What is with Micros~1's "attack" on Free Software? How can they, in all concsience, declare war on something their customers obviously want?
The real casualty here is the customer. Micros~!1 want to be our sole source for software. Micros~1, in declaring war on Free Software, has in actuality declared war on the customer.
It seems that Micros~1 inspected the linux code and found a weakness. They then publicized a benchmark that exploited that weakness. Good strategy.
Will linux ever win benchmarks against NT if Micros~1 just benchmarks NT against linux's weaknesses? They will just find another one.
The good side is that Micros~1 is actually funding linux development by finding weaknesses. Perhaps linux will one day be perfect and there won't be any weaknesses left:-). The bad part is that linux may never win any benchmarks, since only Micros~1 can afford to test them.
Eg., why haven't we seen a gigabit ethernet benchmark?
I'll bet it has something to do with the tons of accounts created within the last couple months. They've probably been around long enough to get moderator privs
I wonder if these "tons of accounts" have something to do with the "linux attack team"? No?
Coincidental that almost simultaneously Micros~1 organizes a linux attack team, slashdot is inundated with pro micors~1 posts and trolls, and linux bested in benchmarks?
You can bet your butt they do. It is common knowledge that they did this in the OS/2 days, they admitted to as much. The seeded Fidonet with trolls to constantly post negative comments about OS/2, in an attempt to make it unenjoyable for OS/2 folks to hang out there. I remember this. Now they are doing it to slashdot.
If you doubt this, there was an article about it on ZDNet somewhere, this info came out peripheral to the MS/DOJ trial. They did admit publicly to doing this shit. I can't find the article right now but will post it later if anyone wants "proof".
There isn't anything you can do about it. Slashdot used to be a place for linux and nix folks to hang out. Now we have to listen to all this pro-MS off topic crap all over the place. Sad.
Linux will never have a chance to compete against Windows, MacOS, or even BeOS when it comes to normal users... GUI GUI GUI. Unless Linux is rewritten from the ground up to be user-friendly, it will be confined to the server/geek market.
Arghhh!!! You are talking about the home market. Yeah, linux will probably always be a hard sell to a home user. But the business desktop is another matter entirely. Windows is frankly totally unsuited for business use. A linux desktop at work, whatever you want at home.
Besides, why does Linux have to "take over"? It'd be nicer if all the major OS's each had a roughly equal slice of the pie.
Well, for everyone to have a chance, linux does have to "take over". The more popular linux gets, the more popular Be gets. All I really want linux to do (market-wise) is knock windows off it's throne. Windows doesn't belong there. I don't want to annihilate Micros~1, but they are right now in a position to do whatever they want, and that is extremely bad. Do you really want to find yourself in year 2015, and be confused as to why drive "d:" on your coffee machine is drive "f:" on your computer? Linux may even force them to "fix" windows if it eats enough of its market share.
I just see linux and the internet as forcing the application/os market to adhere to open interfaces. This is a necessary condition for other operating systems to flourish, or even to have a chance at all. The current system simply does not allow this and it is suffocating everyone. BeOS has therefore no chance without linux. And neither does anyone else.
It's surreal to see Linux advocates yelling about a Microsoft monopoly and wishing for a Linux one.
I don't care whether Micros~1 lives or dies. I just don't want them to be the only game in town. The current system is wrong, wrong, wrong.
I don't care how sunny and bright and beautiful your little M$ world is. Enjoy your job fucking people over for a living and being part of one of the most greedy fucked up organizations in the world. Why don't you just stay at winfiles.com and stay the fuck away from slashdot?
I totally agree 100%. NT is so much better at doing most things and because of it's ease-of-use, it costs our training staff probably 1/16 of what it would cost to train people on Linux. Blah aha Thank you MS and PC Mag for showing these freaks whose boss.
You obviously know nothing of unix or NT. How is NT easier to administer than unix? I used to think so until I LEARNED unix, now I can't believe how utterly clunky NT's pathetic management tools are. Worthless.
FWIW, unix (all kinds) are an ADMINISTRATORS OS. NT is a LUSERS OS. NT is absolutely horrible to administer.
1. Linux is OPEN (what Stallman means by free) 2. LINUX is stable (unlike Mac or Windows) 3. Windows (95 and NT) have MAJOR knuckleheaded design compromises. The windows UI is horribly broken (drive letters, anyone?). Linux is not there yet, but I'd rather start out tabula rasa without the frills than stick with the bloated beached stinking whale that is windows.
Given that Micros~1 cannot fix the bullshit design compromises of Dildows, it will eventually catch up with them. The windows comcept is starting to collapse under it's own weight.
I think the field is complicated enough to warrant one... has anyone ever heard of such a thing? It would be great to get rid of all those company specific crap certifications out there (which only feed monopolies).
In "The Microsoft Files", the author relates a story about when Bill Gates first discovered the internet. After a while, he became furious, and was stamping his feet and screaming... nothing on the internet was in Micros~1 file formats.
Looks like he's getting his way. God I hate that fucker.
Your car analogy does not hold at all; it isn't even remotely analogous to the software situation. Please rethink.
File Formats are the real issue. Not OS, not the app, the file format - period. That is why everyone uses MS Office in the first place - not because it is so "good".
To say that file formats are irrelevant is absurd. Tell that to all the companies who go through the torture of new MS Office releases and new incompatible file formats. The situation is out of hand and now that Micros~1 has "won" they are actively engaging in price gouging.
I do not know tex, but isn't this regarded as the ultimate document format? What is wrong with thst as a standard? I know there are several efforts to make document processesors based on it (klyx, lyx).
Is XML suitable for printing? HTML definitely is not.
does anyone actaully *use* pixmap themes?
on
qt 2.0 released

