And a default function with the ability to execute SHELL COMMANDS, or write to the registry among other things.. Turning any sql injection vulnerability into a full system compromise.
Well, you could run the opensource darwin kernel on the intel box, not quite OSX but it's the closest you can currently get.. You could also compare netbsd/darwin/linux between x86 and ppc systems to get some idea of the performance differences between the 2 architectures.
Recompiling the kernel to remove unnecessary features/drivers and enable support for modern processor features seems very intuitive to me. Removing as many unnecessary features as possible and runing it as closely as possible to the host system is a basic step when configuring a system, the difference is linux lets you take the tuning several steps furthur.
And your second coment depends on the organisation, a lot of strongly-microsoft shops work the way you describe, and only use unix for jobs where windows can't handle the task at hand (even microsoft run a lot of their backend stuff on solaris and as/400 systems for instance). While many other companies use unix for most backend tasks while leaving windows strictly for end user interaction.
The control panel in our fridge/freezer caught fire just over a year ago... And some older fridges gradually leak their coolant over time which can be poisonous to people nearby, and will gradually reduce the effectiveness of the device..
That totally depends on the distribution, distributions such as debian or gentoo will let you install an app and all it's dependencies with a single command.
Your point would be valid, had MS never done anything like this before.. But they have and it's been proven in court.. Therefore i'm just making assumptions based on established past form, these are not baseless accusations but are based on established fact and the likelihood that someone who has previously committed an illegal act will do it again. The police work the same way too, a previous conviction for a crime, especially a related one, will be counted against you if your suspected of another.
There was also a predecessor chip to the HME called the Big Mac.. so it's not coincidence that they were using mcdonalds names for their products, i'm just surprised they didnt get sued.
Because apache mysql and php are competing with microsoft products, it wouldn't be the first time that ms os's have hindered the performance or functionality of competing products... They did it with DR-DOS, Novell, wordperfect, netscape etc
The same could be said for the alpha, with the exception of big-endian addressing.. and alpha always beat ppc, and isn't far behind even today despite having seen no major revisions since 1997
I thought x86 and opteron lacked security features used by the openvms os, vax and alpha were designed to run openvms and hp/compaq had enough sway over itanic to get such features implemented there too..
A lot of sites use them, including apple, ebay, paypal etc.. The annoying thing is, there is no www.2o7.net, so i can't go there to see their privacy problem and determine what information they will be storing and why.. Consequently i have blocked all their sites, their iprange is blocked in my firewall and their dns servers are blocked from my dns cache.

I've used software raid for a root partition under linux before, the software raid is partition based so i create 2 partitions for raid, and an additional smaller "boot" partition, the kernel is loaded from the boot partition, detects the arrays and continues booting... I assume other os's could work in much the same way.. The data for how the raid is setup is stored in a particular block at the start of each partition, so you can even move the disks into different orders and they will continue working, you dont need to have already booted the os and load a configuration file.. It's possible that the firmware of a system could load this same information, or store it in an eeprom setting (better to load from a disk block, incase the motherboard fries and you have to move the disks to another box) and i believe hardware raid arrays work in this same way too.
But if microsoft manage to make the web more dependant on ie, so that competing browsers are no longer a threat to their dominance, you will see their "innovation" stop, just like it did before.
Firefox has never installed XPI's automatically.. aside from that, xpi's are written in a scripting language and you can easily read the code if you are suspicious, activex controls are binary and therefore much harder to investigate.. Either way, you should not download such things from sites you don't trust
Maybe... But if a service is so easy to take down then that's an issue that should be fixed, you can't put such a flakey service onto the internet for sure.
Hmm, firewall your network so that the quark clients cant detect each other? And then, pirate their stuff as punishment for forcing such horrendous/fascist licensing schemes on you, or better yet switch to an opensource alternative.
Isn't retina scanner a windows app? whereas nessus is a unix app, i do all my testing from unix machines so this isn't appropriate.. Also, i frequently encounter bugs in scanning tools and would like to be able to fix them myself or atleast understand what the problem is.. Aside from that, last time we tested retina it wasn't very good atall and was especially bad at detecting known vulns in unix machines, it was more windows oriented.
There is a single commercial app that not only costs us a LOT of money, but is the single reason i keep a copy of windows installed on vmware.. This is webinspect, from spi dynamics.. An incredibly buggy app, also very bloated, slow, and very prone to false positives. Unfortunately, there is no opensource equivalent. I would very much like to get rid of this huge festering pile of crap, the developers of which tell me i must configure IE as the default browser in order to use the product (outrageous, how can a security professional be seen to be using the most insecure browser?) I have a list of complaints about this program and it's developers a mile long, and when i submitted these complaints to the developers i was just brushed off, as if bugs are normal and i should just live with poorly written buggy crap.. Anyway, i would love to use an opensource equivalent application for this, all it really does is trawl a website looking for flaws in the code, sql injection, cross site scripting, command injection etc. If anyone is familiar with a project to write such an app, i would be very interested in participating..
And companies building new houses should (and do) provide better security mechanisms by default with the houses, car companies should (and do) provide better security features by default with new cars, microsoft should (but dont) provide better security features by default with new software. Other software has never had the huge holes ripped in it like microsoft's has, and it's not all about market share... Apache has twice the marketshare of iis, and yet has had far less serious holes, and netscape once had the dominant share of the browser market and yet had far fewer holes than ie has.
Actually, my biggest gripe is when it searches mailing list archives, where the archives have a link to the next and previous messages and the search engine detects the link, so you get a huge bunch of useless messages which include a link to one usefull one..
Also notice how they release their search now, before their ie market share gets eroded even more by firefox, then if they got a dominant position on searching they could use that to hold ie up too..
Interestingly, theres a behavior of ie, whereby it sends "if modified" requests for every file on a page (images etc) to see if it should redownload or use a cached copy, firefox just sticks with the cached copy unless you explicitely reload... this causes ie to generate a LOT more hits on sites where people view lots of pages, like online php based games etc and falsely tips the browser stats towards ie.

Well, virtually all of the SNMP support code is copyrighted by DEC, aswell as other parts which are not alpha specific.

Actually, HUGE chunks of the windows sourcecode contain copyright notices saying "DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION"

I also tried entering PI into an Automated Teller Machine, but it would only let me enter the first 12 digits and then it stole my card !
