Technically the Rules Wizard isn't a spam filter, but it does help me kill spam. I use it as a white list. I'll only see messages from peeps who I want to hear from.
Also, I have a few forwarders. If I register with Best Buy, for example, then I create a bestbuy@mydomain.com address for them and register with that. So if I get SPAM there, I just turn that forwarder off.
When somebody emails me and they're not on my list, they get a message back saying "Didn't get your message with human readable instructions on how to contact me.
"How dare countries outside America try to compete! It's so... un-American!"
The problem isn't the competition, it's the short-sighted decisions to use these companies. It may be cheaper to produce this stuff, but the people who make the tech stuff tend to be the people that buy the tech stuff. Can't do that if you don't have a job.
I have a piece of advice for you: When you're making comments like "How dare countries compete with America", 9 times out of 10 you are missing a huge chunk of information about what makes the problem a problem. Life is rarely that simple.
"People want lower prices, better pay and competition. Now these same people complain when they lose their job."
What's so interesting about that? It's not ironic, if that's what you're implying. It's kind of hard for businesses to sell products if the people who buy them are unemployed.
"Not that I'll be parting with my PS2 anytime soon, but I'm definitely buying a few GameCubes for christmas presents this year."
That's the nice thing about consoles. There's no reason to give up one for the other. Let me rephrase that, there are practical reasons, i.e. trading in one console towards another. But there's no reason to not have both.
As for Christmas presents, I think for XMAS I'm going to by my gf her own gamecube. We've been playing Mario Kart on the N-64 lately. I think it'd be fun to get a second game cube along with broadband adapters and play against each other, each on our own TV.
"Because registration is a pain, regardless of what people say."
You registerred to Slashdot and posted this commment. How much harder is NYT registration?
Honestly guys, ya do it once and then it's done. If you're willing to register to Slashdot, then why's it such a BFD to register with NYT? It's not like NYT stories here are rare.
"In the long run, it isn't going to do anything major to Microsoft."
They're probably concerned about pirated games being played on it. Not saying they should be worried about it, but if you can get Linux running, then what's stopping somebody from running restricted games on it?
Truth be told, I think most game companies are way too concerned about piracy.
"Get one of those cheap Lindows boxes at Walmart."
Gotta say, I agree. The only real thing this machine excels at is showing video on a TV. If you want to do a media center playing DivX and other formats, then it sounds good. Anything else, though, and I just can't think of a reason to go with the XBOX.
I'm from the art world as opposed to the programming world, so please excuse the terminology.
You should storyboard your app and let people have a peek at it. One thing that bugs me about the OSS apps I've downloaded is that they never seem to have me in mind when they develop their tools. VirtualDub comes to mind. Very cool and useful app, but man, it's a list of commands under a file menu. Virtually no interface at all.
"Per the allegation that the school has been ignoring evidence that electromagnetic radiation from Wi-Fi networks poses health risks, I'd invite the luddite parents and their attorneys to have a radiofrequency engineer show them what the airwaves in the classroom (or better, at home) look like."
It'd be amusing (though unlikely) if the school filed child abuse charges with the parents who brought up the case, citing that they owned cell phones.
Still waiting for Mario Kart to come out. It's supposed to support net play. I'd love to play Mario Kart with one player per TV. I also enjoy the idea of playing other games that way. Would have made Goldeneye more exciting!
I hope the next Nintendo console has dual monitor support. That'd be slick.
"Unless the value add is worth as much as the game it won't do much to detur piracy."
Faulty logic. Sometimes $50 is too much to buy a game, where $40 is reasonable. Give a little value add to it and that $50 price tag isn't so bad anymore.
"But did you just say that a company should spend millions of dollars to produce a piece of entertainment software AND THEN the only reason someone should feel like paying money for it is if it includes a small pewter statue or game art? WTF is that?"
A misunderstanding.:P
I didn't use the words 'only' or 'should'. I said I'd consider adding something to it to encourage sales. You can copy the game, but you can't copy the physical stuff that comes with it.
"Enethical business is your problem, not outsourcing."
The problem is you can't really do much about general unethical practices. What you can do is identify the worst cases of them and fight it.
"The population of India is so large that they could absorb ALL the IT jobs in the U.S. and still have people left over..."
I suppose that's possible. Though not everybody in India is going to want to be a programmer, I do see your point.

No spam. No false positives.

... time zones, demand, and communications barriers will make India less attractive to outsource to.
"Please allow me to introduce you to the Backspace key."
Chickenhawk is back!

"I know. If only Linux weren't so damn expensive."
It cost us roughly $60,000 a year. Once we switched to Linux, we needed a system administrator.
"Quick, install Windows XP on her machine. That'll teach her to fuck with you."
I got a better idea, install Linux on her machine. She'll get the hint when she's forced to type 'man mount'.
"Actually...what is it the Lindows box can do that an XBox can't do? "
Anything but play games.

Nulo.
Why does everybody here prefer to argue than listen? I didn't say I only buy $40 games. Didn't even hint at it.
Interesting. Even tasteful.
Thanks for pointing that out to me!

... I have the urge to call my dad and thank him for being sensible.

"That DCMA violation is facilitated by Microsoft and the CD-ROM drive manufacturers."
Microsoft provided this 'DMCA Violation' long before the DMCA existed. Autorun was never intended to be used as a protection device.
For this reason, I don't think MS will ever be seriously seen as violating the DMCA.
' It sure was nice of microsoft to provide me with this nifty circumvention."
Too bad the circumvention came before the protection scheme.
