If push came to shove, you could use one of those EarthLink or AOL coasters you get in the mail, install it, d/l what you want and uninstall the other junk. Or you may just have to go back to the stone-age and physically leave your house (gasp!) to go to a store and physically purchase a copy. That whole idea of the 'packaged' browser and MS claiming that it's an 'intricate part of the OS' is why MS has the lion's share of the browser market. It's free, it's pre-installed and you don't even have to leave your house. What a scam.....I wish I'd thought of that!

You're right on two things: 1) He has laid out the requirements. That does NOT mean that the requirements are unreasonable. I can require a PhD in a hire request for a shipping clerk but that does not make it any less unreasonable. 2) Don't be a clock monkey. I happen to agree with this however this falls under good management skills. If an employee has to constantly work the hours he describes they will burn them out VERY quickly. Even with competent workers unreasonable deadlines will not only frustrate the employee but force them out of the company that much quicker. Not a good practice; especially if the employee is worth keeping. Fulfilling your job requirement does not mean the employer can take advantage of the employee's skill and technical expertise to meet a 1 project deadline or meet short term financial goals. You'd think corps would have learned this by now. I have 10 people under me and I also have some very high priority projects currently underway. I expect a lot from my people and they for the most part deliver. When I see that the team is getting stressed and they've had a very productful week I do little things to pick up morale; like let them leave (paid) an hour early on Friday. Believe me....this goes a long way. They generally show up on Monday with a fresh new attitude and want to work twice as hard to accomplish the next week's goals. Fulfilling job requirements is only PART of the statement....providing the tools, time, resources and incentives to accomplish those goals are management's responsibility. Yes, I do spot clock monkeys here and again, but the team usually applies enough peer pressure to either bring them in-line or make them realize they are no longer part of the team and no longer wanted. It's a small price to pay (wage wise) on my part to have a fully functioning team that recognizes they have a manager who will look out for their best interest while still accomplising the objectives set forth by my boss. Just my $.02

I would agree with you if it were the wage for a single person, however for a family that may not be enough. I believe at that point (if you can't find employment in the field) you need to expand out into other areas. Sometimes we need to do things because we HAVE to; not because we want to. If a family is involved you need to 'dowatyougottado'.

Please don't equate the article with subsidies and tariffs; they're two completely different issues. The two 'negatives' you mention were enacted to protect a social economy on a global basis from other world entities that can contribute based on differing social agendas (like child labor or minimum wage laws; or lack thereof). These people at the MPAA sell on a global basis but the majority of their revenue is US based. I would not think it wise to play in this arena as Americans tend to vote with their wallets. It may not be next year but it will come full circle.

Yes, but spammers and people of their ilk would not have generally realized how powerful advertising could become without you and marketing personnel. They did not just wake up one morning and say 'Hey, it hasn't worked on TV, magazines or billboards so I think I'll try it here.' In the end, people will sniff out PR as well; good or bad.

I agree with you on some points however in the US our basic freedoms are held pretty sacred. For example the right to free speech does NOT include hatred but it holds a certain tolerance for it because if one were to supress your expressions of free speech then someone else's would be in danger of infringement. I personally don't always like it but it makes me more aware of what's being said around me; especially politicians or hate groups. I know about them therefore I can make a personal choice. I've heard the phrase 'Your right to express yourself ends at your fist and begins at my nose'; but that is with the intent of physical violence. Generally speaking words don't kill; they offend. I would agree with you that the US does not have a good grasp on our basic freedoms (at least since 1776) but the basic concepts are there; and that's what needed to define a culture. Even if a revolution were to happen in America tomorrow, the basic premise of the Constitution would not be lost.....it defines our culture. If anything, it would bring us back to the origins of the authors; which may not be a bad thing. I think the bottom line is that the UK and Americans are fundamentally different cultures but that does not mean we can't coexist in a world economy. Especially when it comes to computer advertising.
