Next HDs I'll buy will all be Raptors (Western Digital). It may cost three times as much as anything else, but real fast access times and 10000 rpm justify it. And a serious MTBF (read : "will hopefully not die until I buy a replacement") has no price.
A stack of bad WD drives (not Raptors though) on my desk disagrees.
All drives fail - just make sure you have a good backup strategy.
Indeed, I've never understood why they ask you for something in the phone menus only to have the person who picks up ask you for it again.
My understanding was that it is not a 100% sure thing that the info they get from IVR system belongs to the person whose call they were transfered (most IVR systems are actually fairly descrete systems loosely tied to other systems, such as CSR's info screens, and errors may occur during handoff.) So in the case of sensitive information (Banking, Healthcare, etc_ they will ask you to repeat info to confirm what they see on the screen. This is for legal reasons as risks of giving wrong person information, not matter how unlikely this scenario is, are unacceptable.
Like I said, I *get* why it would be a fun toy. But the reality is that for majority of us checking email without WiFi is not an issue. I can check email any time and even have the email pushed to me if I want to (I don't) and all without being tied to a wi-fi spot. I can also get a fairly fast connection to internet on my laptop via my phone without a wifi (Much more usefull IMHO) I would much rather see better bluetooth support(why hide Dial-Up-Networking???), more reliable and complete software,(Why do I need 20 3rd party applications to do basic funcitonality my old Motorola phone had?) maybe firmware updates that go out to ALL Treos instead of only for some carriers (Damn it, I want my CDMA T650 to work in my car just like my sister's GSM T650 does, is that too much to ask???)
Finally, I just want someone to make an updated clamshell Palm device. I lovbe Treo functionality but not a big fan of the form factor.
As for wi-fi, like I said, just give people a driver for Wi-Fi SD card - very little work and everyone happy. Maybe when Linux based PalmOS comes out it will make things abit easier.
I belive a $30 USB Wi-Fi dongle is a LOT cheaper and simpler than a $500 phone. Hell, a $50 wi-fi router or access point is a simpler solution. And while I admire your creativity with limited resources, it is about as far from KISS principle as it comes.
use a Palm LifeDrive and enjoy its built in wifi. The Treo could benefit from this, but overall they need to remember to make a product that works. Sure the Treo could pack every possible gadget possible into its case, but users are not really looking for that. WiFi is very very popular and I believe it should be integrated, but TFA has the wrong attitude.
I am not sure why people have such an obsession with Wi-Fi on treo. While I do think it can be fun to play with, I do not think it overall adds much value - just kills the battery faster(as if we need THAT on treo). I mean really, unlike LifeDrive, it is not a storage device, it has its own data channel from carrier, and in worst case scenario, you CAN talk to a desktop via Bluetooth (which with a class 1 BT dongle can be a VERY long distance, well over 100 feet in my office)
I think time and money would be much better spent on improving the hardware design and OS and just releasing a driver for SD Wi-Fi for those who want to play with it.
Right on. I never understood need to replace a simple elegant solution (~50 mhz tivo, working great) with a bloated unusable crashing monstrocity costing 10x as much (2.5Ghz+ MCE that works not so great) The main thing Tivo was missing was ability to play video off the network, but even that is possible now(yay tivoserver). If you want something more flexible and less usable, XBMC on xbox is still a lot lighter than a full blown HTPC.
What *really* scares me is that people genuinely, legitimately believe this, and believe that police and government are out to get them, and that they're all corrupt and only looking for ways to extend their power or line their pockets.
I actually believe this is some deranged form of hope. I think the realization that world is just really messed up is too much for many, and they cling to hope of simple explanation -i.e. "they are out to get me!" and other conspiracy theories - because this means there is a simple "bad guy" that is responsible and if only we can get rid of him all would be well. I mean its just an alternative religion. Same basic need to fill the void. In the past they rose up against devil and witches, now its the evil corporations and governments. Not to say that there are no conspiracies, but they are so much more complicated to pull off than people think - and as a rule, a simpler explanation is usually the correct one. Or to put it another way, don't attribute to maliciousness that which can be explained by stupidity.
Very original, a year after BSG already did it. I would hope JMS would at least have the decency not to try and pretend he and Zabel just came up with the idea out of the blue.
Erm, I am pretty sure this was before BSG show came out and no, they never claimed they "came up with the idea out of the blue" but rather adapted a common comic book aproach to a TV show (if you read the pitch, it actually explains this in detail)
BSG is great but without B5 there would be no new BSG. B5 provide there is life for Sci-Fi other than trek and it can be better.
Actually, I am not saying nothing, but JMS's and Bryce Zabel's idea for new Trek series sounds strangly familiar, down to examples.... (mind you this was done in 2004)
I know the spinoffs didn't work out, but Crusade was killed by the network (I can't remember if it was WB or TNT) according to JMS and others that worked on the series. I happen to think that Crusade had big potential based on the popularity of the Techno-Mages among fans.
