  1. Re:Apple will buy Xplay on iPod on Windows · · Score: 1

The better solution for Apple would be to partner with somebody like XPlay and bundle the software with the new iPods (10GB) when they are released. This way they wouldn't have to go through the hassle of acquiring the company. And it would get the Windows software into the hands of the average PC consumer who wouldn't know how to find the XPlay software if it wasn't bundled.

  2. Re:Doesn't update iPod playlists? on iPod on Windows · · Score: 1

I don't know what you use to play your music, but I don't think I could survive without playlists.

I have an empeg MP3 car player which holds 60GB worth of music. If I didn't organize this into playlists, it would be impossible for me to find the music I wanted to listen to. So, I create playlists based on artist, album, genre, etc. Then, depending on what mood I'm in, I can select the proper playlist. A particular song on the drive might exist in multiple playlists.

This becomes even more useful with my Rio Receiver, which allows me to play music off my HD in a similar fashion as the empeg. Again, I can select the different playlists (artist, album, genre, etc) and go, without having to build a custom playlist every time I want to listen to a bunch of songs.

  7. Re:too late for napster on Napster Finally Gets a Break · · Score: 1

What cracks me up is that the RIAA thinks that if they introduce their subscription services with their own secure file formats, that MP3 will magically disappear.

They don't seem to understand that the cat is out of the bag and there's nothing they can do about it. Everybody and their mother has an MP3 decoder on their computer. It'll take a complete revamp of the entire industry to try to undo this. That would include getting rid of the CD format completely. Of course, as it has been proven numerous times, whatever they come up with will be cracked by somebody within the first few months.

  8. It doesn't matter on Napster Finally Gets a Break · · Score: 1

It doesn't matter if the judge rules in Napster's favor, since Napster is trying to do exactly what the labels are doing with MusicNet and PressPlay anyways. Who cares if Napster lives or dies if we'll just end up with another sucky music subscription service.

What I'm worried about is the decision earlier this week about the fees webcasters will pay for streaming online music (See earlier article). The fees ended up being much higher than the webcasters wanted (and much lower than the RIAA wanted). What this means for us is that all the decent online radio services, like Live365, will go out of business because they won't be able to afford the licensing fees, which will be on top of the already high bandwidth fees. So, we'll get stuck with the large music companies owning the digital music space, just like they do the current retail CD business.

What I want to know is why we haven't seen Family Guy on DVD here in the U.S.? The U.K. has a Season 1 DVD, as well as a Futurama DVD. They even have an announcement for the Simpsons, Season 2 DVD.

Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a region-free DVD player.

That's really interesting...the same thing happened to me. Dropped it off the treadmill I was running on. After that, it would only read one or two of my discs. Almost all of them would come up "NO DISC". I had the thing for over 6 months. I contacted SonicBlue on the matter and they said to try taking it to where I bought it first, and if they couldn't help me, then SonicBlue would assign me a RMA number for returning it.

So, I went down to Fry's electronics, showed them my receipt as well as the original packaging. They said to go get a new one off the shelf and they'd swap it. I must say, at least Fry's is good for something. I've heard some great stories about them taking returns, no questions asked.

By the way, here's a great thing to do to keep from dropping it again. My work ordered tons of VA Linux servers, and they came with Velcro cable ties. I took a bunch home, ran two of them through the belt loop of the Rio Volt, and then I strap the Volt to the treadmill handle. No way it's falling off then. If one velcro fails, I have redundancy. :-)

  11. Rio Volt buffer and working out on Where are the non-SDMI MP3 Players? · · Score: 1
I too own a Rio Volt and love it! I use it when I go to the gym and I never really have a problem. But, I spend most of my time on machines and weights. I don't do running (bothers my knees).

I have to admit, if you enjoy working on the treadmill or something else that's active, don't get the Rio Volt then. It works great when I do brisk walking on the treadmill. But, as soon as I start to run, the Rio Volt will get one good jolt, then start skipping like crazy. Once it starts, you have to pretty much get the thing to a perfect standstill before it can recover.

So, if you're really active, go for something like the Nike PSA. But, otherwise, definitely get a Rio Volt.

Oh, and get the new one (250, I think?) that has the FM player and the ability to use the remote with the built-in LCD.

  12. Re:MP3 for your car on SonicBlue Rio Digital Audio Receiver · · Score: 1
Forget the Phatnoise...go for the RioCar.

When I first heard of the Phatnoise, I couldn't wait for it to come out. But I did. I waited, and waited, and waited. I have a very popular Pioneer headunit, but they still don't support it, and probably won't for a while. Also, I realized that due to CD Changer limitations, I would only be able to create 99 playlists. That seems like a lot, but I have more than 99 CDs. Furthermore, my headunit doesn't do the best text scrolling, so I wouldn't be able to have the full ID3 tag info.

With the RioCar, however, I can see Artist, Album, song title...even year. Plus the menu interface COMPLETELY blows away the Phatnoise box. And now that the RioCar has been discontinued, the price for the 10GB dropped to $699. That's cheaper than the Phatnoise. Oh, and don't think that since it's discontinued that you shouldn't buy it. There's a huge underground community that is continuing software development.

Anyways, you should definitely check it out before deciding on the Phatbox.

And just to help make up your mind, I highly recommend checking out the demo movie here.

  14. Rio Car (was Empeg) on Geek Gift Ideas 2001 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Definitely the Rio Car. It's by far the best car MP3 player you can get. And since it was recently discontinued, they dropped the price dramatically on the player. You can now get a 10GB version for only $699. Compare that to the $1499 for a 6GB when it first came out. What's great about the product is that even though it's discontinued, the software is open source, so people are continuing to update and hack the software.
