  2. Melt in your mouth, not in your hands.. on Sony Announces Superslim T415 · · Score: 1, Interesting

I wonder how much these designers get paid to sit in a padded room using their wealth of experience to create the funkiest designs.

Are they just extinct PR bunnies turn creators?

This latest offering certainly looks nice, but I still have to see _anyone_ walking around with any form of Sony PDA (clie). Come to think of it, Handsprings aren't exactly common (even though they're cheap). I know for one tha the iPaq is the PDA-to-have around here - even though most people just seem to use them as expensive mp3 players and meeting-announcers..

  3. Bloatware on Red Hat 7.2 Released · · Score: 0, Flamebait

From my previous experience with the RedHat range, I can only come to the assumption that this latest incarnation will be surely even more bloated than the last.

Actually, I think I stopped using RH around v6.1 - blah blah please no "but you don't have to install all the rpm's" flames.

It won't be long before you will have RedHat in one hand and Windows in the other hand and they'll both weigh about the same. Long live bloatware :)

So what is the average case made of?

I've got a nice ACME case, very sturdy, currently sitting with two huge 120mm fans in the side sucking in with an 80mm blowhole on the top.. several other bits in there...

But it manages to keep my 1.0 AXIA running sweetly at 1.51 Ghz @ 38c on idle..

  5. Monkeys on Security Issues with Windows 2000 Datacenter? · · Score: 1

    Come on.

At a functional level, the thought of having customized patches made 'just for you' probably sounds quite appealing to most large scale MS users - to think that Microsoft are dedicating their time in some manner to cater for this company's needs to fine detail is pretty good.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience as an end-user of these apparent focus support promises, but i've never actually heard of this coming up before..

Of course, any large scale cluster on _any_ platform will create havoc if it is exploited - this news posting is just a troll to bring up the old iis-sucks-cos-of-vbs-etc hole yadda and view it in a different light and try and scaremonger people.

It all boils down to how good your admin is. Whatever platform you choose, you need to make sure your SysAdmin is as good as they need to be to make your shit secure - that's the bottom line.

  15. Re:Microsoft is not stupid. on Why The U.S. Surrendered To Microsoft · · Score: 1

    Totally.

I think the major thing that the Open Source community is failing to understand is that the percentage of ubergeeks compared to 'normal' users is extremely small. Yes, your normal 'pc user' does _not_ want to learn perl, or compile source code or even install packages - hell, the console would probably scare them.

Linux etc. does need to become more user friendly before the typical computer user will take to it - but surely this is the path that Microsoft took originally and now their o/s's are called BloatWare? It's a vicious circle.

So, the two options are: a) continue to provide a tricky platform for normal users to use, or b) turn Linux into bloatware to make it easy for users.

Either way Microsoft win. Go figure.
