I'm patenting "Viewers losing interest due to Phillips destroying the entertainment value of a product". I'll call it the "Golden Egg Laying Goose" patent.
Remember what happend to Atari in the 80's. Games have become repetative and there is little originality left. Once you've seen the same thing for the umpteenth time I'm not surprised that teens would lose interest.
Absolutely. This isn't just a "bling" desire, it is people's natural need to be able to compare things and numbers make it easy. It is why people are driven to put dollar values on everything whether it makes sense or not. See which your boss likes more, a "3 is bigger than 2" or "well, it depends" answer. It is a lot harder to compare picture quality without analyzing side-by-side images and asking questions about the conditions they were taken under, etc. AMD faced the same issue with their CPUs when everything was measured by clock speed even if the cycles were being used very inefficiently.
Whatever happened to the big promise of the net? I thought this kind of brick and mortar dependency was supposed to go away; so much for that. I don't see what is stopping game companies from just going more towards online distribution (like so many small publishers do already)? The article mentions this point at the end.
The other alternative mentioned is to build a full version for those of us who aren't offended by adult images and lock it down for mainstream distribution. Offer an unlock code online that is keyed to each specific release. Does this really create too much extra cost for the developers?
Funny how Wal-Mart considers blood and gore to be "family friendly" but not R rated T&A.
"The second is that over-consumption of Diet Coke does have an obvious health effect. It dehydrates you. Caffeine is a diuretic, so if you drink Diet Coke instead of water all day, every day, you end up chronically dehydrated. Dehydration makes a person feel bad."
The diuretic affects of caffeine (at least in the amounts present in drinks) is exaggerated. It doesn't dehydrate you to any important degree. The most noticeable effect is the elimination of the caffeine boost-bust cycle and the headaches that can come with it. Having your alertness constantly adjusted up then coming down makes you feel crappy in general.
Actually after 8 hours of sitting and coding at work my main problem is a sore ass. If drinking a steady supply of diet coke is a health problem then add that to the list too.
If it wasn't for regular workout classes after work and hiking on weekends I'd probably be gasping like a fish just from walking to my car.
Without a steady supply of people without college degrees where would the future 50 Cent and Jessica Simpson fans come from? Not to mention the need for future music industry employees.
"why is the gene that determines eye color in humans the exact same in frogs... yet does absolutely nothing in them. I mean... the RNA in a virus has 90% of what it takes genetically to make a human."
Genes are just instructions, whether they get turned on or not (expressed) is a different matter. Our genes are full of what appears to be junk, it could be unexpressed genes, or viral debris, historical baggage, who knows so far. Birds retain the genes for teeth, they are just not expressed. Some scientists actually turned them on and created toothed chickens. A shadow from their dinosaur past?
The common genes you talk about are most likely for basic things like making the fats for cell membranes and metabolism. The last 10% is for the body shape, though even body shape such as two arms, 5 digits, two legs, head, etc are common throughout the vertebrates. I wouldn't be surprised if that gene for eye color turns out to be used in creating light sensitive pigments in their eyes, or maybe it is just turned off.
"I mean... when is the last time you saw a programmer take typing tutorial program and turn it into a photoshop killer?"
No, but I've worked with LOTS of code that has old junk in the libraries and historical baggage that has built up over time. Some of it gets turned off but isn't removed from the code base, sound familiar? If you didn't have the option of cleaning things up but were told that you had to turn that typing tutorial program into a crude word processor fast or die I'm sure you'd find yourself reusing code in interesting ways.
You agree on evolution on time scales we can observe but not on longer ones? I guess you'll never see a 5 million year long lab experiement (at least not NSF funded).
Sorry Anonymous Coward, I guess I misread this line when IRTFA, "...has marshaled an army of scientists and business leaders to make robots full members of society".
It's funny how we are ready to protect robots but we still treat our closest genetic kin, other primates, as nothing more than cheap food ("bush meat") or lab rats.
With the $500,000,000+ jury Powerball winnings they got I don't see how future earnings would be a concern. Why play the lottery when you can play the courts?
It is a shame that Ebola (or whatever they call themselves) isn't going to get licensing $ on top of their bloated jury award lottery winnings. *drying tears*
It is amazing that I find myself feeling sympathetic for bloated megacorp Microsoft.
I wonder if I'll ever see tort, patent, or copyright reform in my lifetime?
I found the article reflecting many of my feelings about porn. One is that, like any other activity, you become tolerant and bored with what you have and to get the thrill back you have to escalate to something more intense. It is ridiculous what they resort to to try to get you interested. People are hardwired to adjust to virtually anything.
Another is that porn screws up men's ability to be sexually turned on by normal woman. I joked with a friend in college once (who immediately agreed) that I hated magazines like Playboy because they made it impossible to be truly turned on by the majority of real woman around us. It creates a constant dissatisfaction with reality.
I find most porn boring now. They all have the same tired looking blonds and they all portray sex the same way. The men are frequently being hostile to the woman (I thought straight guys liked woman?) which is a real turn off to me. I'd rather see a cute real world girl anyday.
Only on slashdot can you go in a few comments from porn addiction to the martial arts!
I find myself feeling "off" and out-of-sorts if I miss too many practices myself (wu shu/kung fu). It has definately helped me build up my will power and focus (from very bad to ok). It isn't a cure-all though, you can easily get into negative feelings of egotism and failure if you approach it the wrong way. I'm convinced though that just going through a mentally and physically demanding session can make a big improvement in how you feel emotionally. It is like taking some powerful antidepressant. I always feel very relaxed and peaceful after my wu shu workouts.
It is amazing how much more strongly you perform in a group than by yourself. People really do feed off of group energy. Nothing beats a mob!
By the way, that shaking leg you get in T-position is nicknamed "Elvis Leg".
"reproductive organs in its mouth"?
I hate to break it to you but many, MANY people have done this already.

"What happens in China stays in China, or else"
By their definition every time you pass a digit it is "software" and therefore taxable since they consider data an executable.

Just copy and paste this into your comment!
>>>Linux good, Microsoft bad!
I prefer to enter the personal information of phishers into each other's scam mail, that way they just circulate their stolen funds back and forth.

"Hello?"
"Yuck yuck! This is Goofy! yuck! yuck! Your daughter has just been in an accident. Yuck yuck! Have a good day! Har har!"

They used to be called business practices, now they are patents. Wait until someone tries to patent the idea of selling high, buying low.
If they keep this shit up I wouldn't be surprised to see other countries either dropping out of patent treaties or forcing their modification.
I guess their boothbabes were just too hot.
Someone has been dropping spam bombs on my mailbox for years now.

You really have anger issues.
I'd give them my comments but they are copyrighted.

That isn't a pr0n induced assumption, it is a common sense conclusion.
