    And the nice thing is is that it comes with a Mac OS X (and also Linux among others) console binary. Which means you can run a nice little cron job that grabs a bunch of web pages and plops the .pdb files into your sync folder ready for the next time you sync up.

    Um, try the first Mac ever released in 1984. Or perhaps even the Apple Lisa the year before. All Macs up until the Mac II and several other models afterwood were all in one (the Mac SE, SE/30, Classic, Colour Classic and a few others)

    "Each 6"x9" piece would be "updated" via a wireless connection from a handheld device. The text on the paper instantly changed to a new price. Pretty good stuff all around."

    Link that up to the store's closed circuit TV and some good facial recognition software and the store can set the prices of its stock based on your credit card spending profile - just like amazon was (is?) doing online

    Unfortunately (or fortunately IMHO) it's already happening. Mac game porting companies are forced to implement their own D3D workalikes. I like the fact we have an OpenSource alternative though. Gives me something to play with.

    Actually that isn't quite true. Bungie and Apple worked on the networking library together (the legendary Uber project) but the library's history is rather mirky here. Apple later took Project Uber and released it under their Public Source license as the "OpenPlay" library.

    Unfortunately the code was in such a bad way that it's taken a very long time for anyone to do anything useful on it. Some volunteers have wrappet NetSprocket on top of OpenPlay. And that is where most of it's usefulness lies.

    The latest iMac (iLuxo) has a fan. All iMacs prior to that had no fans. The addition of the fan is the one thing that might prevent me upgrading my wife's indigo iMac.

    Carbon events that use the old 'classic' event model suffer from what you just described. If you use CarbonEvents you don't suffer from any of that. You are using CarbonEvents aren't you?

    Actually as an Apple fanatic I think I'll be waiting for the price to drop. The general consensus around my office (half a dozen rabid Mac programmers) is that it's a nice device but too expensive.

    It has 20 minutes of skip protection. Even if you do drop it and your HD does get scratched you've still got a fully working MP3 player... Um... For the next 20 minutes anyway.

    I have a LaCie 30GB PocketDrive. It has Firewire and USB interfaces and runs off the bus power if you're running it over Firewire (comes with a tiny adaptor if you have to run it over USB). I swear by it. It's one of the few devices that have changed the way I work (Airport being another). The really cool is that I originally bought a 6GB version but had an accident with it (ahem). I sent it back to them and they sent me back a 30gigger in return. Sweet!

    I must say, flying on Mars is a lot of fun and very very different. Even with rocket assisted take offs and a REALLLY long runway you're still struggling to get enough airspeed to get you airborn, even though the ground underneath your gear is racing by at 600kts. And just try navigating your way to another airstrip to land. No last minute 45 degree turns to line up with the tarmac, to turn 90 degrees with on Mars it takes a good 10 minutes and you've gone 100 miles in that time... Lotsa fun.

    On every new Mac (and every time you install a fresh OS upto and included 10.1) the Web Browser's default home page is http://apple.excite.com/ will this mean there'll be a lot of machines with a lot of broken home pages in a month or so?

    Excite is basically gone. A hell of a lot of the staff that worked on the portal (and all the staff that worked on stuff like clubs, message boards etc) have got the axe I dont think theres a heck of a lot to sell.