· Score: 1
AFAIK KDE won't allow pixmap themes... to me this is no great loss, they are too slow anyway. Mostly the pixmap themes just serve to give Gnome a rep for being slow (and most are very poorly thought out, with black text on dark backgrounds)
that's nuthin! I swing from vine to vine from my house to my isp, toggling switches manually at either end for eatch bit... through low crawling through the forty yards of mud and barbed wire in front of my house is startin to slow me down!
I'm seeing nothing but "w2k is so awesome!" shit all over the place, totally off topic pro micros~1 garbage not being moderated down, all sorts of anti micros~1 posts (well reasoned or no) being moderated as "trolls" or "flamebait".
I've been pounding the living fuck out of w2k with notepad and paintbrush, and it has not locked up once on me in over fifteen minutes.
In addition, I am running it on a 386DX40/8MB and Office 2000 is smooth as shit from a duck's ass.
Active Directory simply rox, I've set up web folders on IIS and sharing over all 20 of my 386's. In integration is frankly, awsome. Absolutely none of it would work with my legacy linux and OS2 systems, so I just deleted them and replaced with W2K! W2K is fun! Fun, fun fun!
People, the Blue Screens are a thing of the PAST. The future is here now and the future is W2K. If I had a penny for evey time linsux bullshit CRAShe

I would wager Woz is an INFP... a rare type of person. He seems very cool, perhaps even uninterested in things unless he can give it an ethical purpose. I just kind of pick that up from him; the way he was uninterested in the business, and the fact that he teaches children now.
striping - yeah you wast one disk, but read performance is awsome. On a home system, so long as you back up your stuff, the fact that it increases failure possibilities should be too much of a problem. I would rather do this than RAID5.
Of course is fault tolerance is actually what you want, and not speed, then maybe you should just try simple mirroring.
I do not think you can do RAID5 because there is no way to have more than 2 ATA controllers that I know of.
Since they are so strongly posiioning themselve as a "media OS".. why are they worried about games at this point? Are they courting the major midi and audio software houses? What about movie production stuff? Even under windows and Mac this stuff isn't very good.
Does anyone know what is going on with Be in this regard?
Personally, I would far rather have this situation than not being able to respond at all. The emails were vulgar. However, they were NOT innaccurate. Mindcraft's test was outrageous. What do they deserve? Politenness? They already knew they were wrong. What good does it do to point that out to them? A waste of time.
I think it's fine that they were flamed, but a little less vulgarity, perhaps. If those were the worst posts they had, I actually think they got off pretty easy.
Companies are just going to have to deal with this. When they put up total bullshit they will be called on it. The era of one way top down communications is over.

Too much baggage. Time to start over.
... but we all know how the story ENDS.
