  1. Pathetic on Grand Theft Auto Civil Case Moves Forward · · Score: 1

I can't think of a better way to dishonor the memories of your loved ones than by trying to make money off their tragic deaths...

That's probably why you edit stories for Slashdot, instead of being, you know... a rocket scientist.

Rocket scientists being the best people to clean corkcrew shaped lenses, of course...

  5. Farmers know this on Round-Up Ready Coca Plants · · Score: 1

Does this point the way of the future for other weeds?

Any successful farmer knows that consistent, repeated use of a chemical to remove a population of pests will lose its effectiveness as the pests become resistent or evasive to the chemical. This can happen naturally over a few decades or in a few years depending on the the agents involved. While there are notable exceptions, its usually still a good idea to vary pesticides and their applications.

  6. "The" Manual on Gaming Site Reviews.. Real Life? · · Score: 1

My parent players gave me, what they called an online manual when I was a newb. It had all sorts of weird rules in it about what you could and couldn't do and how you were supposed to play. Some of the rules were just weird, like what kind of rations you could eat during a certain time of the solar cycle. Most of it was about developer brown nosing though. Supposedly, following the rules got you a better endgame sequence.

It wasn't long before I found out that that there were all kinds of these supposed manuals. There were a lot of overlapping rules between them, but it was clear that some of the stuff was just made up clan bullshit. Most of them are woefully outdated too.

Anyone else see one of these so called manuals?

That's right, we have to get off our butts and do something. Talking about it is just wasting time. Talking and not doing is the problem. If we just sit here and talk about it, it does nothing. So we need to just do it and talk about it no more. Let's just stop talking and do something because the more we talk about it the less gets done. This is absolutely the time to make a difference rather than make a speech. ... Sarcasm is so much better than whining about whine complaining whiners....

  9. Sheep deserve the slaughter on Unreasonable Searches When Going to Work? · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, a business can do most any legal thing to you that doesn't void some contract you have with them. This includes performing searches on its employees to making them wear costumes of famous chickens to work. It isn't fair and it doesn't make it right. Sure you could quit, but I'm assuming there's some non-trivial reason you haven't already (you may like/need your job). Everytime a search is performed for no other reason than there is a 1 in 100,000 chance that the person being searched is a criminal, they are making that person prove their innocence. It doesn't matter that these searches are performed by private business that can deny you employment, goods or services for non-compliance which is perfectly legal. It still isn't right to assume you want to break the law. That is the justification for objection to the search. The sheep that advocate this fear induced assumption of guilt, act under good pretenses, safety and protection, but are neglecting the fact that most people are still not criminals. Creating a police state because of a perceived threat (the current threat isn't really any higher than it was before) is not only irrational, but indignant to all law abiding people. You have nothing to hide, nor should you be made to prove it. "Actions don't make criminals, laws do." - Martha

  10. Back yard fun on Private Rocketplane Test A Success · · Score: 1

I love these private ventures. It shows that humans will either one day inadvertently rule the galaxy for all the wrong reasons or more likely blow themselves to smithereens in the attempt to do something cool enough to make a quick buck.

  11. Grand Forks, ND on Black Death's Genome Cracked · · Score: 2, Interesting

A friend of mine has been doing research at UND, Grand Forks. Most of the bug's DNA has been decoded for a long time. They've been cloning and disabling black death for years in their labs. Recently (this past summer), they engineered a mutant hybrid which isn't dangerous to humans. With the complete genome, they should be able to do really fun stuff with it.
