"For my money a slightly wider controller with all the buttons in easy reach of my thumb would have been preferrable"
Agreed. In addition to allowing easier access to more buttons, a wider and asymetrical (top to bottom) remote would solve the "rolls off the couch" problem (see my post above), and would also eliminate the "dammit, I grabbed it upside down again" issue as well.
It wouldn't kill them to use more durable ink for the button labels too. 90% of the markings on my 2 YO remote have worn off completely.
"Substantial user interface design and testing went into the Tivo remote control,"
Not substantial enough. Sure, it fits perfectly in your hand and the button layout is good too. But god forbid you set it down for a few minutes and the damn thing is constantly rolling off the couch.
"Sorry, that is bogus. By your argument, public-domain work is illegal."
I was making no such claim or argument. I was simply asking the question (poorly perhaps) "How is the GPL enforceable", which I think has been adequately answered by several others who replied.
"You can put whatever restrictions you want on its use"
And I could write my own license that says "you must chew green gum while writing software incorporating this code". That still doesn't explain how you *enforce* those restrictions.
Again, is it simply the threat of suing for copyright infringement if you don't adhere to the terms?
I think the point the parent is trying to make is that, copyright *is* law so therefore it is enforceable. The GPL isn't a law, but a set of terms that someone implicitly agrees to when using GPL code.
What part of the US copyright code allows someone (through the GPL) to impose additional restrictions or grant additional rights to a GPL licensee, beyond what is explicitly specified in the law? Is this simply a matter of saying, in effect, "If you adhere to these terms, all is good. If you don't we'll sue your ass for copyright infringement"
By quoting statistics and data that show the US is failing to achieve, people are hoping to spread awareness and interest in the hopes that people can and will work hard to change the US.
Raising awareness is one thing. Posting comments such as
Stay in Japan!
The USA is "No. 1" in nothing but weaponry, consumer spending, debt, and delusion.
" but also do not want to get most of the "E"-rated games that only pre-schoolers would enjoy"
E-rated games are not only for preschoolers. E stands for "everyone". Gran Turismo 4 is rated E, and is surely a game that appeals to kids and adults. Dismissing an E-rated game as "for preschoolers" is missing the point of the rating system.
Having kids myself though, I do agree that the new rating is a good idea.

I fear this may be setting a bad precedent though. 1. Cancel popular geek show 2. Wait for geek uproar followed by generous donations to bring it back 3. Profit

"The result: over one-third shared their passwords. If there is any good news in the story..."
That *was* the good news. The bad news is that 95% of the passwords were either "1234" or "password"
Why not just hire the Annoying Coffee Shop Guy from MTV's Boiling Point.

"Crap!"
Not necessarily the "best", but Shareaza is very good, for a number of reasons:
- Works well (IMHO)
- Open source and Free (beer)
- Connects to Gnutella, Gnutella2 and Emule networks
- Built-in bittorrent support.

Yes, I can see how making a detailed list of flaws is the best way to show your love of your country.

"I'm actually kinda partial to Dr. Ferd's Wart Remover"
Seems a bit overpriced at $6.99
The cheapest source for these I've come across is here $8.99 for a 5 pack.
They have tons of variations on this item too, including dual plugs, flat plugs (so you can put furniture up against them), etc.
