Hell, these days, in some countries there isn't the much difference between a private enterprise and a state enterprise anyway, with all the under-the-table deals and such.

Pretty much every news agency does more to validate a story than Slashdot ever does. And when they do screw up, they make sure everyone knows.

Calling the Slashdot editors "editors" is a complete joke. They are not editors or journalists in the slightest sense. A quick browse over the front page should confirm that.

As for Slashdot doing better than most other sites by posting links to their original sources. That's because all Slashdot does is post links. They're not writing articles. If they didn't link to their "sources" then there would be nothing worth posting.

I still find value in Slashdot, but saying they're doing better than other big news sites in terms of integrity etc is just plain bollocks.

I think what Jobs means when he says "digital hub" is just that: A hub. They aren't too interesting in trying to make an all-in one type device. Rather, they will develop things they think are wise for their business, and leave the rest up to 3rd party companies to provide.

So I don't think we'll be seeing a media center PC from Apple any time soon. But I'm sure we'll see many things that make it easier for 3rd parties to add such stuff.

But yes, It would have been nice of them to have included digital audio out. I'm guessing the only reason they didn't was because the mini is supposed to be a low-end Mac, and many people still don't use digital audio yet.

I don't like the word either. But I doubt that's where it's origins are. And I don't think it's a meaningless or ambiguous word.

It's pretty clear what a blog is IMHO. It's a site (or section of a site) where the primary content is composed of many small blurbs sorted chronologically, usually of a casual/informal witting style.

They also don't have to be the personal musings and experiences of a famous person. There are many "news" style blogs that have a sharp subject focus (like Engadget.com, Gizmodo.com, etc). There are also many personal blogs that also have much content on a particular subject (Zeldman.com etc).

Also, blogs aren't really the same as a diary or journal. Those are both more focused on personal experiences. And as I said above, blogs aren't restricted to that.

No. I'm not a hypocrite. I don't even see how you can accuse me of such, since I never said that people should stop testing because it harms animals. I was just correcting the obvious false impression that this person was giving; that no animals are harmed in testing.

As for the pet snake, It's natural for a snake to eat rats. And the rat will die fairly quickly. People don't have to perform these experiments, and they also do it fully knowing that they may be harming the animal. So there's quite a bit of difference between feeding a snake and animal testing.

With regards to that suffering has been around for a long time. I fail to see what this has to do with anything. As why, simply because that's the way things used to be, should things continue to be the same way?
That kind of argument makes about as much sense as the argument that we must eat meat because we still have molars. Not that I want to turn this into an anti-meat eating argument, since I do eat meat. But the reason many use to justify this are quite stupid.

Perhaps you shouldn't make generalizations about people's ideologies and way of life by a single post. Perhaps you should also wake up and realise that many issues are not clear cut, and the many people are smart enough to realise this, and don't create black and white views on such subjects.

In terms of where I stand on the whole animal testing issue. I'm pretty much on the fence. Mainly because a lot of this research ends up preventing a lot of suffering.
