do to celebrate.

    ..It'd have a major effect on the Linux Market. Effectively; they'd be the link that Linux has always needed. "Support". My recommendation is that everyone send them the type of system setup they have for laptop's and desktops. That's a whole shit load of work for them not only that but a central repository on the web of all equipment that works with linux would rock. For instance with all the setups they receive or can imagine. They can throw that into a database and people could easily select what type of sound card that they want, with what type of video card knowing that it will work. Not only that but then you'd have companies like Loki not focusing so much on support for their games but actually writing games. This has huge possibilities; I'd be willing to help as well!

    Even though this hasn't been said fully I think at least this is how it should go. No other operating system I can think of has this type of support. They'd monopolize this niche very quickly. Hrmmm maybe I should steal the idea and run with it =)

    I have the same machine sitting right here on my desk and just bought another scsi 10k drive and a 256mb mezzanine card. Cost about 2300.. Sucks.. however they did have a 10% discount on these items at the time of purchase.

    .. as an investor to take the truth and know what the company is going to do about it. Basically if I were a mac investor I would be glad to hear steve jobs say they fucked up and plan to fix it. Because if he doesn't, in the way I look at it; I'll be saying they fucked up AND that the CEO is a son of a bitch for trying to sugar coat it.

    So he said a couple of expletives. I'd rather that than the fucking shpeel about how they screwed up and what the future holds in a candy wrapper. Steve Jobs in essence has probably done the best thing he could have ever done. He's showing that he has balls and is not afraid to say when fuck ups occur. The odd thing is that I've never ever liked Mac's but their recent boxes have got my mouth watering; from now on I'll keep an eye out for Apple. It sounds like shit will be going uphill soon.

    When you are suing someone you usually want to be specific about what you are suing them for. Any good lawyer knows that. You research, study and get all the dirt on something before you sue.

    They haven't done their homework and thats why people are pissed that they are associating totally two different things (company/kernel). This shouldn't be done; however I don't think we'll hear much from Linus Torvalds on the topic. Worst comes to worst the matter will be cleared up in court. Whether it be with a counter suit from Linux claiming that the software/kernel are too different things and that as a result an estimated "number here" was loss.

    That's what happens when you are greedy and don't know what you are talking about.

    I have the a StarTac w/clip on organizer. Its the same thing as the timeport basically except the timeport is gray/grey. It should work no problems

    Not for them; For the people that use interbase and now have to be subjected to being backdoored. If they were a bit more political about the whole thing expressing their apology and they an overall impression of being happy it was found I wouldn't care that much. However; as we can see from the way that they handled the whole situation that I specifically won't be using much of any Borland Products ever again; It'd be my wish that everyone else who can; does.

    The reason why they won't allow things like this in a hospital is because of strict rules regarding such items. For instance have you ever noticed that when you go into a hospital they ask you to turn off cell phones, beepers, any tiny gadgets etc? Its for the well being of the patient its also so that none of their equipment malfunctions while performing operations. Hospitals are a sensitive area because when the EKG starts flat lining but the person is still alive and it was all because of your cell phone, it'd have a very adverse affect on the hospital itself and the dead patients which they could charge you with homicide for; knowing or not.

    Yes it would be nice to have things and organizers like these in HMO's and other places but not in a hospital. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if you knew that a loved one died because some person had to know when his/her next meeting was going to be.

    I feel that the amount of miniorities in Microsoft compared to "white anglo saxon males" is because simply; there aren't that many minority techies. Myself being (afro-american) I haven't really found any racism in the tech industry. I'm 20, and am the system administrator for a couple big name web sites but I've been using Unix ,Solaris, Linux (since 1.2.13 Dec 94). So for me maybe I haven't noticed it as much but alot of my "Afro-American" friends aren't really into computers; why? Some don't own one and the ones that do aren't really into "techie" realms. Some do web design and others just chat. I think that the void will change as the industry starts to even out.

    As a black male I think the lawsuit is for money and thats about it. If these people really felt as if there was a glass ceiling at Microsoft this suit would of came about long before now. However I don't know their individual situations and it would be stupid of me to say that it isn't possible.

    If it were me though I'd probably sue, to get some extra money so I can buy a lambhorghini diablo 6. More power to them, everyones suing Microsoft anyway why not its own employees? =)

    As for slashdot; I hope someone does something and does something fast. It is honestly going down the tubes. I'd recommend the powers at be stop catering to non-shalant "jump on the bandwagon" users and cater to the audience that has been here and hopefully will continue to read and submit stories to slashdot; Amen.

    1. I can read most of the important flanks as they go by. I don't know why you cant and I run linux on a p3-800.

    2. You obviously never add hardware or touch your computer. What is it? A dell?

    3. Its a kernel patch; fine I never objected to that. I objected to it being put into the kernel.

    4. It's nice to be able to use dmesg when your kernel hasn't paniced; or for that matter your /dev/hda parition has fucked up inodes, Right? If you could show me some code on how you did that I'd appreciate it. Thanks; infact just submit it as a patch.

    1. Write your own goddamn driver if you want it that bad or complain to the hardware vendor don't fucking give me that drivel about you want hardware support.

    2. You want a commercial package to run under Linux but its not a native port to linux? Write the goddamn authors of the package; create one yourself or use VMWARE.

    3. Tech support for your friends? They use windows what kind of tech support are you talking about?

    Linux is more useable than windows but usability without stability is stupidty.