It did not help that a - the episode order was messed with during filming (like one episode using technology found in a later episode), b - the show was cancelled BEFORE it hit the airwaves (nothing to do with ratings) and c - the actual story arc was never filmed (it wasn't actually supposed to be about the plague, that was just window dressing)
July wants to date Mike the nerdy kid. Mike wants to date July. Brad is a big bully. So according to you Mike is free to 1) give is lunchbox to Brad every day so he can date July without being beaten up 2) not date July Would you say he can do as he pleases?
Interestingly misleading example...a RIGHT conclusion in this case is that according to YOU Brad has all the right in the world to take Mike's lunch AND beat him up and no one, even teachers, has a right to stop him - after all, its between Mike and Brad. Further more Brad can force July to date him by threatening her and no one can do anything about that too. Who gets the power to say what is right and what is wrong and who gets to enforce it??? People long ago realized that they have more power when they band together. Workers formed unions, citizens formed governments, government formed coalitions like EU. Sure when you are in a group the desires of an individual gets averaged out. Sure when one represents many chance of corruption is much higher. Its not perfect, and its not always right, but it does not make it illegitimate. A wiser man than you or I said - "ALL absolute statements are WRONG by definition." When you grow up you'll understand this.
The big difference is Enron used deception, they violated the contract they had with there shareholders. There are no legitimacy concerns when a contract is broken.
hey, we are not talking about legitimacy of what ENRON did, but since any government power is illegitimate, government's interference in the matter (they sent them to government jail, for crying out loud!!) certainly must be illegitimate. Government certainly hurts both Enron and shareholders by their illegitimate meddling excercise of power and should've left Enron alone.
Unfortunately, the result of that is likelhy to be Microsoft using a remote kill-switch to erase every hard drive on a windows machine set to an European time zone,
As unlikely as my suggestion is, what you are saying is simply impossible. It would be an equivalent of Microsoft giving up the software business and closing shop. The second they do this, their stock is gone (who will back a company that just lost a HUGE percentage of the market) and no government or large corporation would ever allow itself to knowingly run software with a "kill-switch". Hardware vendors would be forced to switch to alternative desktop OS's (Linux, SUN, OS/X) if they want to keep selling hardware. All of this meaning windows would simply ceise being a significant player in desktop OS market. M$ would never allow this to occur. Which is exactly why this may be the most powerfull motivator against them, much more so than a fine microsoft can pay from petty cash. Microsoft is not stupid enough to think there are no alternatives to Windows.
Second, any government power is illegitimate. The EU harms both its citizens and Microsoft by standing in between.
Yes, Just as US harmed its citizens by standing between Enron and all the people they swindled.... Damned that government power, Lets all have a minute of silence for fallen freedom fighter Ken Lay!!!
Revoke M$'s IP rights/copyright in EU as a remedy. Seems right given the issue at the heart of this. That'll get their attention... Doubt thats actually possible, but damn, it could be fun to watch....
Skype should have patented its technology, but it's not like the Chinese respect IP anyway.
Erm, ok, if they patent it, don't they have to disclose details of it? Kinda defeats the purpose of having a secret closed protocol that Skype wanted. I think there might be a better way to protect IP, via "trade secret" or something like it, but I am no specialist in the area:-)
"Urban theme" doesn't tell me anything meaningful about a game's mechanics or strategy.
Exactly. GTA's cool was not about the "Urban theme" (does Italian Mafia even qualify as "Urban"?? Maybe literaly, but thats not what that they mean when they say that.) It was about introducing a new style of game play - a level of interactivity and freedom that was not widely available before. It is widely available now, so if you want to catch interest of people you need to introduce something new. Be that "new" in "urban theme" or "redneck theme" or for that matter "ping-pong theme" window dressing is mostly irrelevant.
That list is not so different from the list of countries that still permit the death penalty. I suppose that comes from a general disregard for human life common to countries in both lists.
Very powerful point... except it is not really true. I hate when people make up crap on the spot to justify whatever they want to say. WMD's anyone? Yes, there is an intersection between these lists, but only about half of the countries listed above have death penalty, and most countries that have death penalty are NOT on this list. (See here)

Without mentioning the merits of said treaty, lets see, of 43 you listed, at least 19 are not third world (probably more, I just did a quick glance count), so lets stop with the ethnic slurs. Besides, a MUCH higher percentage of those who signed are third world (something like 116 of 151, again quicky count) - so if you want a real "who's who of third world nations" read THAT list.
Funny McNealy dismissed this as a 22 year old rumor only a few days ago.

Geez, Palm, don't you think it'd be nice if you released the 700p/w to all markets before you start selling the next model?
Is it Palm or the actual cariers that block this? I would think it is the carriers that decide this.
