You missed the point. If I HAVE to be there then my opinion DOES matter. I'm not talking about someone's business, airports are public places. Just because it isn't my property doesn't give you a license to do whatever you want. I guess you'd no problem with someone shooting a gun off into the air all day nextdoor to you. After all, it isn't your gun.
I'd love to meet the person who felt that shoving TVs blaring CNN in every waiting area was a good idea.
Maybe I'm crazy but I don't think that after driving through Mad Max like traffic to get there, standing in line for the boarding pass for an hour, standing in line for security for an hour, and then having to listen to a newscast describing a plane crash is that relaxing (yes, this actually happened to me in Logan airport). I felt like I was in that scene in "Airplane" where the inflight movie was a plane being test crashed.
Flying is stressful enough without having a litany of the day's murders, war casualties, layoffs, etc being crammed into my ears.
Well, I know what I want for Christmas now (and what I'll be giving a few people).
"What about the TVs in Cafe's or airports or other random places?"
Funny, I don't remember anyone asking me in the airport, where I'm forced to wait, if I wanted to listen to the TV blasting. There are so many ways to get the news that having it force fed to me isn't necessary. The last thing I need to hear about after standing in line for security for an hour and having risked my life in the drive to get there is, for example, how some kids got horribly killed somewhere.
They should do what I saw in a gym once, broadcast the sound portion over a radio frequency so people with radios could listen to it and those who didn't want to hear it weren't forced to. I assume if you can afford a plane ticket you can afford a cheap pocket radio and headphones.
I wish the cops in most towns actually did something about it. The problem is that most police depts. don't have the pricey decibel meters they need to see if legally a violation has taken place. The other problem is what do you do about the a-holes who ride modified Harleys (or cars with "boomer" exhausts) and just pass through town occasionally. You may get it every day but it isn't the same people necessarily. The only way to fight that is with automated ticketing cameras or noise traps.
There really is no excuse for massive car stereos on the road anyway. They obviously are there to be inflicted on bystanders since they are far louder than anyone could possibly need in the car. I've had my stomach thudded in closed concrete buildings from passing cars with these stereos. If most of the owners can't use them responsibly then they need to be taken off the road.
Agreed. I'd like to add that virtually any organization depends on a large amount of trust. At some point you have to trust someone with passwords, cash, etc. Social Engineering works because people get used to being able to trust others and aren't expecting someone to purposefully break it.
Maybe "stings", to remind people to be careful by showing them how off guard they are, are needed in the workplace. Have some people call around and try to weasel information out of their coworkers. People need to confirm ID's and the need-to-know.
I don't think that would work since they could just tell them to type in the wrong URL. People who aren't savvy will just look at something like "Enter 123.43.21.48/login.php" and accept it as official. After all, we live in the "Obey instructions blindly and criticism is unpatriotic." era.
It would be better to put some sort of cost into the process. Maybe have the customer call an 800 number to confirm their ID and get a login code or do it all over the phone. No scammer is going to invest in an 800 number, they want to make money, no spend it.
The security clearance item also points to the fact that many government jobs or government contractor jobs require US citizenship. Those jobs will never be shipped overseas.
You won't get rich working for the government but you won't get tossed in the trash as easily as in private business.
- Putting industry in Siberia puts your factories closer to warm water ports. Most ports elsewhere in Russia freeze over in the winter.
- Most of Russia's mineral and oil wealth is concentrated in Siberia (result of the Siberian traps volcanism?). Smelters and other such dirty industries will go where the minerals are.
Actually this is coming from coal fired power plants in these regions. The issue of acid rain generated by these plants polluting the NE has been a source of political fights for some time now. NJ filed a lawsuit against Ohio because of this.
My first car was a Ford [car model removed due to owner's embarrassment]. I came to a light and as I hit the brakes to slow down the engine started revving like mad. I had to put all my weight onto the brake pedal to keep it still at the light, it was like trying to hold back a crazed horse. I didn't want to go through the light obviously and I didn't want to kill the engine there either. I managed to control it until I got to a parking lot on the other side of the intersection where I put it into neutral and killed the ignition. The engine dieseled for almost 5 minutes until it used up what was in the carburetor (yes, old car). Fortunately there was a mechanic across the street who walked over and checked the throttle line and noticed that it was frozen open. He loosened it up and I was able to get it to the shop the next day safely.
Overkill, it is the American way. Why do people in this country feel the need to drive a Hummer to carry a few frigg'n bags of groceries?
We haven't faced a country in decades that could put up a fight never mind pose a real threat. We've got goddamn stealth planes facing air defenses that consist of some scared kid firing a gun wildly in the air.
The military needs to make the rubble bounce a few more times I guess.
Too bad they don't have a version of it that does shortwave (aka Worldband) radio also. Then you could record shows from, say, Australia at 3AM your time or if you were a HAM you could set it to record a period when someone you are waiting for to transmit.

I love the Google translation! It reads like it was written by Sgt Schultz from "Hogan's Heroes".
I'm picking "Yusuf Islam", then I'm catching a flight.
Damn, that is pretty ballsy of them. Sounds like organized crime.

Why stand when you can sit?
I did read the article. Take that chip off of your shoulder. They are developing them. I didn't say they were operational.

Actually China is doing this right now. New Nukes for China

Ahhhh...I plead the 5th amendment

NOT FUN!
Great, if I drink this beer I'll have to make twice as many trips to the men's room.

Actually I used to practice my german by listening to radio Deutsche Welle.

"and then listen to the cavalcade of freaks and weirdos on my iPod while driving, walking, exercising and so on."
What, reading Slashdot isn't enough for you?
Shouldn't a person considered "Most Influential" at least be recognizable by a majority of people in that field?
I guess a moderator thought the victims were MS Windows fans.
It also includes a pad of paper and a pencil in case the batteries die.
