  4. patent on NASA Plan to Read Brainwaves at Airports · · Score: 1

except no mind reading involved here. there actually was a patent to the effect of remotely reading eeg. it consisted of 2 parts: part1 sent out 2 signals at different (high) frequencies, the signals were *modulated* by ur brain as they passed, then picked up on the otherside. by interpreting the interference patterns, they were able to read your brain waves.

on the other side...they could figure out exactly what signals to send in order for the modulate signals to be what THEY wanted, so it would not only monitor, but given sufficient amplitude, CONTROL!!

they were only able to read alpha waves and a few beta, but it would be interesting to get some gamma readings (and control them). gamma are the readings which are supposedly indicitive of your senses. so, see something or hear something, and it would show up on gamma frequency (30-40 hz) waves. makes sense why we can only distinguish 30-40hz in video.

since the representative said that he thinks all users want is ease of use "out of the box" and not flexibility, then porting, say, microsoft office to linux would make some people happy, and at the same time not harm microsoft, because linux is supposedly NOT easy to use out of the box.

obviously, i disagree. i have had enough fun with windows video drivers that don't work causing the screen to be black, but since EVERYTHING is gui, i can't do anything about it, which means i need to reinstall. can i switch back to vga? NO. but that is besides the point. frankly, linux comes with far more out of the box than windows ever will. but that is besides the point.

if microsoft is bold enough to say that their operating system is easier to use, and then appear at linuxworld, i think they should at least be bold enough to port some software (as a software vendor not, operating system creator) to prove their point. it seems they are kissing up to linux geeks to pull some PR move or some other unpredictable stunt.

...a good software engineer is STILL hard to find. now, many idiots have gotten BS comp sci. degrees, went to work doing DB or business app work, then got layed off after the .bomb, and now complain. real software engineers who not only know what they are doing but are able to do something competent and long standing exist in very small numbers.

why, you ask? because good surgeons are hard to find compared to nurses. for some reasons, the corporate bastards at the top of the stairs, tightening their already painful money belts, sit in their corporate chairs, smoking their coporate cigars, screwing their corporate secretaries confuse fresh i-want-lots-of-money IT graduates as real engineers. they put them behind large projects or developing some useless web app they themselves recommended, and then eventually the CTO complains.

a lot of software cost is due to this. another reason for large software costs is that it IS actually worth it sometimes. not for office apps, but for serious products esp development tools, if you examine the amount of money it costs to develop something with it as opposed to without it, you will see that it IS worth the money. many CEOs think that ms office is one of these products. that is where they are wrong. they make decisions (both in employment and software) that simply is unnecessary and largely due to propaganda.

after some time, the myths about IT will fade and we will have left are the hardcore techies doing their job, not asking for enormous paychecks and lots of stock options and bonuses. for now, however, let's lay off all the managers...we don't people to tell us how to spend our money, esp. since it is NOT theirs.

sphinx and festival? dear lord, these have been around for a while, i use both daily. festival used with the mbrola phoneme databases are actually pretty decent, even in multiple languages. sphinx is speech recognition, which is obviously more complicated, so naturally it doesn't work quite as well. it is actually tailored very well for this sort of thing, because it is built around recognizing phrases, which is exactly what they need since they have a huge lookup table. so, if anything in the table is recognized, it makes things that much easier. i don't really see why carnegie mellong deserves so much credit for this? i could have done the EXACT same thing. in fact, i even have MORE. i have a natural language processor, known by some as CHAT BOTS, although i beg to differ, because mine is not meant to fool anyone, instead i am actually trying to teach it to say something intelligible (not from a database of phrases)..with mixed results.

a lookup table for a translator + sphinx + festival is not exactly worthy of an overblown article. sorry, that's just it. no aim to flaim.
