You would think that the Slashdot developers would be smart enough to write a function that automaticly searches for similar headlines, and even blurb text, and displays the results next to the article when it gets reviewed.

Well, really, they are smart enough. They're just a bit lazy.

People here oftern blab on about how doing X is going to affect the company's image. But the truth is, only a small group of people even read or follow these kinds of things.

A lot of what people describe sounds suspiciously like ADD.

I don't think it does, as we're only talking about a few traits found in ADD. Traits that--as this article suggests--are caused by the environment the person is in. An ADD diagnosis requires these traits to be there from a young age, and to not be caused by the environment the person is currently in.

Of course, we don't really need to put ritalin in the water supply. Since most people are already being medicated by Starbucks and the likes ;)

With the amount of bandwidth that Google uses, I doubt helping out Wikipedia is going to cost them that much.

I'm glad they're doing it, even if it means a "Hosting kindly donated by Google" message at the bottom of the page, or even ads. The last few times I've tried to access Wikipedia, I've given up waiting for it to load.

Perhaps I need to spell it out more clearly. Putting child molesters in prison isn't going to make them want to stop molesting children. Infact, being exposed to all the violence in prison is more likely to make them more violent.

So exactly what is more important here? Preventing other children from being abused, or getting this evil, sick fuck back?

So, when is Slashdot going to fix their HTML? They don't even have to use XHTML or even CSS. Just plain old HTML 4.01, or even another older version of HTML. As long as they actually follow the specs for whatever version they choose to follow instead of serving up utter shite.

What Slashdot are doing by not fixing their HTML is saying: "Open source developers produce ugly hack code". It doesn't matter if you believe that or not, or that Slashdot is just one site and hardly a true representation of the open source community. But because Slashdot is popular, and is afiliated with people like OSDN, this is the message that many people get.
