Linux is protected from asshole corporations like Apple and M$ due to the GPL. Apple CAN'T have linux. To hell with Apple, I don't care if they die out or what.
BSD is not protected, and has been raped by every greedy bastard out there.
First, I personally am glad that slashdot has Katz. He is a fine writer and I enjoy his work.
Secondly, why go to a publisher at all? Who needs them? If you can copyleft your work and publish to the web... The problem is how to make money off of it; it is entirely different from software, no? You could still sell "added value" (a hardcopy) but who would publish a copylefted book (besides O'Reilly)? Are we really looking at an age where authors, artists, programmers - in short, everyone who creates information - actually OWN the work THEY produce? It is very interesting indeeed. That it was ever any other way will soon be looked on as an absurdity, I hope.
I just can't stand the jaunty queer attitude that KDE and Be have. Be-this, Be-that, K-this, K-fscking everything. BeOS is especially gross. It's as if they're tring too hard to be cool or something.
At least Gnome is decidedly non-commercial. It oozes "anti-commercialness".
Boy, has this word gone through some changes in it's popular meaning lately. When I was growing up, a technical person most likely would not refer to himself as "geek" of "nerd"; these were reserved for people with certain personality types; not so much what one was interested in. To me a "geek" conjured up images of a weak minded, toady or stooge type with no social abilities. Or perhaps someone who freely discussed his latest Dungeons and Dragons adventures with total strangers who were not interested. Anyway, I have not seen "Rushmore", but I'm not expecting much. Technical people - ESPECIALLY computer people have been badly represented in hollywood to date. "Good Will Hunting"? Please, Matt Damon is not a believeable geek, with his I'm-so-beautiful-harvard-jock thing going on. It's almost insulting to cast this guy as a geek. "PI" came closer, and although it was visually fascinating, it really was a rather weak movie; more like an 85 minute music video.
Why does everyone think you need to understand kernel source to admin Linux? This is patently ridiculous. I don't understand a lick of c and I'm doing just fine adminning linux... you don't need to know any programming at all other than very basic shell scripting... but advanced shell scripting helps a great deal. C or writing drivers has nothing to do with being an admin. on the other hand, there are a lot of c programmers who don't know a lick about setting up sendmail, DNS, or any other server programs... that is what adminning is.
True, and hunting down libraries for downloading isn't exactly my favorite pastime (I'd rather shave my balls with a weed wacker), but mostly this is a good thing. It's painful sometimes, but it is a good thing. Anything GTK is a good thing for X (as opposed to motif).
I hate that half german sounding crap... probably most of the people saying "boxen" don't know they're changing the number of their english nouns in german. Ugh. This sounds REALLY stupid to anyone who knows german. Please put a stop to this. Actualy, "box" to me is not a computer but something feminine, as in "tight box". Thank You.
As long as they don't I'll be happy; but I just know we'll start seeing x based setups (Star Office) that are a bitch to install over a network (instead of RPMs or Deb's), violations of the file system standard (haven't seen this yet, but I know it will happen - windows guys love to install of the root) etc.
It's *assholes* like you that help make Linux inaccesible to the general public. Katz is obviously not a moron; he is only ignorant about computers. I'll wager he knows a LOT more tha you about a good many things, Dork.
These folks remind me of Alec Baldwin's character in "Glengary Glen Ross"... except in the movie, it was funny. Here, it's just saddening and pathetic.
This isn't true because very few musicians make money from recordings anyway. Most musicians make money teaching in college and/or gigging. Mostly only rock stars make money selling records, and I say it's about time we trimmed some of that crap anyway. What we might see is an end to POP music, no music. There were musicians everywhere BEFORE we could record music and they will be there after recordings have become WORTHLESS too.
What these people are doing is analogous to the free software movement, but real (literate) musicians have been doing this for years (any jazz players with "real books" out there?), since printed music is FAR easaier to distribute than digital recordings, which are huge in comparison.

FWIW, Gnome is definitely hip.
They all fscked up ... the kernel headers and sources RPMS are 2.2.1-ac5; the kernel RPM is 2.2.1-3, the pcmcia stuff is compiled against 2.2.1-ac5 .
I had a hell of a time getting it to work (NONE of the modules would load, it's a long story) and dumped and went back to 2.0.36.
Also, why can't we have "i386" only kernel tarballs or RPMs? It would certainly make them smaller/easier to download.
I think laptop users should especially avoid this for now ... any laptop users out there using 2.2?

Look at this guy
"Nonetheless, the LINUX phenomenon begs an important question ..."
He means raises the question, begging the question is term used to describe a logical fallacy. Don't editors take english courses?
"We are talking about another OS built on top of the same kernel."
Uh, Linux is a kernel, and nothing more
Where did they GET this guy???

I have a OEM copy of Blows 95 still in shrink wrap, but I'm still too busy drinking ... maybe whne I recover later this week I'll return it
Just change the graphic so that the "R" is a little higher and looks like a middle finger

How ironic. Here's an online magazine declaring how great "open source" is and charging outlandish prices to have access. Ridiculous.
