  1. Anybody ever use linux on a zSeries (mainframe) on IBM's Newest Mainframe Is All Linux · · Score: 1

Anybody used linux on a mainframe? I skimmed the comments but didn't see anyone mention they used one. I have it works but it has its issues...big issues. Anybody ever seen prices for memory on a mainframe. Big bucks. I'm sure its come down since then but in the last 2 years I heard them talking here at work about $10,000 for 1 Gb and it comes in 8 Gb "books". Then try to get your mind around z/VM RAM disks for swap (my z/Series guy says this is how you have to do it). Mainframe dasd (thats disk to the rest of us) is insanely expensive. Plus at least for us when you convert it in z/VM and present it to linux a mod27 (27 Gb mainframe volume) turns into a little over 23 Gb under LVM. Add that do all of the prepackaged executables you use have to be packaged for z/series hardware. Meaning ix/86 executables don't run on linux on Z the same way they won't run on linux on Power (p or i series)

I had this exact thing start happening earlier this week. I googled it and used the instructions to disable the Lenovo Message Center Plus. This is my work Laptop. I openned a ticket and tried to explain to them what it was but no they had to treat my like a newbie and scan my harddrive for malware (like I hadn't already thought of that), I know its SOP but I already told them what it was. The biggest reason for openning a Ticket was so they would know about it when somebody else here (all laptops are lenovo) gets the same thing.

Its convenient enough for me that it made Slashdot's front page so I can send this link to them.

This game was classic. I remember sitting around the computer lab in college playing this on machines when we had nothing better to do. The banana's would "explode" when they hit a building. We'd go thru the basic code and increase the size of the banana explostion. Quite fun.

  5. This is a Scam on Experiences with Alternate Local Phone Companies? · · Score: 1

I did a little looking in to this. A simple search on google found a number of hits discussing that this is a scam and the operator is wanted on Felony fraud, stealing, etc... charges in IOWA and Missouri.

  6. Re:Remindes me of the JATO Impala story on Jet Turbine Locomotives · · Score: 1
Fast trains aren't fast if they are on slow tracks, and until Amtrak can get their own tracks the freight trains will keep messing up the rail beds for all these fast trains.

The tracks and rail beds those freight trains keep messing up are build and maintained by the rail freight company. I work for one of the few remaining class 1 railroads and according to company propaganda, Amtrac uses our track at a lower rate than standard, it's trains get priority over our own, and to top it off since Amtrack can't make any $ off of passenger traffic they are now hauling light freight at a lower rate than us over our own tracks.

By the way, I know our company experimented with gas turbine powered locomotives in the 50's. They were discontinued at that time because they were too loud and we were unable to use them around any metropolitan areas. They were segregated to the long freight runs in the western US, until the end of their service life.

  7. PayPal and stolen credit cards on Online e-Commerce Issues w/ PayPal? · · Score: 1
The first time I heard of PayPal was a little over a year ago when going thru my bills and found a change for $200+ from "xcom paypal" or something like that. I phoned the 1800 number off the bill and found that they were not open on Saturday. When I finally got a hold of a human being and told them that they had an account with my name and credit card they would only suspend the account instead of closing it as I had asked and informed me I would have to dispute the charges with my credit card company. They also refused to provide additional information that was used on the account which held my name and credit card.

In the meantime I had contacted the credit card company, cancelled that card, and investigated the 2 other changes made by the thief. One of the charges had been refunded before I even contacted the vendor (they'd found a string of stolen credit card transactions). The second change (apparently for something called gay-per-view)was refunded to the card as soon as I informed the customer rep for that organization that the card number had been stolen, they even provided me with the address and email that had been given to them by the theif.

I've never used Paypal and have no intentions of using it in the future.
