  1. Re:for me, it's the software. (Re:politics) on A Quick Look At Mac-On-Linux · · Score: 1

Well, to my thinking here is the deal. Keep in mind I am NOT a Linux user, and I ask that any inaccuracies be responded to in a reply. I'm always looking to learn. Setup one (Mac-on-Linux Scenario): CLI apps (linux); Xwindows/Gnome/KDE (XFree86); Mac OS Classic (Mac-on-Linux); Mac OS Carbon [no X benefits] (Mac-on-Linux). That's 4 quick categories. I'll bump it to 5, as I assume Linux likely has good Java support. Worst case, you can get minimal Java through the Mac OS via M-o-L. Setup two: (OS X Scenario): CLI apps (BSD); Xwindows/Gnome/KDE (XFree86); Mac OS Classic (Classic Compatibility Layer); Mac OS Carbon [full X benefits] (OS X Native); Mac OS Cocoa (OS X Native); Java 2 (OS X Native - no VM needed); Windows in it's many evil forms (Virtual PC). Total: 7. So again, what is the use of M-o-L in this post OS X world? Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure people use it, but shouldn't the developers just iron it down to a final, rock-solid release, and go on to other projects? I left WINE out of both, as I believe it is not PPC-able at this point. Also, as I said, I am no expert here, so I welcome, nay, request, corrections.

  2. Excerpt from appleturns.com on Apple Cancels Apple Expo 2001 · · Score: 1
From monday's issue of As the Apple Turns:

First, there's the face-value geopolitical take on things. Provided you can get past the standard "if we let them interrupt business as usual, then the terrorists win" rhetoric, you shouldn't be surprised if Steve is primarily concerned for the safety of the conferencegoers-- not to mention his own skin. Granted, last week's attack was on U.S. soil, not in Paris, but in light of brewing military retaliation, we wouldn't be a bit surprised if our government has told Apple that Paris might not be the safest place for a large and highly-visible American corporation to be next week. If the U.S. decides to flex its military muscles and innocent people therefore turn into "collateral damage," then a U.S. corporation abroad might suddenly find itself dangerously unpopular. Heck, maybe the French government even suggested that the show be cancelled, fearing trouble following a U.S. company onto foreign soil. Who knows? This is all just speculation, and all we can say for certain is that if Apple didn't have safety concerns, it would need to lay of the Reality Distortion just a little.

Then there's the logistical interpretation. Face it: air travel is a big stinking mess right now, and it's not likely to be much better next week. Steve may have his own jet, but we're guessing it won't seat a full conference staff, and traveling by commercial airline next week will be sketchy at best. And besides moving people, what about moving freight? From last Tuesday until this morning, your best bet for getting things from Point A to Point B was a wormhole in the space-time continuum or by strapping them to your back and walking. Even now, getting them there by air is still a little iffy-- better than last week, and better still next week, but iffy nonetheless. It's entirely likely that Apple just wanted to avoid the higgledy-piggledy altogether.

  7. NEVER promised a free download. on MacOS X Upgrade Not Free Anymore? · · Score: 1

In fact, in the keynote, Steve NEVER ONCE even mentioned downloading 10.1. He said, and the slide below him showed:

    Mac OS 10.1 - FREE*
    ($20 shipping and handling)

Everyone just assumed it would be free for download, as that is the Apple standard, but as this is a three CD set (X 10.1, 9.2.1, updated Developer Tools CD), with a megabyte count well into the hundreds, I am not surprised that it is not for download, and for three discs and likely a manual or two, twenty bucks ain't all that out of line.

(And yes, I know other *nix distros are often available for d-load, but, and I am just speculating here, it may be that some things need to be installed from a different CD. Perhaps the non-Darwin/BSD portions? And keep in mind Mac users are less likely to have cd-burning capabilities.)

Ah, but it is not the approval date that matters here. It is the FILING date, which, considering red tape, was likely several months earlier. It's the same as the 'patent pending' deal, I believe.
