  1. Handling Caller ID Spoofing? on Handling Caller ID Spoofing? · · Score: 2, Informative

There is a hardware product (google "Caller ID Manager") that costs about $100 which can enable white-list filtering on her phone. White list filtering means she enters a list of phone numbers she wants to ring through. Numbers not on her white list go either to voicemail or just get lost. This box wouldn't stop angry strangers from leaving a message, but it would stop them from ringing her phone.

  2. Re:Pears on Ripeness Sticker Coming to Supermarket Fruit · · Score: 1

"Just squeeze the pears for crying out loud."

Remember that pears ripen from the inside out so you actually want to check for softness around the stem, not the outside of the pear.

  3. It's about the settlement on Companies Claim iTMS, iPod Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

If the suing company is willing to settle for an amount that costs Apple less than the cost of going to court to fight them, then Apple would save money by settling with them. That could be what this is all about.

  4. Re:I hope it's better than their phone service on Cingular To Offer Mobile High-Speed Internet · · Score: 1

I bought a cell antenna tuned for Cingular's frequencies, plus a low-loss cable and finally an adaptor to plug it into my phone. The antenna is in the attic, which works good enough, although putting it on the roof would get even better reception, but I'm lazy. Cellantenna.com

  5. Try acupuncture on Best Way To Beat A Caffeine Addiction? · · Score: 1

Traditional Chinese medicine - acupuncture and herbs - has some treatments that can help prevent many withdrawal symptoms.

I substituted green tea for coffee. A mild buzz plus it contains various healthy substances. Switching to it rather than going cold turkey was easier for me.

Some of us drink coffee and alcohol because they compensate for each other. You may need to back off alcohol while you are quitting coffee. Especially stop drinking alcohol after dinner, when it will affect your sleep patterns and make you more tired the next day.

Once you eliminate the need for a morning coffee to get going, you will wake up faster. It's almost like gaining an hour in the day.

  6. Digital or film? on Storing Pictures While Backpack Travelling? · · Score: 1

There are several questions to answer before deciding if digital is the appropriate choice.

What does he want to do with the pictures? Does he like to give slide shows? How big does he want to enlarge for printing? Does he use a laptop as a photo album?

What kind of lens does he want to shoot with? Telephoto? Wide angle?

How light and how small does the whole kit need to be? Carrying more than 3 pounds all day long is a drag.

How important is it to shoot at night? Not many digital cameras have a lens as fast as f1.2 which can add an additional hour or two of shooting time to the day.

Is he willing to take two cameras? Perhaps a film camera for the serious shots (enlarging or slide shows) and a digital for snapshots?

Does he like B & W photography? Does he want to make nice big 16 x 20 B & W prints? That implies shooting B & W film and printing in a darkroom.

Does he already own any equipment? Can he borrow any for the trip? Many people have several cameras and are willing to loan ones they arenâ(TM)t using.

Such a long trip really makes the storage of digital files an expensive problem to solve. I would rather put the money into camera and lens than storage cards. Another problem is a digital cameraâ(TM)s appetite for batteries. The solutions for solving the storage and battery problems are going to be more stuff to buy, carry and deal with.

I would say there has to be some specific reasons beyond cost-per-shot for using digital; otherwise the disadvantages donâ(TM)t outweigh the advantages. Like if he really plans on emailing snaps back home as often as possible, maintaining a blog, or something like that which film canâ(TM)t do. Otherwise, just buy the best 35mm camera system he can afford.

  7. TiBook G4 feels slow on Is Mac OS X Slow? · · Score: 1

My 550Mhz TiBook with 1 GB RAM feels sluggish. I didn't get much speed boost upgrading to 10.2. My other machine is an XP box with a P4 running at 1.8 Ghz - feels a lot faster especially web browsing. I use Mozilla 1.1 on both platforms.

OSX is a lovely OS but XP is good enough now for me to not miss OSX.