    I must me bored?; No, I must want to know whats going on with my system. Granted I don't look at the messages everyday but its good to see if I add new hardware or a new chip or a new dimm that it is infact working.

    The "warning" or "failure" doesn't say kernel panic or it doesn't tell me how much ram I have, does it, no.. good I didn't think so. I'd have to switch consoles to see my boot messages, waste of time, waste of space, plain ole waste its just not needed.

    How about before you address anyone else on slashdot about linux you uninstall win4lin and install linux. Maybe then you won't have to show sad faces about not having a patch yet :(

    1. Your mother should NOT be running linux. How many mom's can barely run windows?!

    2. Interoperability has always been an issue, WILL always be an issue with Microsoft. Not because they don't want to cooperate but its called Market Share.. It's business not about interoperability.

    3. Open Source doesn't need Linux to become the "preferred methodology"; It needs coders and people willing to develop open source for Windows instead of Linux.

    4. Better acceptance on the desktop leads to better acceptance in the boardroom? Don't think so, thats not how it works. It works more like, "What can get the job done; who can be accounted for if anything breaks." With Linux thats not how it is so no matter how many desktops run it if they can't find a redhat or sun to blame it won't be their server solution.

    5. I could go on for hours as to why your reasons have little to nothing to do with Linux and/or why your reasons are faulty. Especially the mother one; but you get the point.

    1. Since when did linux cater to the desktop?

    2. If you want your computer as an appliance only THEN buy an I-opener it'll do the job just fine.

    3. If you are sick of using windows why do you want linux to look and act like windows?

    4. Embedded systems don't need to show the boot messages. Infact most embedded systems that use linux don't show the messages; however you don't know what you're talking about, so I'd expect that from you.

    5. If an engineer wants a pretty package; so be it. Don't add that shit to the kernel though. Linux worked fine without it before. And use windows it was made for that type of stuff

    6. If the messages scroll by too fast thats a good sign. I want to know when I have a kernel panic and I would also like to know how the hardware is interepted under linux if I've added new hardware (i/os, interrupts etc). When the messages stop.. So do I; to figure out the problem.

    7. Linux is not for a dumb user. Unix is not for a dumb user. Freebsd/Openbsd and Solaris is not for a dumb user. ITS not intended to be for a dumb user. Its inteded for people that want power from their systems. So why would you dumb down linux for the dumb user? All in name of the desktop? (shudder)

    Look at the history of what Unix and Unix like systems have been used for, then speak intelligently.

    No way. Boot messages are the way to go.

I hope that we in the linux community that want to use Linux for whatever we want don't have to now cater to these "jump on the bandwagon" zealots. The ones that actually think that putting this into the kernel is a good idea. It's not;

    Seriously, this is pretty dumb. Why does everyone want linux to "gain a substantial foothold on the desktop". If the majority of users don't care about the damned messages then whats the problem? I don't see any; if they don't like it then they don't have to use it. However people on here recommending adding more bloat to the kernel for a pretty startup screen need to think for a second.

    1. If you plan on seeing that bootup splash screen alot then stability is not focus for you.
    2. If stability is not your focus then don't use linux.
    3. If you want pretty boot splash screens instead of dire information of whats inside your computer and how its operating with linux; then you're a fool. (This is why I don't tolerate macs and this is also why I always press ESC when starting a windows computer. To make sure that nothings going wrong)

    I'd really pay to see some of your faces when you compile that new kernel and all you get is a stupid splash screen instead of making sure everything is working. Then again I've come to the conclusion that most of you don't compile kernels or work with enough hardware to know that you NEED those messages on startup for a machine that you don't know or for new hardware that you added.

    This is not surprising to me. Blizzard makes very good multiplayer games at least they are king of the hill; for now. However this same thing took place with Starcraft. People cheating, and showing the whole map while playing etc. I stopped playing starcraft because of it. I haven't bought a Bizzard game since. Not because I don't like diablo 2 but the games reach a peak and then the hacks and cheats don't make the game worth playing anymore. Why would I waste my money to have my character ripped of all glory to a mere peasant?

    Blizzard needs to do something, INFACT because of this they should send everyone that has a registered copy of Diablo 2 some form of coupon or something to solace the people that have spent hours building up characters.

    If Starcraft wasn't so old I'd demand my money back if I knew that I was going to play and that I'd be cheated against. It's not fair, it's no longer fun to play and I sincerely hope that Blizzard plans to do something about it. If they don't this will not be the last time we hear about this.

    I mean; I'm 20, 5 yrs off of yah and I system admin for well respected companies. Right now i'd feel pretty much at ease job security wise but I haven't finished college yet (associates). I also am a "weekend warrior" and do military intelligence crap once a month. My question to you is how did you get involved with computers? For me I fit all the geek attributes of being A-SOCIAL etc etc and i'm a minority so "geekness" crosses all boundaries. I went through the bbs'n, 2600 meeting (the plaza in nyc ), windows sucks, OS/2 rocks, hrmm whats this Linux thing phase. After I installed slackware (at kernel version 1.2.13) I knew that I loved unix. Then I had to get my hands on every unix like system as Digital Unix was far from my grasp. In any event, i'm sure its been alot different for you and I'd love to hear how you started your trek. I thank a computer programmer from IBM back in Dec 94 for showing me linux. I don't know where I would be had it not been for that. SO what about you?
