    After being a POP3 guy for 8 years I've jumped ship for MAPI.


    That's kinda like: after being a Unix guy for eight years, I bought a motorcycle. POP3 and MAPI are not related in the manner you suggest.


    I originally thought you mean "IMAP"... But in the next sentence, you mention how you're betraying IMAP4 by using... MAPI..

    Gateway at least offers accidental damage protection.

    As a test of this, at one point a friend and I 'accidentally' smashed a hammer through the LCD screen during a drunken question of how tough the screens are.

    Next day someone came out and replaced it.

    I grinned sheepishly when he asked and gave him a large tip saying "I don't remember." :-)

    A. PJ is a good person, who has done a lot of work in her spare time, for free, to benefit the community at large.

    B. Before SCO was SCO, AT&T was SCO - see the BSD debacle to know what I mean.

    In effect, we know SCO is full shit - but what about future companies? What would you do, if right now, SCO marched up to your business and demanded 20k in license fees?

    Most would cave in. This insurance will help you fight.

    If this insurance becomes available to individuals, I will get it - just because I really like groklaw, and think PJ's a cool person. Okay, so the backing up against pointless lawsuits bit helps, but.. :)

    Uhm, where have you seen rational people saying linux is as good on the desktop?

    It's good on the desktop, iff a. you know what you're doing, and b. you build a PC specifically for it - e.g. using components from manufacturers that release either drivers or specifications.

    I'm not saying hardware companies are holding linux down at all - without 90% of them cooperating, look how far linux has come.

    All I'm saying is journalist hacks should do a little fact checking, first. Would you buy OSX and then be pissed off at Apple because it won't run on your intel/sparc system?

    Would you buy a random sound card and then be pissed off when it didn't work on your OSX system? How about a DVD burner?

    Catch my drift? :)

    Uhhm, it is so not the linux communities problem that a sound card doesn't work.

    Yes, a significant amount of hardware has been reverse engineered, and made to work. I don't, however, see how you can blame "Linux" when your el cheapo piece of crap doesn't work in Linux, because the manufacturer did not provide drivers nor specs.

    By your logic, Microsoft should be responsible for writing all the drivers for all hardware that is supposed to interoperate with windows.

    Is your cable modem upstream capped?

    Every cable provider I've seen caps upstream to around 20k/sec.

    I haven't seem them all, though; I switched to DSL as soon as I move, and haven't looked back. [no anti-server b/s, much less 'lag', etc] course, it's more expensive to get an equivilent downstream, but.. :)
