  1. Re:WTF? on IT Workers Not Eligible for Overtime in New Rules · · Score: 1

Man, try growing up there. The Daily Star has always been constant source of entertainment with its bad grammar; speling, and choice of topics for newes stories (hmmm, farm life).
The only redeeming factors are the male/female ratios at the local colleges and the nature surrounding it.
It's nice for a visit, but I will not ever live there again.

Does anybody remember Mr. Show w/ Bob and Dave? I think we need a monkey on this project now. Maybe we could borrow a monkey from the current administration (certainly enough in the cabinet).

HP / Compaq has some nice hot swapping stuff as I understand it.

Also, with PCs being so cheap why hot swap just parts? At our place the whole system is redundant. If a server goes down, we have an identical backup waiting in place to take over immediatly. Doesn't work in all situations but a good many of them.

  8. Training on Mainframe Operators Needed · · Score: 1

All I have to say is that two years ago when I was looking for a job I applied to about 4 operator positions. I was rejected from ALL of them only because the company did not want to train me. They want people that they can pay peanuts and don't have to train. They do not realize that this isn't going to happen. Thankfully I have moved on to a better job as a Unix Analyst / DBA / programmer (for simple projects). If they don't want to spend the time and money for training, of course there will be a shortage.

Ahh, you haven't yet had the experience of sales selling a product that doesn't exist yet. Trust me, that is a problem that can screw employees.

I work at a 24-7 operations center where people are constantly arriving and leaving. To coordinat work and projects asynchronos communication, such as email, voicemail, and ticket tracking software are used. 30 minutes is nothing and can easily be worked around if you do it properly.

  11. Sun Keyboards on Keyboard Layouts for the 21st Century? · · Score: 1

Sun Microsystems is an excellent example of an organization who has done something basic and useful with a keyboard. Sun keyboards (as I'm looking at my sturdy 5c) have useful keys such as cut/paste/copy/find and even Props (guh?). I've had many occasions to use these keys in addition to the ` key while programming. Even if you don't find them helpful in their current state I'm sure that they can be bound to something else whether you are using Solaris or Linux.

I've been trying to set up a serial console on a linux box for months and have been unable to figure it out. I am trying to do it with a straight serial connection (not using pppd and assigning IPs). If someone could tell me how or point me to a good document I would appreciate it.
