"Haha. The average person doesn't know that drinking four liters (even less if you drink demineralized water) or more can and will kill you."
Since this contest was run by ordinary people (people who work at radio stations are extraordinary?) then by your definition they couldn't be expected to know any better than the people who competed.
Don't you know that only the person or organization with the most money is ever responsible? That is why you sue the bar for selling the drink and not the person who lets themselves get drunk and then drives home.
For all the complaining people do about bad sequels I guarantee you that you would still waste your $10 on Star Wars VII even if they had Tom Green as Han Solo.
"it may simply not exist, because the company can't afford to pay the domestic salaries necessary."
Reread my comment. I say "which they could still afford" which means they could afford domestic salaries. That is my starting point. Many of these companies can afford it, they just choose not to for the sake of maximizing profits.
"Similarly, me pirating a copy of, say, a $1000 program is not a lost sale, because without piracy, I wouldn't have been able to afford the software anyway."
My example was for someone who could clearly afford the product but chose not to pay for it. In my example the person obviously could afford to pay for the CD because they bought it then returned it (I see this with used DVDs all the time) so they could get a free copy. I agree with your logic but that wasn't what I was talking about. If you bought the $1000 program then returned it after making a copy then that would be different, yes?
The logic isn't completely off. If the job could've been made here (though at more cost which they could still afford) then it is a lost job. The RIAA/MPAA assume you would've made the purchase without any proof. These jobs however were planned and definate so they were going to be generated. If you purchased the CD then returned it and downloaded a copy instead then that would be a better comparison.
I agree though that just saying it is a lost job without checking the requirements isn't correct. You can't create a job for handling local on-site customer support in Madras India by creating the job in Omaha Nebraska.
Big databases appear as soon as you want to analyze performance or sales trends, especially in the financial and retail markets. Now you start accumulating large amounts of historical data that need to be processed on a daily basis.
We at the International Spammers Assoc (also known as "Total Bastards") hope that whatever server system you choose for your home that you purchase the most bandwidth you can for your connection to the internet. We also encourage you to keep your system unpatched, use dictionary word passwords (we suggest "aardvark" or "password"), and keep the port for IRC open. Leaving your system on 24 hrs a day will also greatly help ISA members in other time zones who like to sleep in.
Thank you!

It has nothing to do with stupidity. Corn ethanol is pushed mainly by corn subsidies to support midwestern states (for votes) and from lobbying by companies like ADM (Archer Daniels Midland). Unless people are willing to change their lifestyle (probably won't do willingly) then technological solutions have to be hunted for and many of them will turn out to be dead ends. It is no different than any other line of research.
Cellulose to ethanol would be a better route if they got the process working.
Well, moonshiners didn't have to get all of the water out of it, you were just drinking it after all. Some of that stuff I'm sure was pretty dry but the ethanol shippers can't use fuel pipelines because even low water levels would cause expensive corrosion. It has to be moved in tankers. Ethanol likes water, one of the reasons distilling to near 100% purity is very difficult and only laboratory grade ethanol comes close.
They also use lots of natural gas. In fact ethanol production uses more energy to produce than you get back from ethanol combustion. Plus you increase CO2 emissions in the end. Expect to see natural gas prices either go up or imports (and dependancy) to increase.
Not to mention that the massive increases now and coming soon in ethanol plants using corn will drive up corn prices which will affect things downstream such as meat and eggs (grain feed) and products made from them. Increasing corn production would come at the expense of other crops which would just pass price increases onto a different agricultural sector. I doubt new agricultural land is being added in any large amounts in this country to offset this. Instead, I think it is safe to say, from what I've personally seen, that large amounts of agricultural land are being lost to development. Productivity per acre is already being pushed to the limit with heavy fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide use with the problems they cause for human health, fishing, and the environment.
The best route to research isn't the fermentation of corn (bad) or the sugar in sugar cane (better) but cellulose (corn stalks, grasses, sugar cane waste, etc). The problem though is seperating the lignin from it and the enzymes needed to break it down into sugars. The Jan 2007 Scientific American has a good article on this.
His theory is full of holes.
"I think the point being made here is that todays nutjob is often tomorrows nobel winner."
...and he may not be right!
I don't recall too many Nobel winners being called nutjobs in their early days. I think that is a myth propogated by bitter nutjobs.
"He may not be wrong."

Check out the cost of living in San Jose. It costs $20 just to fart there.

Frequently the politicians making these laws are lawyers themselves. Good luck getting any tort reform passed with them.
Should be easy to compress though. Think of all of that blank space betweeen objects.

Tongue Vision? Now I can watch a movie while performing oral sex! Does it come in high def or do I need seperate Tonsil Tuners?

I use it when watching my Simpsons DVDs. I like to see what the other camera angles caught during filming.
The extras where Homer works up the live studio audience before filming a show are great too.
I wouldn't want to get stranded either. Even if it refused to start a person needs to get home somehow. Better put in a taxi autodialer.
Wait until tomorrow. It'll feel like Florida. I'll have to go the the White Mtns to get my dose of winter.
Good luck querying that database!
