  1. I think another issue is which *version* you use on Who is Using Tomcat or Jetty in Production? · · Score: 1

My company (a financial institution using tomcat 3 on AIX servers) is still using older versions of tomcat to serve up our jsp's. The main reason we use an older version is simple: tomcat can be a bitch to configure We've had tomcat 3 working for about two years, give or take, and migrating from 3 to 4 could be a potential nightmare (there are some groups who have already tried it inside the company and spent many a weekend in the office scratching their heads). While I will agree that tomcat is slower than Apache, there are tweaks that you can do to prevent the webserver from crashing and to speed things up a little bit. One such tweak is increasing the default memory allocation from whatever it is set at (i think 64MB) to 256MB(or whatever you see fit). Granted there are problems in doing this, too, but it does speed speed things up in most instances. Just make sure you have your stressball handy next time a nullPointerException rears its ugly head... :)

  3. cuz dark city sucked on Episode II In Trouble? · · Score: 1

i'm sorry, but the ONLY thing that dark city had going for it was the production values. and i'm quite shocked that people have been saying that dark city had this great production value and better story, when more than half the people who worked on dark city worked on the matrix. they looked VERY similar. and how on earth is a floating city of telekentic riff-raffs more plausible than AI going out of control? maybe you should watch the matrix and dark city back to back. then you will realize the error of your ways. and if not, maybe you should just give up hope of ever being a rational human being. haha.

oh... and any movie with martial arts choreography by yuen wo ping instantly gets points with me. and last time i checked, dark city didn't have that... so there is reason #247 that it sucked my nuts.

Even if you don't agree with my policies, please give SOMETHING to a good cause this holiday season, whether that would be PBS or NPR or one of your own pet causes. we're so saturated with "be a good capitalist" in the media, we often forget about what truly makes a good person. give it some thought... it can give you a good break from the equally abstract concept of programming. :)

i find it an interesting situation... a lot of people who work in the industry caught between the dislike of giant corporations controlling our lives and government, and the need for a paycheck. makes you feel like a hippocrite, honestly. but what i find disturbing is when people who are supposedly enlightened claim that idealism is backwards or that political vigillance is nothing but the behavior of crackpots. and that they support and defend these big corporations because they happen to be on the right side of the tracks. try stepping out of your tiny little microcosm for just a few minutes and realize that just because you have it easy and make a lot of money doesn't mean these corporations you work for are just. How can you justify a corporation that makes billions of dollars in profits, and then lays off thousands of workers? how can you justify a company with record profits that hires 11 year old children to work 18 hour days making 18 cents an hour? There is such a selfish "me me me" attitude among so many people in this world, it is no wonder that peace can't be reached in the middle east or that people are shot and killed for something as simple as a pair of shoes or their sexual orientation. i'm glad to see so many people walk through life with their blinders on. i just hope that those people are the ones laid off. then maybe they can see how the other half lives...

  7. agreed... on Copyrights on Web Interfaces · · Score: 1

i agree. if you are going to "borrow" someone's code, giving them credit is polite (though i don't think necessary as long as you change the code a bit). if it is not a commercial site borrowing the code, why make such a fuss? i've borrowed stuff from other sites to see how it worked. after editing it to my specifications, it didn't look anything like the page i borrowed it from. should i still give credit to the place i borrowed it from? i would, cuz i have no problem with giving another hard working web designer his fair dues... but if it no longer resembles it, why should i? and there are options you have to restrict people from stealing your code, like scripts that disable the view source or right click option (though i personally think those go against the freedom the internet embodies). i just think that someone made a good point earlier... when someone borrows your code and parodies your site, it is a form of flattery, as they wouldn't even be bothering with the parody unless there was something there in the first place. our whole job as web designers is to get people to view our sites, and if someone views it and likes it (or hates it) enough to parody it, i guess you must be doing something right...

well, since i'm not a programmer, i can't argue with the programming aspect of NeXT. but from what i have worked with (i am a web designer at WMU, and they still have a few NeXT boxes lying around) they're not that great. some ideas where innovative. some boggled the mind. but over all, i think they were good for the time, but as with most machines, it got outdated VERY quickly because of lack of ability to adapt. it's either Jobs' way or the highway. i'm just glad Jobs never ran for office. anyway, i think another downfall of NeXT was Jobs telling people they needed to upgrade to a very expensive machine, and after they bought it, he told them they didn't really need that one and that she should get the NEWER one because the one they just bought sucked. in business, that is pretty much handing the executioner his axe and putting your head in the basket. i personally don't like the CLI for NeXT either. but that is just my opinion.

Gibson- Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive, Virtual Light, Idoru, All Tomorrow's Parties, the Difference Engine.

Dick- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, The Philip K. Dick Reader (a compilation of some of his best work, like We Can Remember It For You Wholesale)

    Sterling- Holy Fire

    Stephenson- Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash

Heinlein- The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Starship Troopers.

Matheson- I Am Legend (i know this fits more into horror, but it's just such a cool story... until chuck heston got his grubby paws into it, anyway)

Orwell- 1984, Animal Farm (i know it's more of a parable than anything, but it's still a dystopia, so i put it here)

    Clarke- 2001-3001

    Bradbury- Fahrenheit 451

    Rucker- Software/Wetware/Hardware

hope that helps a little bit. if i had more time, i'd probably be able to come up with more.
