  1. This had better not imapact the trial on Microsoft Reorganization · · Score: 1

I hope they aren't thinking that this will make a difference. If it does - if it influences the DOJ in any way - I will be sick.

the article, btw, does not hint that this is micros~1 strategy, but it is obvious that SteveB~1 is shooting for that.

  2. I thought USB was proprietary ... on Linux 2.2.5 Released · · Score: 1

... and there were licensing fees involved. Is this wrong? I thought that was the reason USB support on linux was so slow in coming.

Yeah, I like Nick but he really isn't a part of the same community ESR is, not by a long shot. He's a fine columnist though.

  4. What about Petreley? on ESR Wants to Retire · · Score: 1
I think Nick might make a good replacement - maybe not respected as a hacker (although I know he is a programmer), but he does express himself very well (better than Eric I think), is respected in the industry and is a major fud-buster.

then again, maybe Nick is better as a critic ...

I can't believe someone this ignorant was trying to install an OS by himeself. Ig uess he learned a lot, but one should be willing too.

I, for one, did not think Red Hat's answers to him were out of line.

At any rate, this is where the lines will be drawn. Anyone even remotely inclined or curious will be using Linux and everyone else, Windows. Linux will segregate computer uses very sharply until it is as easy to learn as windows for them ... it is almost like back in the early 90's when there were people "with PC's" and those "without": now we'll have those "using linux" and those "using windows". At least for a while.

  8. Cynicism on Matt Groening's "Futurama" featured in Salon · · Score: 2

Has anyone noticed how cynical most of the sohisticated humor of our times is?

The Simpsons, The Onion ... it seems that it is not so much that we can laugh at ourselves, but that is all we can do. If one looks at the humor of previous generations, you really don't see these sentiments.

Homer wouldn't be so funny if he weren't so true!

Please don't pay attention to LAME (Lawrence A Mettler, Esq)

His major point was that someone with root access to an open source system could install a trojaned program. Duh.

I remember him from the infoworld forum he was talking about. Everyone was paying attention to what he was saying, but he wouldn't argue, he would just repeat the same thing over and over, even though several people were refuting everything he had to say.

  12. ... but the RIAA uses Radio to push "music" on MP3s Causing Decline in CD Sales? · · Score: 1
If radio is in trouble, the RIAA is dead, they will have no means to force their garbage down peoples throats. Radio and recording industries are interdependent. I just hope this kills them off completely.

The simple fact is that coporations which have made their money by packaging and selling information (of any kind) are obsolete (or quickly becoming so). They are no longer neccesary and serve no useful function in society. They have enjoyed such tremendous power; and they've abused it so horribly that no one is sad to see them go. This is truly a good thing.

The thought of seeing these dinosaurs get burned within my lifetime makes me just giddy.

In an age where our politicians are souless, pathetic cardboard puppets "invented" by marketing committees, I found Newt refreshing, even if I did disagree with him. He was at least alive, and he had the courage to state his ideas in public. Even if he was a real jerk in his personal life.

He was a loose cannon, and he did put his foot in his mouth quite a few times, but neither did he deserve the merciless treatment he got from the media.

  17. Netware is powerful but clunky on Novell Opens Source · · Score: 2

It is definitely weird. Some management from the server console, some from the workstation. No shell to speak of ... the server console is perhaps the worst CLI ever concieved, with it's clumsy natural language commands. Netware is kinda crappy, and it's hell to manage, but it is fast. If it had a unified management interface (like a unix style shell) it would be OK. NDS is very nice, of course, but that's different.

It makes sense that they are opening the source a little; they did take a LOT from the Free software community for Netware 5 (bind, dns, xfree, et al).
