  1. Re:Wow on Iowa ISP Providing Digital Cable Over Twisted Pair · · Score: 1, Insightful

Impressive, yes, but I wonder. Something like this doesn't seem too scalable. As more and more data gets pushed around the country, I'd rather have an infrastructure able to handle it, rather than forcing everything down 50 year-old copper wires.

This could be a could method for getting cable out to rural areas, but in the end it really slows down the push to upgrade the country's telecommunications system with new and better hardware.

  2. Overpopulation on The Vulnerability of Our Tech-Dependent World · · Score: -1

Overpopulation is such a crock of shit. While I admit that some parts of the world (Hong Kong, North Jersey) are too densely populated to support civilized life, the world as a whole is mostly empty. Countries such as the United States are actually quite underpopulated.

Remember in ninth grade biology class when you learned that if they are too many flies in the jar, they'll die off until they reach a sustainable population? The human population is much the same way. Even the most poverty-stricken regions are not dying off en masse due to lack of resources. In fact, these areas are showing phenomenal population increase.

Europe is the only area really shrinking. It doesn't mean they are more advanced; it just means that in 100 or so years everyone there will be black or Arab because all the white people decided not to reproduce.

You're right, there's nothing wrong with being sad when an important company goes down the tubes. But... this is Loki Games. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. Mac game companies have a hard time staying afloat, and they have a much bigger presence on the home desktop than Linux.

The Linux gaming community should focus on making small, original shareware games, instead of porting big, expensive ones. That's how Bungie was born over in the Mac community.

TuxRacer is pretty shit though. Gotta try harder than that.

Clicking on this link will direct you to the website "goatse.cx". This website contains a large JPEG picture of a human male stretching his anus so that it has a diameter of several inches. You can see his lubricated anal orifice glistening as his fingers part the sphincter to reveal a dark red rectum surrounded by the pinker flesh of the anus. Also, you can see the back of the man's flaccid penis. It looks as if the entire abdominal area has been shaved.

I request that you visit this site by clicking on my cleverly provided link. If you do indeed follow the link as suggested, I will feel a surge of mischievous glee, because I will have tricked a stranger into looking at a disgusting picture. It is one of many methods I use to reinforce my mental superiority over the largely gullible populace of Slashdot, the "nerd news" site.

You may also wish to trick several of your friends into looking at the picture. Don't forget to tell them that you were originally tricked by a particularly cunning Slashdot troll known as Roto-Rooter Man. In this manner I may become notorious, thus increasing the exposure of any future posts created by this account -- and potentially increasing the number of Slashdot viewers I can get to visit the infamous goatse.cx web site.

Thank you, and don't forget to click that link before you move on to another comment. In case the site is currently malfunctioning, write this down so you can visit it later:

At this point, Christopher Reeve is pretty useless. If he ever gets well enough to be a real man again, he'll be so old that he'll be knocking on death's door anyway. What they should do is kill Christopher Reeve, take his stem cells, and give them to a fetus that has a whole wonderful life ahead of it. The idea that some people want to do the opposite is ridiculous.

  23. Anime Is Mainstream; it was never elite and "cool" on NY Times on Anime · · Score: 0
Actually it is mainstream, and has been mainstream for about 10 years (probably longer than Taco has been watching them). The 90's series of Disney animated films (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) are heavily influenced by anime (which in turn is heavily influenced by Disney's 1930's films). Two more cases in point:

    • As you may know, Daft Punk has released anime videos for its 2001 album Discovery. These videos have been seen around quite a bit. Then again, Taco probably thinks Daft Punk is an "underground" band that only people hip to his "subculture" ae aware of.
    • Whatever you think about the quality of the "Pokémon" cartoon, there's no doubt that its style is pretty much anime. 3 year-olds around the country have been watching this cartoon for a few years. How "subculture" is that?

In conculsion, CmdrTaco has no idea what is mainstream and what is subculture. Then again, this is all coming from a guy who is used to mass market crap like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.
