I support a small recruiting company. Yes, they use word. Yes, we have a constant problem with viruses which I cannot keep up with (niether can nai).
The problem for us is not that we want them in doc format, but that everyone sends that to us. The format is utterly irrelevant to us, all the recruits formatting is wiped out anyway in most cases. Plain text would be better.
Because of file format problems, we must maintain a "doc" version and an ascii version of every resume we get. At 25,000 - 30,000 resumes, the docs take up a lot of space, about 30 times what the text files take up. What a waste.
Every job I've ever gone into was a mess. When I first took the job I have I was pulling my hair out this place was so bad, I mean everything here was wrong; the users habits, the way they did things, the software they used, everything was just fucked. Now, a year later, things have started to calm down and I find myself with a LOT of free time to implement back burner projects.
A sysadmin should never look idle. There are always things to do, things to improve.
The reason I stayed was that I have so much control over things, and people will listen to me. And as clueless as my users are, I still like most of them.
Unfortunately the slashdot/linux today conspiracy - lately - is really hurting my productivity. Urgh... back to the books...
I was setting up an NT server today; problems were such that I think I must've rebooted it 40 or 50 times. Those crappy Phoenix BIOS' ALREADY take years to boot (give me Award any day), I can't imagine what this would be like with ads. Working on winblows machines frequently, this would just kill me.
As it was I was zoned out in a puddle of drool after just 40 reboots. With ads I think I'd have gone postal.
He brags that he created ethernet, but what most folks don't realize is that ethernet is the WORST networking technology still in wide use today. Switching (something I bet he didn't come up with) is the only thing that makes it viable anymore. The reason people use ethernet is that it is a freely useable technology, and cheap, unlike the superior token passing technologies.
Bob is simply an old fuck. I don't know how else to put it.
What's wrong with selling cd's of mp3's? The sound quality will get better.
A bigger problem for me is that I'm really not all that much into pop music (I like techno but it about stops there). I mainly like jazz (think Lester Young, not KennyG) and classical... jazz I guess is workable but classical pieces are far too huge for downloading. Not to mention the audio fidelity is MUCH more noticeable on classical than with pop.
So maybe these fat cat record companies will have to scale down and sell only classical. Now that's rich.
In reality, Gates is extremely annoying, unctious, whiney and has a grating, irritating voice. He acts like a spoiled brat. The guy is a total ninny. They will definitely gloss this over completely; I'm sure he will be portrayed as a tough talking no-nonsense type of person.
Yet, it might be interesting to see him transform from a young whiney rich ninny-spoiled brat into a old, market-drone-speak ultra-rich billionaire ninny-spoiled brat.
He will not be portrayed this way. Once the motherfucker is safely (for us, I hope, with shub-niggurath slowly eating his soul for all eternity) in his grave, maybe someone will portray him realistically, adding in the linux story as well - hopefully the linux saga will have a happy ending:-)
americans are fat pigs!

We have a tendency to let ourselves go (not me - I run all this time). Especially women. It's disgusting, but most americans don't exercise at all. To make matters worse, that was California. It's really gross in places like Louisiana where EVERYONE is simply freaking huge.
would'nt putting squid in front of apache drastically reduce the number of processes apache has to spawn for this type of test? Can't you do this on the same machine and see some performance gains?
We know that Micros~1 was not just targeting linux, but the linux/apache combination. They don't care about zeus since Zeus isn't causing their market share to drop through the floor.
As far as this four ethernet trick thing goes, I simply don't understand this. The linux equivalent would be to use gigbit ethernet, not four 100Mb cards.
What we should have is a price based benchmark. Give each side $15000 and see what numbers they can get. Include the costs of all the NT server + licenses as well. Testing on 200 clients mean they will have to buy a Emachine with 16MB for a server. Bye-bye, NT!
Part of Slashdot's (and the Linux community's in general) problem with articles like these is that they conflict with the ego created by Linus' "world domination" speeches.
No, the problem is that the article was worthless. Yes, zero value. Nothing to say. NEXT!
Because its easier to use, maintain, and runs on almost anything their Intel-based systems can offer. Linux, on the other hand, he said, costs them more to maintain because they have to pay for compilations, extensive management, and the repeated solving of problems given by the apps. And, he says, they get much better support from Microsoft.
Oh great, now we have Micros~1 hunter seeker drones and troll bots on slashdot. You are an absolute nitwit.
GnoRPM barely works. It's OK for looking at what's installed on your system, but that's about it. The buttons don't work, some commands don't do anything, it crashes, ad infinitum. I'll be nice when it's done but isn't close to being done.
Glint was about the most annoying linux software I've ever used. None of the functionality of the CLI.
Anyone who uses RH has been using the CLI rpm command if you actually need to do anything.
At least unix has a strong tradition of neatly separating user writeable data from system data. This is so simple, yet completely overlooked in windows.
There is no concept of this in windows and this problem will only get worse.
It is very important for people to realize that for Micros~1 to solve this they would break ALL windows applications (including their own) - hence they will never fix it. Hence windows will always have this problem. It cannot be fixed.
Unix's security problems tend to revolve around it's "openess", whereas windows security problems tend to underscore its inherently stupid and single user design. At least unix is fixable. Windows is not.
I'd just like to point out that even with NT's vaunted "security", users are still "super users" most of the time, with (by default) FULL write access to %systemroot% and %systemroot%\system32.
Moreover, admins cannot make the system data read-only, since so many brain dead windoze apps want to write user data in the system area.
SOMEPLACE -- Some company invented something today that increases the capacity of something or another by ten trillion times. "This thing we came up with is so incredible" said the company's CEO. Consumers are never expected to use or see this coveted thing, but we thought we'd tell you about it in detail anyway.
I remember when OS X first came out Apple was touting some benchmarks against linux - and it was all using static html. I was wondering why at the time, since this is pontless. Now we know.

I never said he should be killed, I said ".. when this #$%#$ dies"
... judging from their website.
:-)

I would like one ... if I can get one cheap. Having used exclusively PC's I know absolutely nothing about terminals and would like to learn ...

I got there from kernel.org's list of mirrors ... I never actually checked, but kernel.org does say "Vatican City" - ftp.va.kernel.org
Upon inspection I found that the site is actually hosted in the UK. ???

Not sure if the site is physically located in VC, but it makes sense that it would be.
Did you all know that? the first time I saw that, it freaked me out.
It's funny to tell newbies they can download the latest linux kernel from the vatican's ftp site.
Will they come with the "live, streaming slack" logo plastered on the front?
Yes, they are a bit steep.
However, they do have nice things built in like a pc card reader.
They so much easier to manage than PC's, especially winblows PCs
They support a lot of protocols as well.
They probably use 1/100th the power of a normal ATX PC. The savings in costs here alone is justification for some people.

Micros~1 Windows is FUCKED.
So the virus will screw them too.
... someone makes a linux based digital camera than has 10baseT/DHCP that you can just ftp your pictures from?

... it happened thousands of years ago. Can't you find some real news? :-)
I remember when OS X first came out Apple was touting some benchmarks against linux - and it was all using static html. I was wondering why at the time, since this is pontless. Now we know.
So much for Apple.
I've seen it somewhere, a picture of a little penguin looking up at a gnu. Very cool.
Still, slackware has the coolest name and the best logo ("live, streaming slack!" -- who thought of that?!)
